Thanks again for another great video! You're so lucky to have this amazing bus. I remember years ago when I travelled in Europe our bus had the same gearbox and as a kid I used to sit near the driver, fascinated by the way he operated it. By the way: the Neoplan Skyliner N122 has been in service during the 90's till the early 00' in Israel, but here it had a fully automatic 6 speed ZF gearbox. What a wonderful machine it is! I wish you all the best and please keep sharing with us your adventures with the bus. Best greetings from Israel 🇮🇱

This is just simply SO cool! I rode a skyliner here in the UK at a bus enthusiast event not too long ago, and to be honest, I 100% see why people love them. You did such a fantastic job in the build, and honestly, in general, it’s such a cool concept, just to pack, and roll to wherever you want, with not one, but two levels of comfort and space. Keep up the great work, and hello from the UK!

Love your double decker excellent craftsmanship I have watched all your videos. I would love you to do a video on talking about how you approved doing the wiring and plumbing, for example where you have hidden the pipes and cables, are they easy to access for repairs, are your electric wires buried behind the walls, would you link your grey tank to your black tank with a valve so once you empty black tank you can flush it through with black tank, how much water and battery usage do you do on average, would you have done anything differently in terms of plumbing and wiring (excluding the compostable toilet). Another video idea is height limits and bridges, how do you plan for these, would it be possible to put solar panels on top without exceeding height limit, or would only thin flexible solar panels be suitable, also a video talking about your thoughts on insulation in the van and any air conditioning or roof access ideas e.g. top floor above bed and front chairs for cross breeze of air. I definitely would love you to make a video on all of these questions as your bus has inspired me to build my own in the future.
@Onrust1
@Onrust1 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this comment. For me it is difficult to think what I could do next, so I value these kind of input highly - thanks again. Plumbing and wiring might be an interesting topic, although difficult to show... Planning around the height limit is quite easy; stay on the main roads. Last weekend we were in Germany and Google Maps wanted to direct me off the main road onto smaller ones - that would be a shorter route. Well, I just don't follow that suggestions. I made a plan and stick to it. I indeed could show this on a map once, in a video. You can do those smaller roads, but you would have to be on the lookout for the signs; mostly height and weight limits.. Yes, solar panels would fit between the hatches. There is no need for flexible panels, I hear about people having trouble with those, because they are not that sturdy as the conventional ones. Insulation is a controversial topic, because an object made out of steel (vehicle, but can be container too) is very difficult to insulate. I will think about your suggestions. Next on the list is a video about last weekend.
@azza4752
@azza4752 Жыл бұрын
@@Onrust1 I am glad you are considering my suggestions I look forward to videos on these topics Ron, I rewatched all of your videos multiple times to be sure you hadn't already answered them before asking. Yes plumbing and wiring would be interesting even if difficult to show as you can just show thought process and pictures, no need to disassemble or rip everything out. I am keen to understand since you have your bathroom upper floor, e.g. pumps, macerating toilet etc .., how you planned for preventing smells, and access in case of blockage for repairs etc did you route these along your bedroom and then down to the garage area etc … My concern about solar is the thickness of normal panels may exceed the height limit if one wanted to cover the roof of the 4m tall bus compared to the thin profile panels ( I agree they are worse) as I understand 4m is the height limit for vehicles due to it being a common bridge height I believe ? I am from UK where there is not a height restriction but I learned this from my research if I wanted to buy a European double decker to convert in the future. I had an idea for planning around the height restrictions with less planning, navigation companies like TomTom and Garmin etc… now recently have mobile / tablet based app subscription (low cost) for Heavy goods truck vehicles where you can input height and length and weight of vehicle so this may help with reducing planning and more exploring? With insulation topic you could also talk more about your Air conditioning units, pros and cons in terms of performances, energy usage, layout location etc.., and exploring newer efficient technologies like heat pump which can cool as well as heat for year round travel.
@Onrust1
@Onrust1 Жыл бұрын
You are very right about the 4 meters. With a vehicle over 4 meters you are very limited in possibilities (I wrote more about that in my FAQ, all at the bottom - have you already found that?). But the hatches stick out the roof a bit, so in between should be enough room for normal solar panels. I know about the Garmin/TomTom solutions for large vehicles, but up until now felt no need for them. Maybe in the future, I don't rule it out. But in the end best is to rely on yourself, because only one can be held responsible (you.. 😏). My AC's already can work as heating device. That was the main reason for me to put it up as one of the first devices, in the beginning of the build; so I could work in winter without getting cold.

You need a tachograph in Holland? In Australia it's used in commercial vehicles, but privately owned buses and coaches used as motorhomes don't need them or logbooks. 12.5 metre coaches converted into motorhomes are very popular in Australia. We looked at one like yours, but the headroom was too low. We have two-project one is a 12.5 metre Mercedes O303 with a tag axle, and number 2 is a 1998 MAN 24-420, also 12.5m with a tag axle. We've only just bought that a week ago so very early days of converting it from a 53 seat tour coach to a motorhome. Best wishes with your travels.

You're right, driving such a monstrous vehicle shouldn't be that difficult, with a little training. When I started driving as a temp minibus cab driver many years ago, I learned how to drive a Mercedes Sprinter. Also checked both side mirrors to check if I was in the correct part of the street. Drove around the parking lot a for practicing a few turns and driving in between obstacles. The simple adagium: if you can get half of the bus past an obstacle before turning, you can get the entire bus past it. And if you're not sure, begin making a wider turn in advance or even just hit the brake, check your mirrors and start backing up slowly. The greatest threat that I found while driving a passenger van was not any potential harm coming from other road users. It was sometimes small kids who thought it would be funny and exciting to hide behind the back of the bus, where I couldn't see them, and wait what would happen next. Fortunately, I caught sight of the kid before it hid behind the bus so I just stopped, got out and gave a sever reprimand to the ''accidentally suicidal kid.'

No, it's not top-heavy, and that is because the main part of the 16000 kgs is very low in the vehicle. That is more or less a requirement, because there could be some 60 people upstairs, so that adds some weight there..

How about the weight? The build in parts tanks, batteries and solid interior are quite heavy and then all the stuff stored.

I’m surprised you need the tacho graph. Is it still registered as a bus?

Do you need to fill in a tacho for a private vehicle?
@Onrust1
@Onrust1 2 жыл бұрын
In my country there is discussion about that. I tried to figure out, so I read the laws, and I found out that where other countries make exceptions for private trips (it's about the trip, not the vehicle) in my country that exception was never made. So I'm pretty convinced you do need it here. But lots of people think you don't, even officers of the law. Because I find it no big deal to put in one of those discs when I leave, AND I know it prevents me from having some debate in ANY country at all, I just put one in. For me, it's a no-brainer...

Op trailer of a frame.

@Onrust1
@Onrust1 2 жыл бұрын

When the bus has to get a maintenance check, where do you go? I feel like not every garage can take a giant doubledecker.
@Onrust1
@Onrust1 2 жыл бұрын
My garage is on a one hour drive and does only buses. The mechanic there can do all with any bus. He has a lift even for double deckers and he does articulated buses as well. I go there every year and he takes it for me to the annual obligated check up.

I find it very easy to use the tachograph. And because the rules are not in all countries of Europe equal, and I don't want to argue with police officers in whatever country (they TOO need to know that there is no need to use it) I don't think about it any longer and just put a chart in before I go away. For me it is a no-brainer.

1. new videos - I ran out of ideas for making videos about the bus. I've shown it all, I talked about it from every angle... So no, no new videos in the pipeline about the bus (I'm open for suggestions though - so if you have any ideas, I'm eager to hear about them.. :-). I did something remarkable at home though, redecorated the living room in a way I never saw before anywhere else, so I am preparing a video about that. It might be here around Christmas (the floor is not ready yet and ordering tiles takes an awful lot of time). 2. We are doing fine, yes, thank you. We will take out the bus for one final weekend, that will be next week. I hope we have some nice weather...
