This is completely true, people were completely OUTRAGED by Double Dragon III when it came out. I was there. Beat 'em up fans from all over the world gathered in front of Technos Japan's offices armed with baseball bats, chain whips, knives and empty oil drums, screaming for the developers to come out... Yet only one man answered our roars of OUTRAGE and that man was Renegade and Double Dragon lead designer Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the grandfather of all beat 'em ups and an all around bad man. Armed with his trusty knuckle dusters he was able to knock some sense in me and the rest of the OUTRAGED mob and we all had beers afterwards and decided to forget the whole matter.

I wish modern gamers were more apprehensive to the "mirco-transactions" which dominates mobile gaming. For a period of time, I was into a mobile game called Dead Ahead: Warefare Z, which was rather well made and free, but plagued with ads, micro-transactions, and "pay to win" deals. I posted to the game forum asking developers to consider adding a price (which I was sincerely willing to pay for), and in return, players could get a full game without the "micro transactions," ads, or "pay to win" elements. I was shunned by my fellow players! These idiots love their "pay to win" and mirco-transactions. That's when I put down mobile gaming, and realized many of these mobile games aren't games, but elaborate ads and flashy profit revenues to suck you in. Have you seen how some of these "games" offer in-game currency packs for $75 or $100? I cannot imagine paying $100 and still not having a full game (or hard copy to keep)! Who buys into this? Gullible fools! lol! What a bunch of bullocks! Perhaps the mobile/phone/tablet gaming market is strikingly different than the console/handheld gaming market? Anyway, thank you Big Daddy Top Hat for another insightful and refreshing video on this aspect of gaming history!
@dannyhefer67914 жыл бұрын
You got it right mate. The mobile market doesn't focus on delivering complete experience for one time payment. Basically non paying players become the small fishes on which richer players prey via leaderboards and PVP events. Free players are basically, mostly, NPCs. The actual players, the rich ones, don't actually enjoy the gameplay, they enjoy the power trip their money can offer, an some, the whales, will go to extreme to maintain their grip on the leaderboards. It's not all that bad, free players usually form alliances which can involve a significant amount of social interactions around the game, friendships can be born from that, but whatever the effort, the system remains what it is, and I think most free players are in more for the activity rather than the result...
@JoKoKilla4 жыл бұрын
@@dannyhefer6791 Sounds like you hit the nail on the head. It's a shame because there are some well made mobile games, which if developers turned into complete experiences, could be amazing and well received. But developers wouldn't produce these types of "games" if they weren't making money, and as long as there are customers/players, there ill be a market. At least, there are plenty of great games to sink my teeth into con console/portable systems. Cheers.

I had the thrid one on NES. It was good, you could do a lot of moves like throwing poeple off by pulling them by the hair, use walls or your partner to rebound when kicking. Only problem, you had "one" life until you could disable the other characters that are fairly different from Billy and Jimmy. The time you get use to one of them, in generally, you're almost dead and bam, another one, the ninja. It's the same story, they don't give you the time to get used to it. It was so difficult. I don't remember how far I went with the game but I think I barely reached the fifth level. Oh and I forgot, I think that your energy doesn't refill between stages but maybe I'm mistaken.

I remember the main reason so many people hated the NES version of Double Dragon 3 was due to it only giving you one life and no continues (not counting cheat codes) to start with. The recruitable characters both counted as an extra life and you get awarded a single continue for reaching stage 4. But that is all you were given to work with to clear the entire game. It felt like a lazy way to make the game harder. One fun piece of trivia is it actually was common for beat-em-up games to be easier in their Japan version. For example the NES Double Dragon 2 was also easier due to unlimited continues and not having to play the hardest difficultly to experience the full game. The famous arcade beat-em-ups Konami released in the early 90s were all more merciful in their Japanese versions.

Great video. What's interesting is that you introduced another obscure game to me which I'd never heard of, called The Combatribes. That game looks very cool and never knew it existed. If you did a video on that game that'd be cool. Of course, I watch all your vids so no matter topic you make, it's always great no matter what lol.

I wasn't a big fan of Double Dragon, but I loved Final Fight, so I appreciate Double Dragon's contribution.

I grew up during the arcades heyday. The original double dragon was pretty common to see. I never saw DD 2 cabinet, but knew it existed, due to the nes game. I had no idea a third DD game existed until the internet existed.

I like how the walking animation gives the appearance of 10 fps but when they jump it's suddenly smooth.

My crowning achievement in my personal gaming history is beating this game while I was in 1st grade. Idgaf if yall believe me, but after literally spending all weekend for two weeks,the second time I rented the game I had the patterns down. It comes down to Rome and Egypt. I beat Rome by using the ninja, and throwing the stars every time the boss appeared just off screen, it took all 30 or 40( can't remember what they start you with) but it was the only way I could win that fight. Egypt came down to some tricky jumps, but fighting the mummies and final boss I used the standard jump kick after walking backwards just as they got up from a knockdown, but it worked and I beat that damn game, took forever but I beat it. I could get really far in Fester's quest, only get to the technodrome in Tmnt, the last level in batman Nes, I even beat Bart vs the world, but as a kid no gaming moment was better than beating DD3. I let that damn ending music loop for what seemed like forever because I was so relieved..... I feel great knowing I legit beat this game as a child, and many adults still haven't because of the difficulty. Back then I had no clue how hard this game really was but once you see the patterns it's really just not getting screwed by the platforming in Egypt, and the patience to methodically beat the mummies and boss who fall for the same jump kick after knockdown.

finally, my favorite Big daddy is talking about my most beloved games in history, DD3 THE ROSETTA STONE, it all started with the famicom version, so i missed the Bimmy lee joke, and me, my brother and 2 cousins , played the hell out of it , it was a good time ON NES , at least, it looked great, it was hard, had great music and until now, i think the ending music is one of the finest ever made on the old nes. then i played the arcade version....and GOD ALL MIGHTY, what a piece of shit it was. the first ever PAY TO WIN arcade game, where u put coins for items..... i am glad that there is an upgraded version of the nes game on switch with some amazing quality of life updates, like no flickering, no slowdown and u can use 4 buttons for the jumping and the special attacks, makes it so much easier... LOVE DD3 ON NES as much as i love big daddy top hat.

"Pay to win" is...all arcade games. What am the only one who saved weeks worth of quarters to beat The Punisher? I mean don't misunderstand me selling in game items in an arcade game is scummy, but like all arcade games demand money for either continuing the game or trying again if you lose. Pay to win.
@tenshinshinobi4 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I was thinking. If I recall, that's why many arcade games were made with a higher difficulty. The company wanted you to pump in more money to see the ending. Only a few games like contra and its sequel would have a limit to how many continues you could buy.

DD3 changed the formula a bit on the NES and as a kid, I wasn't good enough to figure it out. But going back to it? Great game. Still a bit too hard but it's still pretty great overall. That arcade game was an abomination though.

This is an amazing game it has strategy and a lot of people never understand it. It is hard but it can be beat very easily.

Yep. The arcade microtransactions model is exactly why I barely got past the first level, then I walked away from the cabinet never to play it again.

DD3 arcade with its in game shop would be a mobile game today. Aside from Bimmy, DD3 on NES stuck out for being harder than all hell. Certain not Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, or Ninja Crusaders levels of hard, but still nasty enough to warrant whipping out a Game Genie. And not "challenging but worth it" hard. More like unfair AI, stun locks, and too tight controls hard.

The most ironic thing about the "pay to win" system in Double Dragon 3 is that for some reason with some timing and patience it was relatively easy to solve every situation with continuous flying kick forth and back. Any situation where forward, jump, kick wasn't adviseable was easily foreseeable.

I had all 3 Double Dragon NES titles, and while as a kid with hard work I was able to beat Double Dragon 1, & 2, however when I got Double Dragon 3 I can say it was one NES game that caused me a lot of rage quitting due to the much increased difficulty, and I'm sure kids telling their friends this was part of the cause for unsold stock of the game as well.
