Thanks for this! I'm window shopping, and am interested in double hungs, but my first thought was, "How would that work with my alarm system without paying for twice as many sensors?" Perfect solution!

I used to be a professional alarm installer. If we ever encountered a double hung window and could not get the window to operate properly with one contact between the two sashes, we would install 2 contacts (top and bottom sash). On most installs for major brand windows, we had to use two. I think there was only one installation where we got away with using just one contact. I was taught not to mount the magnet on the glass as the adhesive can melt and fall off from the heat.

In this solution, the magnet nor the sensor is mounted to the window. Both are mounted on the sashes. The alarm companies make more money if they train you to install two sensors. This solution works as well as two sensors, and I would say even better due to less sensors used, less chance of failure.

@@Ozarkwildso I got a question for you both, say there’s 3 windows next to eachother, if there’s an alarm sensor on one of the windows and you open a differnt one will it stilll go off???
@GaryBowen732 жыл бұрын
@@Mullenvtheworld alarm will only be tripped when the sensor and magnet are seperated....so if you have three windows, you will need three sensors...

Thank you for your tip on the window alarms. I'm curious how you would do this on a verticle double sliding window.
@user-cd2zt7yc2t5 жыл бұрын
thanks for posting the video, i am in the same situation so thinking of trying your solution. I'm curious though since the magnet and sensor are in plain view, what if someone broke the window and put (attached) another magnet on the sensor and moved the window up. That would mean the sensor never trips? i know there are glass break sensors available, but not everyone has a glass break sensor installed, so i'm just asking a hypothetical question...
@Ozarkwild5 жыл бұрын
I understand your premise, however one could just break the window and crawl through without ever manipulating the sensor. Adding a glass break sensor would be the only fail safe solution. A motion sensor on the inside would work as well.

Would this solution work with ring alarm sensors? genius solution by the way...thanks for the video even if you don't think it would work with ring.
@Ozarkwild5 жыл бұрын
It should work, providing your ring sensors are triggered by the standard magnetic switch.

@@Ozarkwild I used this video (purchased your linked magnets and tape) on my window sensors; everything works great! One think I'd like to mention: Some of my sensors were not reading as "closed". I was on the phone with my security company and we couldn't figure it out. I finally thought of flipping my magnets around thinking that maybe the pole orientation had something to do with it and low-and-behold, it worked! Do you know anything about this? I am just wondering if my "solution" was valid or if my sensor just happened to kick in.

great idea. I was about to figure something out myself. Do you have a link to the magnets and 3M discs you used? are your sensors normally closed or open, being they are wireless... I guess inverting the magnet could resolve that.... mine are hard wired... so I may have to reevaluate this approach...

When you move either wi dow with the original 2 piece alarm won’t it still trigger the alarm, if you can get it to fit right on the window.

Have you had any issues with the sensor/reed sticking/stuck/magnetized in the closed position?... Meaning the sensor doesn't recognize the window is open and thinks it is still closed. I've had issues with other contact sensors getting stuck/sticking like that.
@Ozarkwild2 жыл бұрын
No issues at all. The system has been working now for over 3 years. We just bought another house with double hung windows and I am about to mount the sensors the exact same way.

Before affixing the magnet to the window frame, I would have painted it white (with an epoxy spray-paint).

The alarm will not trigger unless the sensor contact is broken. If you have a complex situation such as a bay window, or three as you mention, and it is not practical to use sensor (contacts), you could use a motion sensor to cover the area.

I also went with the same company after almost getting ripped off by a contractor trying to sell me an ADT system for over 5K. Yep! I did my home work and came out with this Lifeshield. I've been working on the system for the last two days and I came across with two faulty doors sensors. I had to delete one of them and now, having a hard time to add it. Any idea? Thanks for your video, very clever!
