Hi. Alain Bashung is my favourite French singer. I cried so much when he died… he was a real poet. Try much more of his original songs like Madame rêve Osez Josephine La nuit je mens Ma petite entreprise Angora… and so much more!!! If you need help for the translation of his lyrics I will do it with pleasure. He was like no one else. But he was not a mainstream singer.

Hi Dereck ! I'm so glad you reacted to that masterpiece written by Jean-Michel Jarre. I know you always listen to songs without lyrics. But, you just have to experience something different. I'm saying that because Jarre is an icon in our country with his electronic music. You should listen to Oxygen part 2 or 4, as you like. You won't regret it. No lyrics, of course but his music is overtime. It's eternal too. Kisses from France.

Two great artists. Christophe was a trailblazer, always unique in his approach to songwriting. And Baschung was, simply put, one of the greatest poets in french popular music. I'm a bit sad that you approached him through a cover first, you should look more into him. Booth had had similar careers in that they started recording successful popular music and then went on on for decades (5 decades for Christophe!) and started becoming more and more rigorous and demanding in their art, taking their audience to uncharted places. I recommend you see Osez Jos'ephine, Madame Reve and La nuit je mens if you want to see more Baschung.

I love both, but as a synth fan, especially vintage synths, and the presence of Dominique Perrier (musician of Jean Michel Jarre), I prefer Christophe. The original is way better, no question about it... Christophe was a strange guy, but a very interesting musician. Someone took me to see him live a few years ago, he was completely alone on stage and kept us for almost three hours, doing brand new versions of his songs either on the piano or behind a synth wall were he was doing weird Giorgio-Moroder-like versions of his classics under a pink light... It looked like even he didn't know where he was going with that, but that was actually quite an interesting experience. :D BUT you should still check Alain Bashung's songs (Osez Joséphine, Vertige de l'amour, La nuit je mens...). He's way better with his own material. :)

Hello Dereck, Yes, Christophe's synth version is undoubtedly less expected. Especially when we know that it was released in 1974. Words of Jean-Michel Jarre the father of electronic music, musicians of Jean-Michel Jarre, this clearly explains that concerning the modernity of this title for the time. For Bashung, this might not be the title to start with. For my part, I'd rather recommend "Alain Bashung - L’apiculteur (Live officiel Confessions Publiques 1995)" on the KZbin artist's channel, or "Ma petite entreprise" the official clip. It will undoubtedly make you want to get to know this really atypical artist better. For the record, he really became known in 1980 here in France with the title "Gaby oh Gaby", diminutive of the first name Gabriel (for a man) or Gabrielle (for a woman), it's important to note it for the rest, a huge success that looped on the radio when no one had understood that the song was about the struggles of living of a man who wanted to become a woman, a transgender in fact. A very modern theme therefore for the time. Even today, perhaps only 30% of people who know this title almost by heart know what its real subject is. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️😊 Peace friends

Christophe’s original version is way superior. The only good thing about Bashung’s version is the violins at the end

It's six o' clock in the church bell tower In the square the flowers compose poetry A girl is going to go out to from the town hall As every evening I wait for her, she smiles at me I have to talk to her at all costs I will tell her blue words The words that we say with our eyes Talking seems ridiculous to me I jump forward and then step back In front of a useless sentence Which would break the fragile moment Of an encounter Of an encounter I will tell her blue words The ones that make people happy I will call her without naming her Maybe I'm outdated The winter wind blows in April I like the immobile silence Of an encounter Of an encounter There's no longer a clock, no longer a bell tower In the square the trees are asleep I return by train at night On the platform I see her smile at me She will have to understand at all costs I will tell her blue words The words that we say with our eyes All the excuses that we give Are like stolen kisses A subtle bitterness remains That would spoil the fragile moment Of our reunions Of our reunions I will tell her blue words The ones that make people happy A love story without words No longer needs the protocol And all the pointless speeches Would somewhat tarnish the design Of our reunions Of our reunions I will tell her blue words The words we say with our eyes I will tell her all the blue words All those that make people happy All the blue words All the blue words

Hey Dereck, you should react to "Parle-lui de moi" LIVE from Christophe at concert du 14 juillet 2008 in front of the Eiffel Tower and 600 000 people ( incidentally !). One of his last Gems in his long career. Fragile voice, supplicating lyrics, mesmerizing piano arpeggios, epic orchestral instrumentation.... climax..... Goosebumps & Bananas guaranteed ! Thanx for your channel.

Finally Bashung... Not that I don't like Christophe... The lack of drums is justified, all the focus is put on the dreamy & melancholic lyrics, in a minimalistic way. Bashung's version is great because it is respectful (it was an hommage to the original when he released) and still personal. The way he pronounces the lyrics in a very specific, almost Dylanesque style, loads them with even more emotion and reveals another mood for this great Christophe's song.
