That’s sad, but given the quality of life she had in the state one has to wonder if maybe it was for the best. To never be able to play with other kids, to never have a boyfriend or girlfriend, to never live an independent life, to be continually dependent on others, to keep visiting doctors and therapists for this procedure or that and have strangers poking and prodding you all the time. Is that really a life worth living?

@favoriler20123 жыл бұрын
The best solution for the young couple would have been to build a extension towards the garden and the part on the other side of the public way would become a garage with a small living space for guests over it.

IDK why they don’t ask permission to move the right-of-way to the edge of the property then build a contiguous addition.
@dinnahenna41633 жыл бұрын
Right?! And if they had tried but failed I’d have brought another house and extended that Instead of having a alley way down the middle of my house
@AgentAO73 жыл бұрын
That side of the lot is all theirs. Putting the alleyway on the other side would mean all neighbors would be accessing their garden.
@sharonadlam31953 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. Being a public accessway it wouldn't matter which side of their back garden it was on and at least they would get a complete house.
@andreaandrea67163 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. They should have done that when they bought the house as 'Planning Permission' (and God only knows who else they have to go through) take AGES to give permission for anything. But there's a good chance they'd have been refused because of ancient 'rights-of-way' laws that are protected to death in the UK. It has the benefit of preserving a country's heritage... but can sometimes just be asinine/lacking in common sense.

@@andreaandrea6716 "But there's a good chance they'd have been refused because of ancient 'rights-of-way' laws that are protected to death in the UK". This is almost certainly why and they probably have tried already. I'm not sure why so many are assuming they haven't tried.

Exactly, but British rules can be extremely, notoriously inflexible. Would even consider converting part of the old house for the access, instead of using the far part of the garden as the new access if it was the only way to compromise. The house must be cohesive.
@living_water-3 жыл бұрын
Surely, they couldn't think of an alternative to the alley issue? Underground or moving it to the side?
@sonaterese7992 жыл бұрын
It could be that local planners wouldn't give them permission - right of way is usually hundreds of years old and can be inflexible
@NannyYnez3 жыл бұрын
I don't see what the problem is with the passageway, it's called a ginnel and plenty of town houses have them. Although it's usually with one house on either side there are many conversions which have the house on one side and another bedroom over a ginnel. I like the light they put in it and it's great that a public right of way that has maybe been there for over a century has been retained. They will get much more out of their upstairs living room when they can get a balcony built with some steps down to the garden.

The public right away is often used for bins (and general access from the street to the gardens), taking it away would mean everyone would have to store them at the front of their homes, which overall would devalue the entire street. Given the noise problems I don't think they need any more reason to devalue even further.

Think I would've just built a new house to the side of the access pathway if zoning permits, and use old as rental, sell it off, or convert the old into a rental/ garage. The other ideas are too unrealistic, day to day. The alleyway can hide criminal activity, so having it to the middle of the house is a poor idea. The entryway off of it is even worse. Otherwise resign-wise the place looks nice and much of it works.

I live in Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, and I would assume that grants and benefits for disabled people are the same in England as they are here. There are grants available to make homes suitable for disable folk, no matter what their disability, here the gov will pay for large extensions, suitable bathrooms, internal elevators etc. I really do not understand why this project had to be crowd funded?

That would mean court hearings & getting the public works council involved. I know it may seem a simple solution if common sense is concerned, but since it’s a public alley & not part of the private ownership, that would mean going through all those hassles. And even if it gets approved, that would mean all your neighbors accessing your supposed private garden.
