Wait! Things to consider before buying playground substrate is that bark mulch is sliver central and the black rubber turns everything black , including sweaty hands and faces. staining most fabric. Also, The rubber pellets I'm familiar with is void of the metal threads... It appears the featured shredded tires still contain the metal. Food for thought while buying playground substrate

I kindda agree with Jason relocating the stairs. But I understand Sarah’s advice that it would be very costly. But they removed their only existing bathroom in the ground floor & I didn’t see any powder room in the new plan. So visitors would need to go up just to use the toilet? They need to rethink on that & I hope it’s not too late. The 2nd house looks amazing. Very bright & spacious. I’m glad they listened to Sarah’s advice on the light sources & space planning. I like this episode because I love the challenges of making the most out of small spaces.

Just starting to watch, but in the one that includes a child's playroom between the living room and kitchen-diner, I'd put a pocket door (with a large glass insert) on the kitchen-side wall, opening from the side wall that is the outside of the toilet room. That way, light will enter the playroom from the brighter, kitchen-diner through the glass insert in the pocket door, AND the door can be easily opened as well, providing easy access to the toilet from the kitchen-diner. I'd also put a few can-lights in the ceiling of the playroom and make an interesting wall design with different coloured LED lights on the outside wall. Plus the door into the playroom from the hallway should also have a glass insert bringing light in that way. I'll be interested to find out exactly what they do in the end!

All that wood he was going to bun in the field along with the timber from the roof would have lasted 2 years in his wood burner. The money he saved on logs he could have moved the stairs out of the kitchen!

When they finish the master bedroom upstairs, will there be a door? Are people going to have to go into the master bedroom to get to the family bathroom? That is what it looks like in the drawing. That would be a deal breaker for me.

I usually like Sarah's suggestions but sometimes I feel like she makes them for the sake the show. The fake grass suggestion was so weird to me. I am not sure what the point of that was. I also happen to agree that the stairs should be moved. It would block the flow for the kitchen to the extension. Better to do it now than later.

Love this series! It does strike me every time the intro comes on its ironic humor. England (European states in general) all have tiny size homes. So that everyone says - space - is the main issue is a no brainer. Though I've seen a few spaces in England in standard rentals that are the exception, meaning the bathroom in this one was untypically large... or the living/ sitting room or a kitchen... most are just plain tiny compared to US living. Hallways alone tend to be at least a foot wider by code requirement here in the States, though we can have small bathrooms, it's still typically larger than even a "large" bathroom there, and bedrooms! We, here, in NM USA have closets that are the same size as "bedrooms" in UK. Keep in mind 90% of bedrooms in UK don't have closets built into the rooms. My daughter's 4 "bedroom" rental is really only 2 bedrooms with two walk in closets as bedrooms. Works great for a baby, but baby doesn't stay tiny long enough to call it a bedroom after 3 years of age. Most kitchens come with laundry machines in them, usually a washer/ dryer combo unit and small at that. Though I do like the way they have found ways to utilize space where Americans waste it. Yes, count on every single one of these homeowners needing more space!

Most British houses were built either in Victorian days for workers in the industrial revolution or 1930s .My terrace has a disproportionately big bathroom because it was originally a bedroom.It was built in 1871 so wasn’t built with indoor bathrooms.

Yeah alright. To be fair, there are some pretty big cons attached to the big houses- Do you realize how much energy a house like that needs to either be heated or be cooled down? And just how incredibly awful that is for the climate? Not to forget how huge of an issue zoning is within US. You could live in a suburb and would have to drive at least half an hour out on average for basic entertainment and lifestyle facilities. So you add more car usage on top of it since the public transportation is already abysmal to say the least. A smaller, more efficient house in a denser area (not comparing it to UK necessarily) is honestly the way to go.

I think most of the time people are pulling equity out of the house to do the work. If you stick to the principle that every dollar spent gives you 2 dollars return it's not so bad, the only problem is very hard to stick to that. I'd rather have a smaller unmodernised house with no debt.

Built in closets are not too common in Europe. People buy wardrobes to hang clothes and dressers for folding items.

Very upset to see so much time spent promoting 'astroturf' - I can see the benefits under kid's play equipment, but wood chips are better & honestly, as lawn - think of the planet - or at least your local environs - the poor blackbirds hunting for worms, the ecology of the soil, how plastic particles will end up in the soil beneath, not to mention your kid's tum - no fun, methinks!
