Korey is right about religious imagery being kind of scary. I grew up Hispanic and Catholic and I have always been creep out by crucifixes with Jesus all flogged up and covered with blood. Also there's something creppy about old catholic churches and cathedrals. I always think of The Omen or The Exorcist.

As someone growing up Canadian and Protestant, I'm more used to 'modern' churches, the ones with a lot of flat surfaces and basic shapes. So I've had more of an admiration of old buildings, with the ornate design and construction (unless those weren't the ones you grew up in).

To me: The Conjuring is a really good horror movie, and a breadth of fresh air along with Sinister, that I think came out around the same time. The Conjuring 2 is not scary, but the characters were well written. I genuinely felt for the girl being haunted. Annabelle I never watched. Annabelle: Creation is a really good horror movie. Finally a horror movie didn't hold back on attacking and taking out characters which made it more believable.

But It could work though. It's been awhile since I saw TC2 (The Conjuring 2) but i'm pretty sure the Nun was defeated, so I'm not sure it'll make an appearance in 3. With how interesting and haunting the character is, a movie revolving solely around it would make for a good horror, and it can easily retain it's mystery while delving deeper into it's lore... if done right.

Oh DANG! I remember seeing the trailer for this movie before watching the Meg! And that “jump scare” TROLLED us!! What happened was at the end of the trailer, the nun appeared behind the person, and instead of the Nun jumping at the person, the person walked in front of a doorway and some DEMON JUMPED IN FROM THE SIDE!! Everybody in that theatre JUMPED then BURST into laughter!! We were ALL like WTF!! My mom & I were crying from laughing after that And WOW Warner Bros has the DCEU and the CCU (Conjuring Cinematic Universe) now! Dang! "The Nun" is poor and that is the fact. A terribly weak movie. Total lack of a fictional concept. Screenwriting laziness. Bad pace of storytelling and disturbances in climate building / gradation. Lots of boredom. How? I ask, How? James Wan allowed for such a directorial nightmare to be created? Both "Conjuring" are craftsmanship highs and fictional mastery in (what seems to been already heavily exploited) horror genre. The first "Anabelle" was weak (but this is an accident at work, from which the Producer took conclusions). The second "Anabelle" has a lot of heart in it and the knowledge of the genre. Wan masterfully build his Universe of Spirits, Phenomenon and Nightmares, he is undoubtedly a visionary and enthusiasts (like Spielberg or Kubrick), he writes his own path in this genre and he knows the job very well. And here .... dog poop. Movie is not totally bad. The execution (e.g. DP work) is at a high level, but decisions regarding the arrangement of individual scenes and building up “the world" is a misunderstanding. The climate is strong … for 1/3 -2/5 of a movie. The last act is a mistake. For half a movie Irena walks in a trance half-terrified half-surprised by what is happening around (and it should stays like that) ... but suddenly she climbs up to the heights of heroism and sacrifice. Lack of consistency in character building. Burke is so indistinct. He should be more determined and professional as a combat specimen on the church "dark side" (see Exorcist) ... and his inner demons. Seriously? There is too much of it and it is wrongly executed. Too many misleading tropes leads to deconcentrating on the main antagonist - Valak, which leads to blurring of the entire climate - so intricately built in the first half. The explanation of the Valak origin is so horribly, laconically treated … hands fall. The potential of physicality and characterization of Aarons gave such enormous possibilities. However, the director could not handle it. Wasted potential. The film does not deserve the description of "the most terrifying in the whole ... ble ble ble" (marketing) because it does not cause even half of this strange, subconscious feeling of anxiety that both "Conjuring" bring. And those compositional braces that combines “The Nun" with films about Warren's. Quite unnecessary. Valak was much more scary in “Conjuring 2” and they should leave him there. Shame. B.Cooper's "A Star is Born" (before projection) trailer coused me more emotions and shivers than The Nun.

I understand that they wanted to soften slightly the heavy atmosphere of the film ... but is it supposed to be in horror? It's not Marvel ... god dam it. In "Hereditary", the whole movie builds heavy atmosphere to show something so different in the last minute - that people in the cinema did not know if they suppose to laugh (many snorted with laughter) or cry. Such a courageous move, which turned out to be too odd and not quite acceptable. In "The Nun" the whole movie is like they do not know what they want to show us, black-comedy or horror. When you jump into deep water, you better be able to swim ... not just pretend you can. The Nun drown with the director / screenwriter duo.

Dude A+ for the amount of effort you put into your review. All the points you made are extremely valid. The characters were poorly written. Father Burke did not live up to the movies hype of him being an expert. Irene’s psychic talents made an appearance for 0.1 seconds even though it’s implied that’s the reason she’s accompanying. The atmosphere was also cliche AF, those red lights in the hall was soooo put on and the foggy creaky cemetery was the most cliche thing ever! Overall a weak horror movie that was trying to coast of the fame of the other films.

*Spoilers* I’m just realizing that Sister Irens visions plot wasn’t dropped like I previously thought. I was confused as to why the demon would purposely tell its history & how to defeat itself through the nuns Iren prayed with but that happened to be apart of her visions, which the father briefly mentioned. The confusing part is the demon also used nuns to mess with the three the only differentiator being they were all faceless or zombified.

Haven't watched the review yet, my pre-thoughts: I was so hyped for this movie ever since The Conjuring 2, I mean HYPED. But I have a feeling I will be disappointed since it's director isn't James Wan or David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation). It has the same writer from Annabelle Creation... who also wrote It (2017), which should be a good thing... but my gut says this one didn't hit it's mark. I'm guessing this is a high rental if not a low matinee.

The Nun is scary when she is just quiet and staring. When they have her roar and show the mouthful of monster teeth, she's not scary at all. Like they siad, it's like a video game when she does that. Both The Conjuring and The Nun had her roaring and snarling too much, and it was cartoony. In that little scene in Annabelle Origin where the Nun was pushing the girl in the wheelchair, that was very scary. Quiet, no roaring, just unexpectedly there and doing something evil. That one little scene was far scarier than the actual Nun movie.

The worst part about this movie is it's marketing. Saying how it's the darkest chapter in the The Conjuring universe. And yet yet yet they're cracking jokes and one-liners all over the place like it's some comedy. Especially that Frenchy character. That was like some comedy character that got lost on the set and then ended up in the horror universe like Jack Skellington.

You can't judge horror movies on "scariness" anymore. I stopped wanting to be scared awhile ago and realized that just won't ever happen again like when I was younger. So there has to be a new approach when judging these movies. That's based on atmosphere and storytelling. Considering the span of horror movies within the last 20 or so years, The Conjuring has been the best series that modern mainstream horror has had to offer. Name me another mainstream series of the past years that tops it because I gotta see that. Sinister (my top 5) would've been 2nd if not a 1st place contender had the sequel not ruined it.

Though not really scary, I personally find The Conjuring 1 & 2 refreshing, because the characters are not dumb as hell as you'd expect them to be in horror movies. Then again it's probably because they're based on real people and the director took it upon himself to be as faithful as their accounts as possible, so kudos for that.

What they got wrong is that the demon is named volac or valak and it looked nothing like a nun volac looks like a small baby who rides on a two headed dragon. And the upside down crops has been a lot of ignorance in a lot of horror movies the upside cross is called a St. Peter’s cross he wanted to be crucified upside down because he felt like he wasn’t worthy to get crucified the same way Christ was.
