The only Power Ranger media where there's barely any Power Rangers and the most powerful weapons in the universe are cars. But what I will say is that this film was essentially a grace period to structure a new PR show. It also felt like a benchmark in storytelling because the writers really had to step their game up especially with the original material was based off of. The years of combining different Sentai series and bringing back reoccuring cast members were coming to an end. So even though this movie and the Turbo series are my least favorite, there were a lot of changes that helped shape the new future of Power Rangers moving forward. Whether it be allowing colored actors to be the leader (Red Ranger). Or featuring an entirely new cast of characters with the occasional cameo of familiar faces instead of relying on the usual carryover rangers.

Some context for Turbo's Aesthetics: The Sentai they were adapting was car themed. Carranger was made at a time when the ratings weren't exactly great and ended up being more of a parody/comedy. That itself may sound weird because a lot of this stuff looks goofy but Sentai in general balances both comedy and Drama. Carranger leaned much more in the comedy direction and did well enough I hear for the franchise to continue. Adapting it for the U.S. proved to be difficult because it was so different from the more mystical inspired motifs of the previous seasons that had been used as part of Power Rangers. I think for his History of Power Rangers Series, Linkara covers this at one point. Because this series in particular was so goofy, Saban wasn't sure how to handle it. Some people wanted to craft a more narrative/serious direction, others apparently wanted to lean into the comedy. Growing up I don't ever remember disliking Turbo since I was happy we had more Rangers. Looking back at it I can definitely see the problems with the show. The source material being difficult to work around that has been a problem for the American adaptations more than a few times as certain cultural elements and what's considered funny etc just aren't going to translate well. Certain seasons such as RPM have found very creative ways of working around the more hard to adapt elements of their source material. As for this movie? This movie is entirely American made with no Japanese footage used, aside from the costumes of course. The flaws in this film are all on Saban.
@kenrickkahn2 жыл бұрын
Especially back then when they didn't understand the American Audience that well.. The Internet was just starting to take off and wasn't like it is today.. Now Japanese/Asian media(Kids and Adult) know what the American Audience want now cause of the internet.. Edited: And Yes it was Saban's fault too
@danlogrono86752 жыл бұрын
You are 100% true! I noticed all the problems as well, low key I’m kinda glad that they kinda learn their lesson from Turbo and when RPM came out they were able to use the Sentai which I believe it wasn’t good too for RPM to adapt and now RPM is know to be one of the best ones in the franchise
@thedefinitionisthis2 жыл бұрын
@@danlogrono8675 yeah it’s a miracle what Disney made with RPM. The Sentai series that season was based off of was goofy as hell, and damn near comedic. RPM is definitely one of the best PR seasons overall for sure.
@abhirao85822 жыл бұрын
@@danlogrono8675 Nowadays I am much more interested in the Japanese originals and have very little interest in the American made stuff. But I'm also happy to recognise when said adaptations did things for the better. On the subject of the comedic tone, the Japanese RPM (Go Onger) was indeed a comedy focused one and RPM turning out as good as it was, was a miracle. That said I think Sentai probably does comedy better than Power Rangers. Could very well be a cultural thing, but attempts at comedy in Power Rangers have never worked whereas they tend to gel better in the sentai (mostly).

So, fun fact, between the two Power Rangers movies, only Turbo is considered canon to the show. The first film is basically an alternative ‘what if’ origin for their ninjetti powers in the third season, but the Turbo movie is straight up meant to be viewed as the pilot to the fifth season. Like, the actual viewing order of the show is season 4, then the Turbo movie, then season 5. I bring this up because it does, in a way, kinda explain the lower budget of the second movie, particularly the costumes and zord footage, because it’s supposed to have a bigger sense of continuity with the show than the first movie. Basically, it’s best to think of the Turbo movie as less of a movie and more like a really long episode of the show.

The only thing it has over the first movie, is that this was actually in continuity with the show. So In that aspect, its technically “required viewing”. But really, this was just a season premiere stretched to an hour and a half. Looked like a made-for-tv movie, and felt like one too. The latter half of “Power Rangers Turbo”, after Tommy and the other veteran Rangers were replaced by a new team, was actually pretty okay. The series overall definitely was saved by “Power Rangers in Space.” Rewatching some of those eps, it really was a great show (for Power Rangers, anyway).

Y’all hit the nail on the head. Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie was the official end of “Rangermania”. The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team aside from Tommy weren’t regular parts of the show anymore, the show’s child audience had become teenagers and moved on, and Batman: The Animated Series & X-Men had made mature content for kids popular (making shows like Power Rangers corny by comparison) while the US anime boom was also beginning. Which is ironic because I actually credit Rangermania for opening the door for the 1990s anime boom to happen given that MMPR was based on a Japanese IP.

Didnt help that there wasnt an in universe reason to transition from zeo to turbo. It was also insinuated that zedd and rita were going to return as primary villains and then they just disappear with the exception of brief cameos

@@benjaminpeters6729 universal reason? We need to sell more toys.
@benjaminpeters67292 жыл бұрын
@@EnriqueStyle it was more that there wasnt sentai footage anymore. But they had established that the zeo crystal was a source of never ending power and by the end of zeo, they were basically invincible. So to throw that power away for cars makes no sense

Too be fair, that fakeass python was easily the most convincing effect in the movie. When you're starring next to Power Rangers creatures, you can't help but look real by comparison XD

Pacific Rim had a reason for not pulling out the sword early: the Kaiju blood is toxic, so carving up a Kaiju in the middle of a populated city is a terrible idea. That's why they only use the sword when they're either far away from other people or have no other option.
@Jman92854 Жыл бұрын
Glad someone said it in the comments, at least Pacific Rim had a REASON not to use the sword right away, meanwhile Power Rangers gladly blows up giant monsters in the middle of heavily populated areas.
