For their generation Kenan was an anonymous upstart on SNL, but for a lot of us he was already a childhood comedy legend from the 90s Nickelodeon days. His Bill Cosby impression was a regular thing on All That 😂

I grew up around the time where "All That" and "Kenan & Kel" first aired on Nickelodeon, and just seeing Kenan on Saturday Night Live was great. Even now, he's one of the few cast members on SNL who's trying to make the sketches work these days.

You could have walked right up to Keenan and popped that suit like a balloon, because is WAS a balloon!!! It's always bittersweet when one of my favorite childhood movies get reviewed on a "bad movie roast"
@NAVEMAN3
@NAVEMAN3 Жыл бұрын
I know that feeling. I think what makes a movie 'bad' is how it ages and to be honest there are some that I loved and haven't aged well. I think this film fits in this category. That's what I thought of after they reviewed 'A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'. I loved it growing up but after reading the original comics and before that watching it again years later, it didn't really age well. I think that's what happened to this film.

Not to mention also losing a bit of her confidence in track racing. Which is why the scene near the end when Albert is running along with her encouraging her is so important.
@BriSand1993
@BriSand1993 11 ай бұрын
@@antman525 Yes to all of this. It's not a perfect film but it certainly has a lot more heartfelt moments than it has any business to. Doris being a wet blanket is intentional because she's sad, not because she doesn't like people or being around them which is how Korey was making her sound like she was too snobbish and that's why people don't want to be around her. I think it's a terrible take because just because people don't engage with others on a regular basis or they keep their distance doesn't mean they're stuck up. I've been a Doris so that's why it hurts that others have this perspective that we just hate being around people when we might just be going through something and want to be alone for a time or we may not be as comfortable with some of the activities the popular crowds do. And here I thought Korey was all about you do you I do me. It's one thing to think the character's boring or uninteresting but to just dislike her because she's not a social butterfly is a little weird to me because it just makes me think is this how you think of actual people who are like this.

Keenan did an interview with Howard Stern like... 10 years ago, and he talked about how during this movie Bill Cosby talked with him and said something to affect of, "After this, you'll get all the women you want" This was way before the scandal but Keenan made a point that it was weird Bill would say something like that to him. It was probably a bit more graphic but you could tell it made Keenan uncomfortable.

I remeber at the time this came out, Fat Albert wasn't even rerunning anywhere (let alone on TV Land of all things) the only time you saw it was when seeing some videos in your elementary school class or if you had the Time Life DVDs. Even as a kid I thought the animated girls line of "having guest spots on Bugs Bunny and Jetsons" was confusing. fat Albert ran all the way to the 80s couldn't they have her say, "forget this I got to go audition for Jem in a hour"

At least Fat Albert wasn't an overrated cynical adaptation that became a cash grab, low-key shits on the IP and half of the human population, falsely advertised itself for families, and basically used this movie to continue rewriting the brand's history (akin to The Toys that Made Us episode about Barbie). It also has more heart besides its flaws. For example, if you thought Bill Cosby has a lot of baggage and found it ironic how this movie painted him in a good light, Ruth Handler was no saint either. Handler literally got away with plagiarism, stealing credits from her competitors, and done other shady things for her company besides tax fraud. Yet both Mattel and the Barbie movie still portrays her positively...

I watched this movie so much as a kid that it’s one of those rare movies I had on both VHS and DVD, I think it’s one of the better live action cartoon film adaptations released in the early 2000s, it’s funny, has a lot of heart, and Kenan Thompson was perfect for the role of Albert. It also has one of the most heartwarming/sad endings to any live action kids comedy film I’ve seen as you can see the hurt in the Cosby kids’ eyes that’s also helped by Richard Gibbs’ music for the scene, it makes me wish that one day the score could be released officially or unofficially.

I remember seeing this in theaters and then watching some of the 70s show right after. My parents enjoyed the animation segments because it brought back memories for them, but the film itself didn't leave much impression even as a kid. The film does have clever things about it (like the cartoon characters personalities changing as they are in the real world) and it has a decent cast. Overall, I think it would have been better to do a straight up adaptation that took place in the 70s or have a better or less bizarre way to do this fish out of water premise 🤔. Also, I agree about Doris even as a kid I found it odd that she was randomly crying at the start of the film, while her backstory about her grandfather might explain it, they still could have made the character more likable 🤔.

8:57 😆 That song is _“Welcome Back”_ by _Mase_ that was the 1st single that he came out with when he came back to the music industry after his 5yr hiatus from the music industry & the public’s eye(in the years of 1999-2004, 2004 is when Mase Welcome Back debuted). The sample for that song is from John Sebastian’s “Welcome Back” which was famously used for the 1970’s show _Welcome Back Kotter_ ( _John Travolta_ became famous from that show, great show by the way.) 35:23-35:30 Billy & Korey🤣 That is Derek Watkins aka Fonzworth J Bentley helping Fat Albert find clothes, Fonzworth was famously known for being P Diddys stylist, personal valet & assistant in the early to mid 2000’s during Diddys Making The Band show. Fonzworth was also the host for the “From G’s To Gents” the short lived TV show that made MTV Riff Raff(now just Riff Raff) famous. 44:44-45:03 🤣💀 50:05-50:18🤣🤣Martin 50:19-50:21🤣Korey 50:21-50:22🤣Billy

From what I remember, Forrest Whittaker was set to direct the film, and it was going to contrast the ideal "cartoon" '70's with the real, economically depressed 1970's. He bumped creative heads with Cosby, and several rewrites and directors later, this was the result. Good review.

I did some research and Albert Robertson died from a heroin overdose back n the 60s. There was article about him in Jet magazine with a picture of him. Pretty cool that Bill Cosby was able to create a cartoon that brought to life his childhood friends.

This movie should have been animated the whole run time. They could have done a revival series with that style of cartoon. Or like they said played it up like Barbie did!

I mean it took almost 20 more years after this to get it right.. This was the basic formula for these cartoons translated to real life
@maddieb.440
@maddieb.440 10 ай бұрын
@@Bigedub101 You already got movies like Enchanted, Rocky and Bullwinkie, The Brady Bunch Movie, Life Size 1 and 2, Masters of the Universe, Last Action Hero (with Arnold Schwarzenegger), and the live action Smurfs movies that all played up this sort of formula before. Granted some of those movies weren't good, but it's still a bit of a stretch to claim that it took almost 20 years for anything to happen between Fat Albert and Barbie.
