THANKS TO MAX FOR THE ITR! / @maddmax
The Acura Integra Type-R was an icon of the late 1990s -- and the only "Type R" model Honda ever sold in the United States. Today I'm reviewing a 2001 Integra Type-R, and I'm going to show you why the Integra Type R is going up in value.

A lot of people don't realize how insane this car is. A reliable, fast and nimble lightweight, front-wheel drive car that drives like a rear-wheel drive car. Still own a '91 LS. Amazing car. Changed the original clutch at 190,000 miles. I know a guy who had two Tegs stolen in late '90s. One was a GSR and the second was a Type R. He still can't talk about it.

As always, I enjoyed your presentation Doug. I owned a 2001 ITR in Nighthawk Black Pearl - Number 703. The car was a blast to drive and honestly had you driven it back in the day, you would have rated it much higher. The problem is that so many of the performance cars today easily outperform it that you just can't get the same excitement from it. Considering the front drive platform, the car was an excellent track car given the fact that it was designed to pivot quickly around sharp turns with a brief tap of the brakes and then flooring the gas to bring it back in line. Done right this was an amazing experience and only one other Type R owners can truly appreciate. Doing it wrong however would land you in the woods, off the track or into a telephone pole. I was much older than the average ITR owner when I bought mine for my 40th birthday. The car was unique as it had developed a cult following pretty much upon landing in the USA. Most people had never seen one before. I loved and hated the car. People would approach me to take pics with it, to touch it, to sit in it and so forth. Every young kid wanted to race me which I just was not into and I became exhausted with the car in a very short time due to its fanfare. It was a blast to drive but could be very dangerous for inexperienced drivers that would go for the brakes when they actually should have gone for the gas pedal instead to pull them out of a bad fish tale maneuver. If you honed your skills however, the car would do well below your 7 second 0-60 which could often be achieved in the low six second range. The car that felt like a grownup ITR was my 2008 S2000 CR. That car had been taken to finishing school and truly was a wonderful car to not only drive but I could sit down with a cold beer and stare at it all day long. My favorite of the lot and the one car that I will always regret selling however was my 2004 VW R32. While not quite the track car that either the ITR or CR were, the overall driving experience was simply incredible and that engine note was to die for. Right before my best friend died of terminal cancer in 2009, they told me not to wait any longer because $hi& happens and they told me to buy my dream car. I sold both the R32 and the CR and picked up a 911 Cabriolet. That car was amazing but much like the other cars mentioned here, I was always afraid to leave it any place in fear that it might get scratched of vandalized so in 2012 I sold it, bought my daughter a VW golf and sent her off to college. That indeed was my best ever car experience and only a parent will be able to understand what I have said here. I've been fortunate to have owned 27 cars in my time but now that I'm pushing 60, the kids must come first and that is just fine with me. One last note: If anyone questions your placement of the MR2 Spyder let me say this. It too was one of the most fun cars I have ever owned and while not as fast as the other cars mentioned here, it was not only a blast to drive but was incredibly comfortable. I picked mine up in Texas and drove it back to Long Island, NY 1,700 miles in 2 days and those two days were some of the most fun days that I have ever had behind the wheel. To all the young car people reading this comment, God Bless all of you!!!!!! Have your fun but please drive carefully. I've pulled more bodies out of cars then I care to mention and only two of them were from drunk driving, the rest were from answering what they considered to be emergency texts which ultimately turned into real emergencies. Peace to you all...................

I like the horn buttons, they are easier to honk while making an evasive maneuver vs pressing the middle of the steering wheel. Also they offer more control if you want to politely tap your horn to tell the car in front the light turned green. Downside is it's easier to accidentally honk your horn.

Literally right around the corner from my house sits a late model GS-R in pristine condition. The street it's parked on gets quite a bit of traffic so It must get a lot of attention. I'm baffled as to how it hasn't been stolen yet. I was almost tempted to knock on the owner's door and tell he or she to be extra careful. But that might have looked a wee bit suspicious.

I had a 2000 Integra Type R for a couple years and I loved it! 5 speed manual and limited slip differential it handled amazing. I did a couple modifications such as lowering it with eibach springs and added a Cat-Back exhaust and cold air intake. Ended up selling it to a college friend and immediately regretted it. René Van Sickle, you sir don’t know the first thing about a integra type r if you think they was only made in 5x114.3 cause they was most definitely made in 4x114.3 in 94-97 and I happen to own one that is 4x114.3. Easy to mistake for just regular 4x100 but it’s not. Not near as many were made in 4x114.3 and is quite rare to run across. Your actually gonna pay more for 4x114.3 itr stuff than 5x114.3 simply because it’s hard to find. Not nearly as desired as the 5 lug because of the iconic 16 inch itr wheels and the 5 lug had slightly better breaks than the previous 4x114.3. Just a little information for you because 95% of people have no idea that they made a integra type r in 4x114.3. Like I said I do own one and would be more than glad to make a review video for anybody interested.

There are so many faster cars from the 90's you could buy, though. For example, many of the cars from Road & Track's Need For Speed. The Corvette ZR-1 could easily be had now in great condition at that price. The Dodge Viper RT/10 could also easily be had with that budget. Of course the RX-7 would be easy. The 911 Carrera would be doable. The Supra would probably be difficult at that budget, and the NSX probably more difficult still.

Doug, your scoring system is absurd for the integra type r; only 2/10 acceleration for a 90's car that clocked 5.5secs to 60mph in the UK magazine Performance car. That is quick for a 1.8 normally aspirated car; 6/10 handling, yet it is quoted as one of the finest handling front wheel drive cars ever here in the UK, obtaining five out of five stars by the majority of motoring journalists. Think you missed encapsulating the immersive driving experience by a long way too, when changing at near 9000 revs on a back road with the chassis communication a layer removed from most modern cars. You didn't push the integra enough to uncover its special handling capabilities. This video has too much focus on aesthetics for a car that was built primarily for driver interaction.

They did the run in opposite directions. EVO magazine clocked 6.2secs in a later dc2.

My Integra drove like it was on rails. Ninety felt like a leisurely fifty-five and a fun drive. I had to sell after it was just too hard to get OEM parts to keep it maintained. Over 250K trouble-free miles.

The ITR came out when I was a Junior in HS. It was every kids wet dream. And because of that, there was no shortage of GSRs and RSs in the school parking lot with NOPI catalog Type-R badges and wings stuck to the back of them. But then one kid actually got a real one (wealthy parents who owned a Honda/Acura dealership) and no one thought it was real until he showed us the arm-rest plaque. And like a typical HS kid of that time, he painted it sky blue, added a JDM front end, and clear taillights. :facepalm:

Also, Doug is so right about 90's "sports" cars and visibility. I have a 90 and 93 Miata and a 2016 Miata. The difference between the visibility of the two models is night and day. The new Miata doesn't even feel like a convertible compared to the old NA versions. Just because you have about 350 degrees of viability in the old ones. The rear deck is lower, the doors are lower, the A pillars are almost non-existent. I'd certainly feel safer in a rollover in the ND, but it doesn't even allow you to tilt back your head and look up at the sky. The windscreen and roof line is right in your face. Literally... with my hands on the wheel, I can extend my fingers and touch the glass. The NA just feels more open, more free. More like a convertible.

People think its an aesthetic choice, but modern cars have to survive things like the small overlap test and side impacts without killing the driver. That means thicker pillars (often with airbags in them too) and more door reinforcements, and the aesthetic adjustments to that were more to cover that up. A 1990 Miata in a crash is pretty much guaranteed to crush your legs or face, in accidents that a 2016 Miata driver could just pop his collar, walk away from, and buy a replacement at the dealer the next day.

Some minor corrections/additions to the information in the video. 1: The 4 round headlights was not just the American market. The Mk3 Integra had the round headlights in Japan as well. The Japenese version of the Integra switched to the horizontal headlights in 1998 during the mid-model makeover. The 1997 US ITR and the early Japanese ITR had recessed double bubble headlights. For 1998 for the mid-model make over the Japanese market got the horizontal lights and the US market got flush-mounted double bubble headlights. 2: All Integras Type R destined for North America went to Canada in 1999. There are no 1999 ITRs in the US, but you will find them in Canada. The 1999 models were also only available in Championship White (the exact name of the shade of white for the 1997-1999 models). The colors for 2000 and 2001 are Phoenix Yellow and Flamenco Black Pearl.

shadowboy813 The Japanese model had the bubble headlights in 93 and 94 only. Honda switched to the horizontal headlights in 95 for the Japanese model, they did not wait until 98. The JDM ITR debuted in 96 with the horizontal headlights, the JDM ITR never came with bubble headlights. 2000 ITR came in Phoenix Yellow and Flamenco Black Pearl, the 2001 ITR came in Phoenix Yellow and Nighthawk Black Pearl.

"rags it out"? Dude, do you even Honda? I redlined my CRX all day for 890,000 miles (not a typo) and it didn't fail anything once, or not start, or break anything at all (except I replaced the clutch at ~600,000 miles) until I wrecked it into a guard rail. Did the same with my GSR and Prelude, minus the wrecking part. Today I drive an Element with just over 300,000 miles and it's still flawless minus a tear in the drivers seat. That's D, B, H, and K series engines that all are flawless with many hundreds thousands of miles and that are driven like I'm an asshole. I probably am... but point is, if you've never owned a Honda, you'll never understand. These things last a long ass time no matter how hard you drive them.

This car should have gotten an 8 or 9 for the cool factor IMO. This car largely defined what would come in the next few decades, and for those coming of age during the late 1990s/early 2000s, this car had the same effect that the Grand National did for those coming of age during the 1980s, or the Trans Am did for those during the 1970s. Most people who were into cars during the era went gaga over the car, and for good reason. I wanted one so badly when they came out. Even with the high price tags, it's a car I'd consider buying today as it's no different than someone a few decades older than me investing a couple bucks to buy the muscle car they wanted from their younger years (I'd probably try for negotiating a somewhat lower price tho!) Plus I don't see the value going down.

This. I drove a '94 back in high school and people even then were always interested in my car. It was a fun ride to learn how to drive stick in, and it was roomy too despite its size. I moved to my dorm with all of my possessions crammed in. I remember going to the local Sonic after a football game with my girlfriend in the color guard sitting passenger and her four friends (all teeny color guard girls) all laying in the trunk with the seats down. A couple guys from the marching band were sitting there eating when I pulled up, popped the trunk, and had five girls climb out. This car was very low maintenance and rock solid all year round. I camped in the car several times too; with the seats down, a couple pillows, and a sleeping bag, it was great with that nice view from the back window. This car was definitely the nerd's Trans Am of the '90s and '00s.

I never got why the Integra was sold as an ACURA in the US instead of a HONDA... Wasn't ACURA supposed to be HONDA's luxury brand?? 🤔
@npaul4171
@npaul4171 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kev27RS I've always wondered this myself given how the ITR was a Honda elsewhere. The ITR was far and away from being a luxury car, and the Integra itself was certainly far and away from this - at least relative to what Honda vs. Acura is today. All-in-all, its brand differentiation wasn't hugely different from the Civic. It was in some ways a little more luxurious, but it was ultimately another car where most of its value/desirability (of the standard models) came from the reliability aspect, and somewhat later on from tuners liking the car.
