I bought this car after my 2021 Mazda Miata was totalled in a flood. It's great and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys driving a car with good handling. It's not particularly fast but that's not why I bought this car (nor the Miata). I considered a Supra but it was too heavy and too expensive. If you're watching this video because you're actually considering buying one, I say go for it because I don't think you'll be disappointed, as long as you're aware of what this car is good at (corners) and what it's not good at (being fast in a straight line). It's amazing how even though it weighs 400lbs more than the Miata, it still handles just as well/delicately.

@@16xthedetail76 depends on your definition of fast. So far I've only seen i believe HKS offering a supercharger kit that's supposed to give it about 330hp. That'll make it much quicker sure, but still not particularly fast. Anyone could spend similar amount of money on an American V8 and be wayyyy faster. Any serious power upgrades to the BRZ would require upgrading almost everything else (clutch, transmission, differential). Not worth the money making this particular car fast. It was built for a reason and being fast isn't it

We had the 370z and currently a GTI. Fun cars to drive but completely different to the 86/brz and miata as they are more power focused. The 86 and Miata are just super fun to throw around as you really don't need a lot of power on public roads.

I usually don't like watching dougs videos for a mechanical pov of the car, it's usually more interesting to see him explain the quirks and features, but this time he did a really good job explaining the differences between this gen and the last gen even though most people just think it's simply +.4L to the engine and new exterior. Also like doug said just slight 30hp boost would make the car perfect, luckily you can get close to that amount with just some bolt ons and a tune.

By the way, I think I know why T O Y O T A and S U B A R U won't put a turbo on this thing.. From the first 86, the GT86, there never was really any focus on power, instead they opted for better handling performance. Speed was never the priority, which is why when people want it to make it speedy simple bolt-ons would already be enough.

The reason they tend to put Alcantara on the bit above the gauge cluster is because leather and plastic *can* reflect light and sometimes be distracting (it's usually not a problem, but in a lot of higher end sports cars that are intended to be driven on race tracks and have drivers that cannot be distracted, it can make a difference). Alcantara is a comparatively more expensive material to source and work with than pleather, plastic or real leather, so it isn't often found on the cheaper versions of sports cars

@@FatCokMcgee lol....If you think polyester is the same as carbon fibre, I'm not sure what to tell you. Take Ultrasuede, change it slightly, slap a new name on it and act like it's a "premium" product. Yep...you ARE a sucker if you think Alcantara is anything special. Created in 1970. Nobody wanted it until the name change. Yes, it makes sense for certain applications when you're sweating in a racing seat but cut the BS of thinking it's some kind of high end product. The production process and end results make it worth a lot more than a Lego block. You probably also think that a forged CNC machined wheels or engine blocks or engine blocks are no better than an a cast version because they are both made out of the same melted down soda cans but just have fancier names hey 🤔 Yeah I'm sure it was the name change that made the difference mate... 🤦‍♂️

I think I would rather have a naturally aspirated engine in the GR86, as much as I'd want it to have more power. Aside from the price, naturally aspirated cars simply have a more natural and communicative feel to them, which I think is better considering that this car puts more emphasis on handling and the way it drives rather than power and acceleration.

@@dmullen6996 A few ways of doing this would be increasing the engine's displacement, installing high-performance parts, fiddling around with the ECU, etc. If you still need some boost after the tune, a supercharger (particularly a roots or a twin screw) would do the job without really messing up how it responds.

@@dackbowland1876 the formula for engine displacement includes bore, so increasing that should give you more displacement (I suggest looking for a professional tuner or engine builder if you want your engine rebored). When it comes to the engine itself, I personally think it's best to leave it alone and not tune it in the first place. The car is good enough for me; I don't really need anything else from it. But if you really want the power, you need to make sacrifices. You might be speaking from an efficiency or reliability standpoint, but someone looking for a good project car to tune and race might not care if it means better performance.

Just looking back at this again weeks later. It looks pretty nice in white. The Savage Geese guys bought one, and had some protective wraps put on in strategic places. Someone mentioned that with the flow through vents coming in front, through the front wheel wells and out those vents behind the front wheels, the sides of the car are going to get a lot of dirt and if tracked, road gunk. Anyone have any experience with these kind of vents? With the wheels coming so close to the edge of the wheel wells, the sides of my '17 get plenty of road spray too.

The alcantara on top of the gauge cluster could be to prevent/reduce reflection (atleast a shiny reflection). A plastic cluster top could create a reflection on the windscreen. Considering the depth of the cluster cover and the exposure due to the angular windscreen, the reflection of the cluster top can be quite big and hinder driver visibility.

Good review as always, but I feel more people should know where this additional torque has gone; look up comparisons of the torque curves of the old 2.0l and 2.4l. Notice the massive torque drop at 3000-5000rpm, with not much of a payoff above 5000rpm in the old 2.0l. As you can probably gather, if the torque curve shot up after this dip, it would make for a very engaging driving experience, similar to one of a 80s/90s/00s turbocharged car with pitiful torque below 3500rpm, but unfortunately it doesn't. The 2.4 adds torque everywhere, and essentially eliminates the massive dip, making the car much quicker in the mid range, as well as faster up top, and therefore more versatile on the road and track. You can exit a corner in third, where you used to have to downshift to second, then to third, and waste time in the process. I cannot stress enough how different it would be to drive cars with those 2 different torque curves. Anybody who owns an GT86/BRZ (as I do, ´17 GT86) will know just how different the driving experience in the new GR86 will be. Not bashing the GT86, is is the funnest car i have ever owned, and one of the funnest ive ever driven, but even the greatest cars have their shortcomings!
@ellisjackson3355
@ellisjackson3355 2 жыл бұрын
I also imagined that they were trying to emulate the acceleration sensation that you would get with VTEC with that torque curve in the 2 liter. I also thought maybe it helps with putting the power down to the ground of you're exciting a corner at 3-4k rpms
@goodfella69
@goodfella69 2 жыл бұрын
@@ellisjackson3355 i see what you mean, although i think the main reason was emissions; the mid range is where most daily driving (City MPG) occurs, so they reduced the fuel consumption there. Like i said the payoff is alright above 5k RPM but by no means comparable to a true VTEC N/A motor.
@ellisjackson3355
@ellisjackson3355 2 жыл бұрын
@@goodfella69 well the FA20 makes 200 hp. Seems to me that a typical built NA VTEC b series usually makes about 200. The only thing is there is less power loss through fwd. So a built NA VTEC B might feel stronger in a 2 door DC Integra than a stock FA20 in an FR-S because of that. Although the weight transfer in the FR-S would help in a launch

I'm pretty much dead set on getting a GR 86 and adding a turbo kit to it. GReddy's prototype kit is already making about 320-350whp. I'm sick of driving an appliance car when I need to run errands. A nice fun daily with some power is the ticket. If I really want to go fast, I'll take my ZL1 Camaro to the drag strip
@rotor13
@rotor13 2 жыл бұрын
@@ellisjackson3355 Thats definitely not the reason lol. The torque dip is solved in 2 ways 1) Better ECU Tuning 2) an equal length exhaust manifold. Those two things alone have allowed people of the previous gen car to completely get rid of the torque dip and some that haven't done anything else than that, are matching the hp numbers of the new car.
