Doug's the type of guy, to have reliability issues with a Toyota 😂

Reputation is a big thing. Have a completely reliable BMW? You just got lucky. Have a Toyota with issues? Never happens, you must have done something or got really unlucky. There is some truth to both statements, but a lot of the time these things are greatly exaggerated.

The alternator had to be replaced twice (2 x 300$). Then Doug chose to replace known issues preemptively which wasn't really needed. Compare this to his old Range Rover video which almost everything failed with a total bill of nearly 20K USD.

$13k??? I haven’t spent that much on my 3 Land Cruisers over a total of 37 years of ownership. Always at the dealer. You got seriously taken to the cleaners. My 200 has a lot more miles and I would drive to Panama tomorrow. You should be able to park it all winter with no issues. I have a 1998 LC 100 with over 460 k miles. It sits all winter under a pile of snow less than 100 feet from the North Pacific Ocean. It is hooked up to a trickle charger. When I show up back in Alaska in May I’m confident it will fire right up like it always has. While I am there my 200 will sit all summer in Seattle and I know it will start.

1. Better mechanics over there. 2. Doug's usage of it made it as reliable as a Land Rover on a good day. Any car, even a reputable old Toyota, will have issues if you let it sit for months on a little island in the East Coast. 3. These old Toyotas only really show their reliability if you actually use them everyday and not let it sit on the least ideal conditions. Case in point: Victor Sheppard's One Million-mile Tundra. 4. Doug overestimated the LC's reliability and, like he said in the video, asked too much of it.

100% this. Cars need to be exercised constantly. People who don’t use features, let’s say something like, power fold mirrors. You don’t use them, except once a year, then they break. Hmmmm. That exact feature on my model vehicle is a common failure point. But most owners don’t set it to automatic. The car is 21 years old, the mirrors still fold in and out every time on original parts because I set them, and everything else in the car, to automatic.

Just my two cents, but it sounds like what you needed was a quality alternator, something to keep the elements out of it (WD-40? a small garage?), a good battery, and maybe some Stabil in the gas tank when you park it. Sitting's not good for a vehicle, for sure, but people have all sorts of seasonal vehicles that sit for months (boats, snowmobiles, tractors, summer cars, winter beaters, etc), and if you take a little extra care they'll be fine.

Doug, I have a 2008 Land Cruiser. Had the same failures ... starter, radiator crack, and idle pulley tensioner. The starter was my fault. I jumped the battery with the terminals on the wrong polarity and that killed the starter and started a small fire on the battery. Thus far, the water pump is good, but I think my alternator is starting to fail. Last week, the car started very weakly and then not at all. I charged the battery and the car started again. We will see if the alternator charges the battery this week. Also, the low range 4 wheel drive switch ( relay? or something ) is broken. Dealership mechanic told me to just keep in 4 Hi. That repair is quite expensive and I don't go off-road or tow anything with this vehicle. Outside of the starter, all of the failures started last year at around 200K miles. I'm at about 215K miles. I hope to keep this to 300K. Love the vehicle and it has served my family well for over 15 years with little to no problems in -40 Degrees temp in Alaska to 100 degree heat here in the South.

While remote diagnostics from a random stranger aren't very useful I would like to say that a trickle charger on the battery might have helped with the alternator issues. With the vehicle sitting for so long the battery gets drained down then the alternator has to work harder to top it back off. For some vehicles you can also buy an oversized alternator to help with that. And I noticed you didn't say you bought a new battery for it, the old one could be failing again taxing the alternator. But I could be completely wrong. Like you said the salt air is hard on a car and could have been causing corrosion to the internals of the alternator which wouldn't be a Land Cruiser specific problem. I believe for your use case that you should just buy a new 3 row SUV every couple of years to keep out there. That's really about the only way you're going to have a "bulletproof" ride out there. Good luck and thanks for the videos!

Bro I gotta see what you've planned for the replacement. That rust looks way too much, more than my 14yrs old fortuner has. So your first protective measure should've been rustproofing dercoat. I've driven though a puddle so deep the water flowed higher than the engine hood. No problem there, it took me home just fine. I should've checked the Intake for water accumulation but I didn't. Short story, next day the alternator went out. Cranked it start with a stick, found new alternator from scrapyard, drove around and its all good again. Last month again the damn alternator broke. This time went for an OEM one, lets see how it does. The point of the story is, Alternator is the only thing susceptible to breaking when driving around in water, given you don't breath in the water and bend rods. Putting a snorkel, rustproofing and Alternator maintenance would've done the job. If your new car isnt a newer LC, I beleive there won't be anything that would suit your needs for this purpose.

I have a 2008 Lexus LX570 (basically the same vehicle) - approaching 120k miles. Bought it a little over 2 years ago with 89k on it. I really hope I"m not knocking on wood here - but I literally have not done anything to it since we bought it. And I drive it offroad fairly often, I mean some more serious offroading. It's been an amazing experience so far. I came out of a 2008 Toyota Sequoia that I did have to replace the starter and radiator on at one point (yes it's in a tough spot)... But this LX (landcruiser) has been rock solid so far. I'll just do things as they come up... That's the thing with these toyotas. Best not to pre-emptively do literally everything upfront like you would on a GM/Ford etc as it's usually money not well spent. 100k miles is insanely low for all those troubles you have had.... Anyway I plan on owning for another 2 years then upgrading to a 2013+ model. I think the previous ownership experience matters alot too.

The idler pulley is something you just do along with the belt tensioner and serpentine belt at 100,000 miles. Not expensive or hard to do maintenance item yourself. Guessing your alternator issues had to do with a chronically undercharged battery combined with what seems like a lot of low speed off-road driving. Would imagine a battery tender and perhaps a high output aftermarket alternator from an off-road specialist company would’ve solved that issue.

If I am fixing something on my vehicle and if any of these parts are easy access with a repair I just replace it. I did a timing chain recently on a vr6 on a GTI and replaced the water pump, starter (was making some noise) and the alternator along with a few other parts. I have put over 30k on the vehicle since and have had zero problems. Preventive maintenance of common wear items is better than being left stranded at the side of the road. As a land cruiser family. We are all in GXs or various ages and generations now. When the LC became a 100k car, the North American Prado became the car thr LC used to be.

The secret to Land Cruisers is "don't fix it until it breaks" except the water pump and timing belts on the 4.7L

Love Koontz Toyota. I had a wheel bearing fail on my 2011 Highlander a couple years ago and they fixed it while I was a tourist for the weekend. Saved me $55 a day in DC parking and the price was fair.

LOL. On my 9 year old jeep cherokee I just replaced Oilfilter housing, air-condition compressor, radiator, transfer case, all 4 wheel bearings, stuck brake calipers. All in all probably over 10k. It's a good feeling to have bought the extended warranty.

I think a lot of people are missing the chapter "I asked too much" and even on the forums, you'll hear most people saying the same things about their LC/LX. With that said, there is a Australian alternator that is waterproof. It's not cheap. It's 3K just to buy, if I remember right, but it does make it so that the alternator becomes pretty much bullet proof. The radiator update pretty much fixes the common radiator issue so once replaced you won't have the 100k radiator issue. Want to say the update came out sometime in 2020-ish (someone correct me here). The radiator is also like 4 bolts to replace.
