Xiaomi presented the car for a few days in Paris and I had the chance to go see it. Here's a few quirks that were shown to me by the staff that Doug didn't mention: ● There's a rear spoiler that lifts up in sport mode. ● The frunk is hermetically sealed, and the marketers were bragging about how you could fill it with water and ice to keep stuff cool. The little circles that you see at 16:43 are drain plugs to empty it once you're done. ● The car has voice recognition (like many others) but if you have Xiaomi smart home gadgets you can ask the car to turn off the lights or turn on the heater even when no one is home

also, those under the rear seat storage compartments look just the right size for a compact umbrella, which is probably their intended purpose(either that or for taking off your shoes)...some European cars had a slot in the door for an umbrella, and this must have been Xiaomi's solution.
@garythecyclingnerd621914 сағат бұрын
Not really. These feature ideas can come from anyone. Typically designers, who are not engineers. The engineers make what designers possible, although sometimes these are the same person. The product manager ultimately has responsibility over what is included. They can axe any feature or demand features be added. There can be several product managers responsible for different portions of a vehicle that all report to a product leader who decides if they are meeting profitability goals.
@ruk2023--14 сағат бұрын
@@garythecyclingnerd6219 I get the feeling you're speaking from theoretical knowledge rather than practical. The idea that the product manager has the final say is a fallacy and I saw that from having been a PM for years. Any seasoned PM will tell you that they are facilitators rather than dictators. They are constantly outranked by heads of departments pushing their own agendas and my comment was pointed at the fact that a gopro mount is the solution to a problem nobody has. That's typical of engineers being allowed to lead decisions (a weak PM will allow that or office politics may mean engineering has a bigger role than it should). Either way my comment was more tongue in cheek than a serious response.
@XTan-jv4gg14 сағат бұрын

@garythecyclingnerd621914 сағат бұрын
@ No, I am speaking from experience working as a design engineer in multiple Fortune 500 companies. If your VP or senior manager is pulling rank on you, then that is their prerogative. Typically I only saw those guys focusing on profitability/margin of the product the PM was envisioning. They would also ensure that PMs are hitting goals as defined in the product development plans. I have pitched ideas to senior leadership, even had some developed before doing so. I also push back from the PMs (especially if they’re under marketing) for ideas that are difficult to manufacture. But the idea engineers have that much power I find to be absurd. Especially the larger the business, the lower the the influence any engineer can have.

Doug once again didn’t do his homework when it comes to Chinese cars… Here are a few things he missed: Xiaomi sells a HUGE range of accessories for this car. For example, those GoPro mounts aren’t just for cameras. They’re basically little tripod slots where you can attach whatever you want. There’s a slot under the central armrest where you can insert branded cartridges - like air fresheners - and the car will distribute the scent through the air vents. You can also get their branded flashlight or a big power bank for that slot (there are even more options). Recently, the car got an update that added English language support. On the backs of the front seats, you can attach iPads, and they’ll automatically connect to the car, letting you control things like climate and other functions. The central screen supports phone mirroring (like iPhone mirroring), and the car connects to smart home systems, meaning you can control all your home devices through the car using voice commands. The onboard AI is so advanced that you can literally ask, “What’s that building to my left?” and the car will recognize it, look it up, and tell you all about it. And the HUD - it’s a massive 52 inches. You can project things like the map, speed, battery info, weather, and more, all at the same time I definitely haven't even mentioned the 1/4 the features weren't mentioned in the video

Actually, China is so big and produces all kind of goods, including high-quality and low-quality. However, high-quality goods often only sell well in Western markets when they are produced as OEMs for Western brands. Chinese high-quality brands struggle to gain recognition in the West, only those cheap low-quality goods sell well in the west, which leads to the perception that Chinese products are of poor quality while Western brands are seen as superior. Remarkable how careful Doug is crafitng his words not to offend especially his US audiance. But the facts speak for themselves: This car finally marks the end of the European and US car industry. When a Taycan-like car can be offered for a third of the Taycan price, you can try to hide behind tariffs for some time, but in the end the market always wins. It's the basic promise of a global market and a global division of labour that better products can be offered for a lower price to the customer. Lower wages and local availability of natural resources are not unfair competition. Yes, there are Government subsidies in China, but at least in Europe the domestic car industry is also strongly supported by visible and not-so-visible support mechanisms.

These are EVs, when China makes a gas car that beats the west quality, then I will agree. I will never buy an EV. I also only want a sports car with a manual transmission.

Here in the EU they now put big Tariffs on any Cars made in China, which while on one Hand will definitely make it more difficult to see some, on the other Hand it of course also helps all the European Countries and the Cars they make which i of course support Also for some Reason certain Chinese Brands have a Tariff of 18% for some they can even go up to 35% I wonder what the Differences are there Also Merry Christmas to everyone reading and as we say in Germany, Have a "Guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr" which translates to "Good Slide into the new Year" Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

I mean Europe has a 45 tarrifs on Chinese cars but god forbid the chinese tarrif back..
@d1492ay14 сағат бұрын
Tariffs may protect your local market from Chinese cars for a time, but it will hurt brands like VW in the long run because they will not be as competitive as they should be in order to survive around the world. VW lost huge market shares in China because they are not able to build cars like this and sell it in China. Keep in mind that Chinese auto market is the largest in the world (26 million cars sold annually) vs. able 2.8 million in Germany or even the US (at about 16 million a year). So, it is critically important for VW to be able to compete in China, because if they can do it there (the most competitive market in the world) then they can compete anywhere!

@@d1492ay That's a good Point. Especially considering that the Chinese still buy a ton of especially German Cars Though when it comes to other Europan Countries Brands, they don't really sell much in China so them having Tarrifs makes more Sense, but then, they're also all in the EU

@@GothPaoki Have there been any Complaints of the Chinese putting Tarrifs on Products from European Companies? I know that German Luxury Cars, Supercars and of course Italian etc. Luxury and Supercars cost a ton more in China compared to the EU. So i guess the Chinese have been putting Tarrifs on European Cars since forever anyway

@@d1492ay And the worst part is the VW plant in China export a bunch of cars back to Europe, and those are subject to tariff too.

Did you really just ask why products made in china are cheaper than those made in north america?

Because minimum wage in china is $370 per month 😊

@@AVB_42 Except that the Xiaomi factory is almost 100% automated... So high wages or not, doesn't matter, it's a tiny portion of car value.
@AVB_4212 сағат бұрын
@@LambdaWave84 it's not 100% automated but even if it was 100% automated, low wages affects literally every industry indirectly. Also, the main job of "automation" is to assembe the product. Car is made up of thousands of parts and most of them are not manufactured by the brand itself. They outsource the parts from hundreds of different vendors. For example battery, motor, infotainment unit, speakers, tires, wheels, stearing wheel, horn, ac compressor etc etc etc. All these vendors do the real manufacturing. They have hundreds of thousands of labour force and when the official minimum wage is $370 per month, it can directly affect the car price. Now say by similar way, semi trucks are being manufactured. If the cost of semi trucks are low, it directly affects the logistics industry and cheap logistics literally affects every single thing, from cars to a loaf of bread. Same thing happen in each and every industry in china. BTW minimum wage in country like India is $70 -$100 per month and that's why apple has already started iphone manufacturing there.
