I feel like it's because exotic supercars and hyper cars are all trying to achieve the same one goal: performance and style. And then what ends up happening is you more or less predict what the car will have before you even see in it. And then many of your predictions are right. However, these quirk failures can't be so easily predicted. Because all quirk cars include a manufacturer taking a risk into unknown territory, hoping they start a new fad. Many fail, some succeed. But because they all start with the idea of being the next new thing, it's almost always a surprise to see to what extent they go to bring that quirk experiment into reality.

That bed makes a lot of sense to me. I was on the market for a truck last year. I liked the Ram 1500 and ordered the cheapest one. With shortages making it impossible to get ANY truck from any brand, I started to look elsewhere. So my dealer had a very nice, brand new Ram 1500 Limited for way over what I wanted to spend. But since it was literally the only truck available, and again, it is VERY nice, I convinced myself that I would make it work. Fast forward a few months and I realized that having such a nice truck, while incredibly comfortable, changes your whole approach for the way you can want to use it. I didn't want to take it offroading in fear of scratching the chrome and nice wheels, and I was way over cautious of what I throw in the back in fear of denting anything. So the Blackwood's bed/trunk makes sense to me. It has a huge amount of usable trunk, so you can put a lot of stuff there. Probably golf clubs or nice luggage. And you get another work truck for work purposes. It does makes sense.

Quick history lesson: I have been into the auto sales for over 30 years. The Lincoln Pickup is now the Ford F-150 Platinum. Ford learned that it's customers did not want to go to two dealerships "Ford & Lincoln" to shop basically the same truck. Ford launched a luxury trim for it's trucks and SUV's in the 1980's called the Eddie Bauer trim. Some of us remember the rich kids having Eddie Bauer backpacks in school. Anyway, all of us laughed "including me" at the idea of a luxury trim truck. It turned out to be successful and most of us remember O.J. Simpsons white Eddie Bauer Bronco. GM took notice and started the Denali trim for it's SUV's. Ford then took it a step further with the King Ranch and Harley Davidson trims. Ford also went further with the Lincoln Blackwood but it was replaced with the Lincoln Mark LT. Ford realized that they were missing out on a lot of sales and learned that it would be more profitable to offer the Lincoln truck in a F-150 trim, so it became the Platinum. GM truck customers would come into the dealerships looking for luxury trim pickup truck so GM finally built a Denali pickup. Now, everyone including the Tundra and Titan offers a luxury trim pickup truck and the rest is history.

I saw one today in the parking lot of the local Publix in St Augustine Florida. It looked just like a 2002 Lincoln Blackwood with wide whitewall tires. I liked it when it came out and like it even more now. The gentleman who was driving it told me he'd owned it since new and it had 220,000 miles on the original 5L engine. They only built about 3400 of them and it's both a Lincoln and a usable pickup truck (as long as you don't expect it to function as an actual pickup truck). For someone who enjoys rare vehicles, doesn't want to help people move stuff and has a sense of humor, it's a perfect fit. If I can find one for less than $5k, it will be mine!

2002 was my first year at Ford HQ. Here’s the unconfirmed internal story I was told re how the Blackwood was born. In those days, Ford had a multi-day program for its hundreds of annual new hires from every department (e.g., engineering, finance, IT, legal, etc.) called New Employee Orientation (NEO). A fun part of NEO (most of it was B-O-R-I-N-G) was breaking into small teams and designing a new vehicle (my teamed designed a Lincoln LS station wagon) and then giving a brief presentation about your creation to all of the other teams, NEO leaders, and at least one member of the Ford vehicle design team. According to our NEO leaders that year, the most famous moment in NEO history was when a random team stunned everyone-but especially the Ford vehicle design team-with the presentation of their brilliant idea for a special edition of Ford’s best-selling F-150 truck, which they called the “F-150 Harley-Davidson”. As the story was told to us, that random team of new employees from multiple departments were immediately rushed from the room and tasked with pitching their shocking why-had-no-one-thought of-this-before idea to a quickly-assembled group of Ford designers and executives. The Blackwood, we were told, was just the latest attempt by Ford (Lincoln) to further expand the market for its best-selling vehicle, the F-150, as inspired by that greatest moment in NEO history.

Great video, although as a former SSR owner feeling a bit miffed on the trunk... The SSR took this to the next level as far as trunk carpeting and saddle bags. Fully carpeted trunk and carpet on the underside of the cover with logos and plastic fake-wood slits, tracks for accessories, grocery-getter style net, and best of all, saddle bags on either side that had a separate key to lock them. Totally stupid in most use cases but I think that rivals the Blackwood's Trunk for quirkiness.

In February of 2005 I was a junior in college in rural Michigan, and was walking through the off-campus apartment complex where I lived. I was a couple buildings away from mine, and and elderly man with no shirt on was outside and appeared to be in some distress. I felt that I couldn't ignore this man, as it was 25 degrees outside, and he was older, and had no shirt, so I stopped to ask him if he needed help. He said he did, and that there was an emergency in his apartment. Thinking his wife was having a stroke or some other awful thing was happening, I followed him into his building, and into his apartment. There he informed me that he needed a young man with a pretty face to help him don his cashmere sweater. It was then that I realized I had been duped. After offering me a drink at 10 in the morning, and a series of non-sensical rants about things I've long forgotten, I managed to leave and get to class. Several days later, I saw the man again, this time behind the wheel of a Lincoln Blackwood.

I came across market research that showed a lot of families are now buying full-sized pickups like the F-150 as the family car. Like instead of a minivan or a SUV. Wait a minute... was this a used Blackwood that you almost bought? Because the Blackwood was only made for the 2002 model year. Are you sure this wasn't actually a then-new 2006 Lincoln MARK LT that you test drove? Anyway, what made you choose a Chevy Silverado instead of the GMC Sierra? Starting with the 1999 model year, the Silverado and Sierra were no longer completely identical (but there really was NO difference between the 1988 to 1998 CK/Silverado and Sierra except for the Sierra not having the Chevy chrome bar on the grill... and in fact both Chevy and GMC made a Suburban in those days!) but I must say I think of Chevy trucks as always having been a step down from GMC trucks, and I never really understood why Chevy trucks needed to exist at all because GMC exists!

Now I really want to see Doug review the 2nd generation Lincoln Navigator. Particularly the top of the line, end of the generation '06 Luxury/Ultimate package. I picked up one of those a couple years ago for between 5 and 6 grand, and I can really see how the Blackwood is very much like a stepping stone between the 1st and 2nd generation of Navigator. It's like they demo'd some of the tech in the Blackwood, and also learned some things about body styling and what people actually want in a luxury vehicle. I believe the only parts on the 2nd generation Navigator that are shared with its Ford counterpart are something along the lines of the 2nd row door panels. And that's it. Well, there are under the hood parts that are shared, but interior and exterior parts that can be seen are pretty much all specific to the Navigator. Not only that, but the 2nd gen Navigator interior harkens back to the '61 Lincoln Continental interior, somewhat mirroring the dash setup.
