In America you don't do roundabouts and barely do corners... In Europe and GB especially we're all about roundabouts - turn signals and Spaghetti Junction - Gravelly Hill Interchange, better known throughout the UK by its nickname Spaghetti Junction, is junction 6 of the M6 motorway where it meets the A38(M) Aston

iversonloco Not true, I have a 95 740i with 298k miles. The turn signal would not cancel on left turn. Still felt like new when turning it on, but it would not cancel. Took the switch out and it was heavily worn, still felt solid but was worn and barely catching on the clock spring.

I drive my 1998 740IL every day. 230,000 miles . I used to work on them for a living when they were brand new at the dealer. They looked awesome then and they still do today. Everywhere I go people talk about this car ….do you want to sell it ….I like your car….. a thumbs up at the gas station. There are some things created that will never happen again and this is one of them. All the stars were aligned.

I saw one for sales in the UK about 11 years ago, 750 V12 about 100k on the clock, it was owned by an old guy living in this massive stately mansion not far from me, 1 owner full BMW service history, completely speced out he only wanted £1250. its the only car i've ever regretted not buying, but I was working as a car salesmen living it home saving up to move out.

At the end he sold them all except the e46 and after 10 years of owning it a drink driver hit him. Was the end of that. Now I have an e46 318ci and I’ll never sell it. Oh, I cannot forget seeing E38 for the first time back in the 90s. There was a black one parked outside of a mall. Back then, just a BMW was very rare in my area. Seeing the 7 series in person was sensational. The front light tilted forward looked exotic, and the whole car looked sturdier and classier than any other car I had seen. Why can't BMW design like this anymore?

Not quite the same thing but for a few years when I was younger, my mom had a 5 series of the same vintage (1999 or 2000, I believe) and I always loved that car. I wanted to learn to drive in it back when I was like, 12. My dad once took me out on the highway when we first got it and just floored it when there was nobody around, doing 120 or 130 down the open, empty roads late at night, giggling all the way while I was planted in my seat. They sold it to some guy who just wanted the wheels off of it cause it had some sport package or something, and NOW, with me having been through therapy and prepping myself to work for the first time a lot later than I should have, I am considering one of those, or one of these, since they seem pretty attainable at a price of 3 to 6 thousand dollars. I'm honestly pretty hyped for it.

I once owned a 99 750i in Cosmos black, and I adored it. Double glazing, rain sensitive wipers, auto-tilt rear view mirror, heated wing mirrors, television, front and rear phones, memory seats, and tiptronic gear select. The steering wheel moved out of the way, and the seat moved back, to let you enter gracefully. The power was endless, and for the time, the kickdown was awesome. I could drive hundreds of miles and feel like I'd spent the day in my favourite armchair: driver fatigue was never an issue. I still miss her, and her perfect beauty. In a perfect world, I would want to be buried in her, like a Viking chieftain. I'll never own another car that would make me so happy.

The real problem is not that new cars have tech, the real problem is that 99% of the time they have shitty tech, lack of fluidity, insane input lag, frame drops, everything is slow af, just look at the new 7 series key, yeah it’s cool that it has a screen but what a shitty unresponsive low-resolution low refresh rate laggy screen. At these price-ranges they could have easily included high quality hardware but they didn’t. Also for new french cars for example who though it would be a good idea to control radio sound and climatisation through a laggy touchscreen ? Buttons are required for things that are THIS important, so that we can turn the volume down without crashing the car into a wall, so that we can control climatisation without hitting other cars etc.

Fantastic review Doug. I have a regular 740i and you nailed every single point to the letter. These cars are a joy to drive at any speed and and still get decent fuel economy for being 2+ tons. Mine still gets 26mpg highway, just like it did when it was brand new. Even lacking the massage option, one doesn't notice they've been driving for 10-12 hours. This particular car looks like an Early 01 model, probably a July or August 2000 build. My E38 was built in September 2000 and got the 16:9 Widescreen setup. Just that touch alone makes it look FAR newer than it is. Add a MkIV DVD Navigation drive and map disc updates can be found through 2016. Quite useful when cell signal isn't available. Mine actually got the MkIV upgrade under warranty and it earned its weight in gold in Middle of Nowhere Indiana.

You can spot the trim in the car during interior shots. 750s are full leather - stitched door panels, dash, etc. 740's are vinyl/leather inserts for airbag area on doors, but otherwise vinyl. Either way, that movie is why I randomly bought my first E38 back in 2005.

Only downside was doing the 100k km service. 4k Euro and there was nothing wrong at all. I laughed about the trunk. I always thought mine was broken! And yes... @@owendesautels9612 Is a rolls better? Of course - if you're looking at luxury and status symbol. But I would much rather have an e38 MSport than a rolls royce from the early 2000's.

I glad so gladDoug finally produced a video review of MY favorite Luxury car of all time. I have owned somewhere over 137 new and used cars in my 55 years and I purchased my 2000 BMW 750iL brand new in 7/2000 for the sum of $104,772. It has all options except executive rear seating options (could not locate one with that option at time of purchase). It came with 16" BBS wheels but I purchased a set of 18" factory wheels as a dealer installed option so I had an extra set for bad weather. The everything still works on the car (including all pixels, cup holders have never been used because i do not allow eating or drinking in any of my cars), and the only thing fixed outside of normal maintenence is replacement of the factory Navigation with a new Mark IV navigation computer after the original quit working this past spring and the fan and shroud and radiator after the fan decided to explode. I have maintained all factory service intervals and any issues were taken care of immediately. The only thing currently at issue is the roof clear coat has started to peel and just the last weekend the check engine light came on and threw a code for "cam positioning sensor" which will be fixed before putting the car away for the winter. Since 2006 the car has been stored Oct 1 through April 1 and since then has never been driven in the rain or snow. From 2000 until 2006 I lived in VA and was never been in snow. The car currently has 131,000. Out of all my vehicles this is by far my favorite and that is why I kept it. The new cars are nice but none have the timeless styling of the newer (98-01) face lift E38s. From the full leather dash to the attention to details, this car is IT! I am reluctant to repaint the roof as the car is otherwise 100% free of even the smallest scratch or dent and I like to keep it all original. It will be a big decision to paint the roof. I actually considered previously asking Doug if I wanted to interview my car, but figured it's better kept a secret now that these are beginning to rise in value. Only about 1,000 V12 E38s were brought to North America each year 98-01 and they are getting more difficult to find. I hope this is because of people realizing the rewards of this car and not because they are not worth fixing. I will keep this car as long as I can drive. I'll sell my 95 S600 (love it because it reminds me of old Mercedes quality)before I sell the BMW and I love that car almost as much.

My favorite was the 2001, I even thought about buying one a few years later at that time, because a used 2001 BMW 7 series costs around €3,000, which is not too expensive for such a beautiful car, and it still shows today. that it is still a timeless beautiful luxury car Unfortunately, the petrol consumption is too high, so it is not necessarily worth investing in, but the fact is that it is one of the best-designed BMWs ever, which is still a very nice-looking luxury car if it is in good condition.

The seats are actually not massing... they are called Active Seats. They move water between two pouches below your butt in order to replicate a slight moving of your spine in order to ease built up tension from sitting for long periods of time!

I once read that the A8 and the Phaeton were made in the same factory and shared the same critical dimensions. There biggest difference was that the A8 body shell was mostly aluminum while the Phaeton was mostly steel. Not surprisingly this added several hundred pounds to the car. There is a comment below raving about the trunk hinges which are nicely finished and are made of aluminum. A feature not discussed is that the hinge uses a 4 bar hinge which allows the trunk to be closed without taking any additional space out of the trunk. Many of today’s luxury cars use a single pivot hinge with large curved arms which do take a lot room in the trunk. Often these arms retract into hidden space which is actually lost during the design of the trunk. Years ago, many VW’s such as the Jetta used 4 bar hinges as they saved needed space. Oddly enough the 4 bar hinges are also used in European cabinet hinges for similar reasons. As you open the door, you’ll notice that the door moves out before it pivots which allows the panel doors to be hung closely together. A car with 4 bar hinges moves similarly as soon as you open the trunk. The trunk will rise about an inch to allow the forward edge of the trunk room to pivot without scraping the edge of the trunk lid. I have only known one person who bought a Phaeton. He was the president of Shell USA who wanted a luxury car but for security reasons was advised to avoid Mercedes and BMW’s. He enjoyed the Phaeton and could drive it in anonymity.
