Hey Doug! I can answer the question about that awkward gauge circle! In the N-Line Elantra, there's a COMICALLY oversized drive select button there. It's literally the size of that circle. In the N they moved the button and kept the panel for cost cutting presumably. You can see it in other people's reviews of the N-Line! Hope that helps!
@DougDeMuro2 жыл бұрын
According to Hyundai, it's the opposite. In the N-Line, they had an unused blank, so they repurposed it for the sport button. In this car, the sport buttons had a different spot so they went back to having a blank again. The "official" reasons for this bizarre panel are as I said in the video. Keep in mind all other Elantra models (aside from the N-Line) also have the same blank that this one does.

It's always interesting hearing different perspectives and priorities for interiors. Personally, I hate centre screens, the bigger and floatier the worse, so I'm glad to see the screen a reasonably small size here. My unrealistic hope is that now that we're switching to digital clusters, we'll just nix the centre screen and go back to clean, elegant interiors with physical buttons. Nav is better on cluster anyway, radio can be on the bottom of the cluster, pax doesn't need access anyway. Why do we need a gaudy centre screen?
@DougDeMuro2 жыл бұрын
We need a "gaudy" center screen because cars now have too many functions for everything to be integrated into buttons. Car enthusiasts say they want no screens, just buttons, but fail to take into account how many buttons would be required to control everything in a modern car -- blind spot monitoring, HUDs, lane keep assist, all the climate functions we now have, configurable interior lighting, dozens and dozens of settings. A car with no screen would look like an airline cockpit. Car enthusiasts usually respond to this by saying "Well I don't WANT all those features" and that's fine, but the general public does, and they buy way more cars than enthusiasts. People who want no screens and minimal equipment, there is something out there for you -- it's called a used car! :)

@@DougDeMuro To parry off of this, you don't see car enthusiasts going around with flip phones and bluetooth ear pieces like 2008, so what's the big deal about a screen to help simplify things? This circle next to the gauge cluster is actually not purely aesthetic. It's magnetic and you can put things there. Works nice with a magnetic phone holder.
@thetorquedork58572 жыл бұрын
Doug I always appreciate your insight. I own this car and have had it for about 2 months. One thing I would keep in mind this car is meant to cater to a different crowd. You give up some modern amenities to get more sportiness and rigidity. Comparing this to other cars standard commuters isn't really totally fair. Fun features like launch control, NGS, exhaust tone, LSD are game changers. Also the wheel hop goes away completely when you turn off stability control all the way. It does feel like the entire car is breaking haha. Thanks for all your hard work and insight.

I think I know what the circle to the left is actually for. It's intended for mounting a phone/display with a suction cup or 3m tape, and Hyundai can't come out and actually say it because of safety reasons. It's illegal to mount a phone to your windshield in many states, but this feature provides and alternative location that won't obstruct your view. I imagine the base Elentra will be commonly used for ride sharing, and in that case this makes a ton of sense. Its the perfect location for a phone in that application. It doesn't obstruct your view, it's out of view from the passengers, and its a nice large smooth surface for a suction cup.

I feel doug has really under valued this car. It's quick with 0-60 easily achievable in 4.9 seconds on the DCT. A very fun platform. Great at switching from commuter to track car. It has good cargo room and rear foot room. The only true knock to the car are the styling and the solid rear seats. Other than that, this car at its price is a heavy hitter that is hard competition for everything even remotely close to its sector.

@@vroomgc it definitely does fix it on the Veloster N.
