I'm in a very similar position. I constantly surprise myself with the sort of stuff I find (either actively or suggested to me) that I take a passing interest in, sometimes enough to follow long-term, sometimes only for a few weeks or months, only to replace it with some other similarly random channel. Haven't paid for TV for, well, ever really! (In a country with one of the highest TV subscription rates in the world - no idea if that's still the case). Did a year or two of Netflix, far more entertained by a small handful of channels on YT I follow religiously.

The cost of sending economic migrants to Rwanda would be nothing compared to the cost of housing, feeding, supporting and educating them in the U.K. over a very long period at the tax payers expense. No one in this political discussion seems to understand that having a welfare state and unfettered immigration/ migration, is not possible. For a welfare state to work it relies on having everyone contribute by paying taxes….it cannot and will not work if a large proportion of the beneficiaries of the welfare system have never contributed, and probably never will..

You pre-suppose that economic migrants never find work, pay tax or find other ways to make a contribution to society. Alongside that your talk of a “large proportion of beneficiaries” is not consistent with maximum numbers of 250k migrants p.a - less than a third of one percent of the total population of the UK. If you’re really interested in the health of the public purse and UK tax base my suggestion would be that you focus on offshore wealth rather than (as the Mail & Telegraph would prefer) migrants & benefits claimants.

Why are Brits more keen on Ukranian refugees. Well apart from the fact that the overwhelming majority of said Ukrainian refugees are women and children being an important fact. It's also hard not to compare the bravery of the Ukrainian people, whose men have stayed to fight for their country. It seems that, despite the numbers of Afghans fleeing their nation, men included, far outnumbering the Taliban, they were not prepared to stand and fight. Apparently it is OK for foreign soldiers to fight and die on their behalf, not so keen themselves. A far easier life to run away, looking to us to provide a new life.

While I somewhat agree with that (and I think other factors also apply), the fact is that Ukrainian men are prohibited by (martial?) law to flee the country and are forced stay and fight.

@@daniel.lopresti Maybe, although some seem willing, including certain numbers of women. But the fact is they are staying, fighting to secure the type of country they want to live in. Afghans didn't like life under the Taliban, were not keen on the Russians either for that matter. Then, when western powers came along, some, agreed to offer support, but others certainly did not. And yes, that is fair enough, we should never have thought to impose western values on a tribal, religious society. Yet, when we withdrew, allowing the Taliban a way to retake control, one again Afghans in their thousands wanted out. So I think it only fair to ask why are they not prepared to actually help fight for, and thus create a nation that they would wish to call home. It seems to me that, unlike the Ukrainians, they want an easy way out.

as for overwhelming majority of said Ukrainian refugees being women and children, hopefully you understand the moment the war is over these women and children will be joined by their male partners here, so you eventually get the whole family package anyway, more to follow. as for men fighting for their country, as others explained men age 18-60 are prohibited from leaving the country and have to fight. I am Slovakian and we have quite high number of Ukrainian male refugees here. Why? Because before the rule (prohibition of leaving Ukraine) was implemented, many many men expected this and fled the country right away. So much for fighting spirit. My message basically is - just do not idolize things, and if you do more research on Zelenskyy you find out he is far from an angel he has been paraded around.

@@christinerussell113 It had actually completely escaped me how the Afghan resistance against the Taliban collapsed almost immediately, and yes that does contrast sharply with the situation in Ukraine. I suppose it being a civil war (or a proxy war since one side was propped up by the West) makes a big difference, and possibly some Afghanis either were somewhat sympathetic to the Taliban, or even just didn't see any hope in resisting them. I think Zelensky's statesmanship and positive image has a huge effect on morale, as well as the desire to defend their nation from a foreign invader which they've seen encroaching more and more on their territory for many years now. I think any sense of national identity in Afghanistan (which I don't actually believe ever existed, due to its tribal divisions) certainly would've been all but destroyed at this point. As horrendous as the atrocities being committed by the Russians are, not only in Ukraine but also the suppression of expression/movement/etc within Russia, IMO it still doesn't compare with the brutality (particularly on women) of the Taliban, which might be another reason for families wanting to flee once and for all.

As a result of lockdown I lost my job, my mother didnt get terminal cancer treatement and i missed her last month, my grandfathers dementia got worse and killed him with him wanting to die all the way through, friendships have broken down and my cost of living and future outlook has got significantly worse. They seem to think being casual about these rules is fine. Its the principle. But they genuinely live in another world.

Apparently some Afghan refugees have refused the offer of a four-bedroom house because it is not in London. Many of these refugees have six or more children. Very few people in this country - especially in London or another large city which would be acceptable - could accommodate a family of that size.

He doesn't think Boris or Rishi should resign because it would put the country into turmoil? Suppose that this was an election year; would Murray say that the election should be postponed because a change of PM at this point would be detrimental to the interest of the UK? Or, suppose that this was an election year and being mindful of the public outrage at their hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness, they resigned in order to restore some credibility to the Tories in the eyes of the voters - would Murray's opinion remain the same with regard to the possible negative consequences of observing the Democratic process in the UK? Boris Johnson is fundamentally dishonest and untrustworthy. He lies practically every time he opens his mouth. He made his name as a journalist by making up stories. His campaign for Brexit was based on lies, had nothing to do with wanting to leave the EU and everything about him getting into no. 10. All of this was known yet in 2019 English voters gave him a thumping majority. He got Brexit done but it is too soon to say whether that works out for the better. It is not obvious how things have improved or what will be done differently. Free of the EU, we no longer apply public procurement rules to avoid governments handing contracts to their friends and sponsors. Had Trump been re-elected, he might have been rewarded with an FTA which Trump had indicated he would ‘cut’ for him. Of course that might still happen if both are elected again in 2024 and he will celebrate what the British call the ‘special’ (Batman Robin) relationship.

Ordinary (ex-Labour) voter here. I am supremely indifferent to 'Party-Gate'. What's important to me is maintaining British citizen-voter democracy over control by powerful foreign & domestic institutions; a rational economically literate approach to pandemic response (rather than panicked authoritarianism.) I also care about controlling mass immigration, not diluting the benefits and rights of 'Citizenship'; and NOT being forced to deny biological realities in the context women's sports and spaces. I also believe in pursuing a colour-blind society and NOT obsessing over a person's race - Labour now believe the opposite. In the face of those issues (and Labour's appalling positions on all of them) the nonsense of 'Party-Gate' is supremely unimportant to me.

On non-dom / green card issue, I am struck by contrast in the broadest sense, not detail, with Australia where the ATO Australian Tax Office collect tax on any income you earn - anywhere in the world. Even applies to UK occupational pensions - even though superannuation contributed under same terms in Oz is largely tax free. If it is a UK occupational pension simply treated by ATO as overseas income and taxed. Though a dual citizen, my UK bank like my Australian Bank has my ATO tax file number. Again - like tax not entirely the same - but a number of our politicians have been disqualified from sitting in Parliament when it was discovered they were dual citizens by birth and they had not renounced their UK, NZ citizenship even though they might have not been aware. Deputy Prime Minister had to resign, renounce and then get re-elected. Both tough rules - but straightforward.

I voted Conservative at the last election, very happy that Brexit was somewhat completed. However, while it's true that Labour campaigners have jumped on this, I am also furious about partygate. I was 100% behind advice and support, and 100% against sanctions and lockdowns. I am furious about that. To find out that the people who forced that upon us showed no regard to it makes my blood boil. If they were anyone else, regular civil servants, business people, normal voters - I wouldn't have a problem, but that they were from the government that forced it upon us is very different. I want BJ to resign. It is unfortunate timing, but when is a good time?

For once I disagree with Murray; just because something is legal, doesn’t make it right to participate in it. That being said, resignation from one’s political position is usually not the answer. Correction of one’s poor decision making, and changing of one’s behavior does more to help oneself and the country that that person is trying to help lead. Unfortunately, when one run’s for a political position, that person’s family members, and their activities do come under scrutiny. As well it should.

Christina, I can explain the Afghan vs Ukrainian refugee difference. Ukrainians are being invaded by a foreign nation. The majority of men are staying and fighting for their future. Most likely the Ukrainians will go home once the war is over. Ukraine is in Europe and we are relatively close geographically. Ukrainian culture is relatively western so integration is easier. Afghanistan have the government they have chosen i.e. they did not fight for a different outcome, even with all the assistance they had. They will not want to go home. They have much closer neighbours they can go to. They have a very different culture and will put more strain on the local British culture. Afghanistan is not at war.
