Douglas Ross slams Humza Yousaf in heated debate over the 'spiralling' cost of SNP unbuilt ferries

AT FMQ's today Douglas Ross took the SNP to task over the ongoing 'spiralling' costs to build vessels 801 and 802 at the Ferguson Marine shipyard.
Mr Ross quoted the Auditor General, who today said about the £300mSNP estimate to build vessels 801 and 802 : ' It would be folly to suggest that is a reliable figure that would be spent to deliver the vessels at this stage '

300 jobs saved at a cost of more than £300M so far. That's over £1,000,000 per job. While it's always sad when a business goes to the wall and people lose their jobs, imagine how many other jobs could have been created with this money, after paying a reasonable price for ferries from a competent shipbuilder. Nurses, doctors, police officers, care workers. There comes a time when you have to stop throwing good money after bad. If the SNP understood basic arithmetic, they'd know that.

I am mystified at the Ferry Saga. I am a ship repairer and ship builder. I have not seen the specs for these vessels, but by any standards, the time and cost overruns can only be put down to incompetence. What the public does not know is that the vessels lying afloat for so long are incurring maintenance issues on top of building issues that will call for additional survey and dry docking costs. These vessels will struggle to be fit for purpose and their operational life will likely be somewhat less than normal.
