I’ve already apologized to Art (who I consider a friend) for the "you got it" + pump fake chip toss a few seconds before mucking my cards. Although I was too tilted for any sort of rational thought by this point in the session and have never done anything like that in a poker hand in my life prior, there's no excuse that makes it okay. That combined with my aggressive whining in this hand, it’s just a bad look. I expect better of myself as someone who works hard to try to make the poker table a fun, parasite-free environment for all. For the keyboard warriors who are still deeply offended, Art texted me saying: “I don’t believe for one second you were intentionally trying to angle me.”

Doug when you were gone I played a crazy hand that I have to tell you about. I went to a casino (Stones) and fired up some 1/2 action. I bought in deep so that I can bully around the small stacks (because I saw a video on ICM which basically said to bully small stacks). I loaded up $400 and was ready to get my cookie jars out. The first hand I played I got 72. I decided to play it since I once saw you play this hand on PokerGo. As I called I said "if Doug Polk played 72, then it can't be that bad". Unfortunately for me the entire table heard me but I decided to play my hand anyway. The board came out AK5 all hearts. My 2 was a heart. I checked the raiser bet I called trying to hit a heart. The turn was a black 3. I checked, he also checked. The river was the 8 of diamonds. The pot is about $50 at this point, he has well over $400 and I have about $375 behind. Since I had the heart blocker, I decided to go all in. He tanked for 9 minutes then called with QJ of hearts. When you played 72 your bluff worked but every time I bluff with 72 they have the nuts. So my question is what did I do wrong? What should I do next time?

@@vishrantgoyal8225 the only ten he has is pocket tens and JTs and T9 which you bluff with at the end as x/r bluff to fold out overpairs. AT is probably the premier hand to bluff with. I also disagree with combinations doug uses to x/r bluff. The only hands folding to x/r bluffs are overpairs that art blocks. Hes better off bluffing hands like JTs and T9s. I dont agree with this bet by both opponents. For art even consider calling with Ace high he has to think Garret is 4bet bluffing hands like pocket 2s through 7s. So hes only getting value from Jack's which are definitely folding the turn because they block Garrets bluffs in the form of JT and T9.

Art is really smart to keep totally composed until his cards hit the muck. That little chip throw could easily caused him to lose composure, whether it was an angle or not (the way Garrett looked at art afterward looked like he was gauging his reaction)
@johneverett19483 жыл бұрын
Idk I think Garrett played it perfectly with the bet fold. AA would make a much better call IMO as his opponent might just fold KQ facing a 4 bet pre flop, so AA has much better removal considering his opponent is much more likely to continue with AQ. KK is certainly the bottom of Garrett’s value range so GTO seems to favor a fold as well
@emphyriohazzl15106 жыл бұрын
About which overpairs to call with, Doug forgets an important point : Art won't luff with a hand that blocks A5hh like AhKo. So AhAd or AhAs are also pretty good candiate for calling bcs the Ah doesn't block the bluff combos of Art (therefore making it more likely that he has a bluff) while the As or Ad blocks some of the suited AQ (making it less likely he has a value hand).

I'm confused. On the river it was discussed that your best call would be K♤K◇ because all combos of KQs are blocked. After this (around 19:10 or so), Doug then goes on to say he would fold his bad calls such as K♤K◇. Did I misunderstand something or did he confuse the suits and mean to suggest folding K♧K♡ due to not blocking and combos of KQs? Edit: Gave the explanation another listen. After he says " I will fold my particularly bad calls" he stutters before saying the suits. My live pro read suggests he said the wrong suits. 😀

We still have a strong range, even if it is a little capped, so it's not like we can't continue enough if he wants to start bluff raising more. If he wants to try to attack us every time we're capped, we going to realise pretty quickly and wreck him.

I don't understand why you suggest Garret should bet the river. Garret's range doesn't really have that many queens or 8s in his range, while this board smacks Art's range with a 2x4. It seems like betting this on the river is pretty just begs Art to shove bluff you with a huge portion of his range. Why not just check and take the pot rather than put yourself in what is almost certainly a difficult decision?
@dochmbi6 жыл бұрын
I think Art could definitely have 87s or 98s here too... I mean he 3-bet pre which he could do with those hands to balance out his valuerange and then called the 4-bet which he could do in order to have some suited connectors in that range too cause he wants to protect himself and not be capped to only overpairs on those middling boards.

Art has the best AK to bluff with too because he has no heart himself, therefore leaving only 1/3 of the AA/KK remaining containing no heart, so if Garrett randomises this way then he will fold those hands 2/3 of the time if Art just bluffs 7 AK combos, do you think this is that relevant of a factor?

Doug, always love your insight and recommend you and your content to every player who ever asks me about poker. Total respect. Question I have for you and anyone here is, based on a line of 4 bet/flat, check/check, check call smallish turn, check...what hands can Garrett expect to call for value on river? Seems to me based on that line both took, it’s a clear check back?? Art has to specifically have JJ or JT maybe where TT or KQs AQs seem to make more sense. Just not as many worse hands calling. Any insight appreciated as I see river as clear check back unless committed to calling check raise. And it’s UTG v SB...even more reason for check back IMHO

Doug, on Garrett's flop decision: you start by discussing potentially how many more QX Art has in his range than Garrett, but then advocate for Garrett to bet full range otf. Wouldn't it make more sense for him to check full range on a fairly dry board since he has less monsters, and then look to extract value mostly on turns and rivers?

Don’t agree Doug, Art almost never has a Queen here. The only hand Art plays like this are Q10, 1010, QQ and sometimes 88. We can discount Q9s,QJs,KJ,AQ. All these combos are likely c/r on the turn due to the flush draws/straight draws that exist combined with the fact that Art will be out of position on the river which makes it awakward when Garrett range is more weighted towards check downs river when he checks back on a paired flop. Art is also very likely to lead turn himself with a Queen sometimes as Garrett’s check back looks like a hand that has some value which is likely to call at least 1 bet. The problem for Garrett is what bluffs does Art have?
@danielracine19916 жыл бұрын
In the scenario, would it be recommending for Art to lead out, and at least double barrel, AK on that flopped board?
@adambreeden18675 жыл бұрын
A lead out would have been interesting. I personally would not lead out there, I just see too many guys willing to go broke with AA or KK, so the bet never works. If nothing else, AA or KK probably calls to see what you do on the turn.

A very long shot (I know this was 11 months ago) but yes. With his raise on the river, Art is mostly representing a queen. Since the Qc and Qh are on the board, the only two remaining queens are Qs and Qd. But, remember that Art also called a relatively large 4-bet pre-flop. Therefore, he is more likely to also have a suited hand, like KsQs or KdQd, or AQ suited (quite likely that he would just fold KQo to the 4-bet, not sure about AQo). Regardless, notice that Garrett is actually holding a pair of kings. From Garretts perspective, some of the more likely value hands that Art is representing are exactly KsQs and KdQd (Ace-queen put aside). But, if Garrett himself was holding the Ks and/or the Kd, that actually makes those hands impossible! Hence, from Garrett's perspective, having Ks/Kd would limit the number of (likely) value hands that Art can have in this spot, therefore making it more likely that Art is bluffing. That makes KsKd one of the better bluff-catchers in this spot (out of all combinations of KK), while KcKh is one of the worse ones (it doesn't block either KsQs or KdQd). That was what Doug was saying about blockers with KK in this spot. Garrett has KhKs which is something in between (blocks KsQs but not KdQd).

I really don't get why it's a clear value bet. Ace high very rarely calls this bet, the only hands that can call it and you beat - jacks, nines and AT, last one is kinda unlikely. Also, with the preflop action and action on the streets Garret's range is very small - trapping AQ, which is weird, KK, AA, QQ, rare TT and bluffs. Kinda hard to call with any of those hands in Art's shoes. Is there a flaw in my logics?

Doug with respect (I never commented to you prior) listening to your breakdown, it's just illogical in fairness IMO. You like the River bet BUT at the same time the river raise you like a lot too. So the issue is (as Garrett said basically) there was no reason to bet if you in NO WAY wanted to be raised; therefore, it was a better check back without exception. ALSO WHAT IS YOUR OPINION on what GARRETT did - "the "you got it" + pump fake chip toss a few seconds before mucking my cards". PLEASE ADVISE

That makes no sense. I get bc u can see the cards but listen to what you said. You're saying you should only bet rivers that you want to get raised? If that's the case you're missing all the value pros get that separate them from you. Art can call with AK for a chop, JJ, 99, A5s for a chop. If you never get bluffed on the river it means you're not getting enough value on the river. He also checked the flop so he was planning on only going for 2 streets of value. Either flop and turn them check or check bet bet, but only 1 street of value with KK is not optimal. Plus sometimes he will call here which doubles his profits for an extra $50k+. This is what you see alllllll day at $1/2- nobody going for enough value and basically everyone is even ev and just paying rake to play. More proof is why would Andy raise if this should only be a bet with a boat? It shouldn't so his bluff is a good play to mix with folding n slight occasional call. Bart Hanson has a lot of videos on thin river value and bet folding the river is most optimal or +ev. GMan says why didn't I just check in hindsite after he's raised of course, just like when someone bluffs and when called says why did I bluff??!!?? Does that mean he should never bluff? Of course not.

Fyi Garrett responded to the 'pump fake' it's on the top of comment list and he apologized to Andy and Andy responded he didn't think it was an angle, especially bc it's Garrett. He was "on tilt and didn't have any rational thoughts". You can kind of tell as soon as he did it he folded within 2 seconds realizing what he'd done, and anyone is sustable to mistakes in heat of the moment

Would have called myself because the re-raising in the beginning doesn't really support to logic of this play. Yes these pros are capable of anything, but most of the time the initial betting tells the story of the strength of a hand.

Doug, i absolutely love your vids! I can't help but feel you might call in this spot but I'm wondering if this is a situation where you should preplan what you are going to do prior to betting river? I think G he bets assumes he's good.. Then out of left field, the reraise.. I'm thinking tank/call..

Great video as always. May I ask what you don't like about ACR? Is there something not so legit about the site?
