I love the Heavy Duty Trash Bags, first time I used one was in Las Vegas at the Hagler vs Mugabi fight outdoor at Caesars Palace. It started pouring about hr before preliminary fights , Homeless folks were standing on sidewalk selling trash bags $10 EACH. They made a killing that night. Everyone all dressed up w their dates, getting soaked UNTIL they bought a trash bag, cut out a head hole & 2 arm holes. Lol. Now I carry two minimum in my backpack just in case anyone else needs one. Put a hat on, keep several tea lite candles that you lite under your legs while sitting against a tree. Especially in snow cold freezing weather. The trash bag keeps the heat in. Unbelievably warm all nite long. Thanks Doug ,, you are the Man !! Love your ideas. God Bless 🙏 you and all of us brother. Amen. Big Jim New Hampshire USA aka BOSTON STRONG

A net hammock does the same thing, lets you SLEEP and can feed you, if need be. I made mine out of a 50x10ft, 2" mesh monofilament gill net. I used wire pulling tape as the tree straps. If i only have one point of suspension, I make the hammock into a "sling chair". I toss a weighted line over a limb, tie both ends of the hammock off to the tree, building, boulder, etc. Then I sit in the hammock, with the buttpack under me. the day pack and a pile of brush are between my back and the tree trunk, letting me recline backwards. More brush is under my feet and lower legs, so I'm in a backwoods 'lazy-boy" recliner. I can roll up some debris in my shemagh, wrap it around my neck to hold up my head and go to sleep while reclining.

All good and simple stuff. The very minimum for me is a sit mat, though preferably half a roll mat, a poncho and a survival bag. I always have handwarmers and those heat.pads for aches and pains too. I've spoken about them before. Stick a few around the body, get under that poncho and it's hot in no time. As you'll know, candles are great too and if I'm expecting to be out I'll take a couple of uco tealight candle lanterns.. The survival bag is multipurpose, though a browse bag/seat is the idea in general. Horrible things to spend a night in.

This is almost never mentioned. I wish I could Remember, who to give credit to on this but I saw a video that changed my perspective on day, hike, survivability and in that video he promoted ground insulation by way of a sit pad. At that moment, I decided I would take it to another level and begin carrying an extra sleeping pad (in addition yo my small foam pad) which I had stored in my gear box. It weighs 19oz and my thoughts are that if I were ti be in a sick/stranded/injured/ lost scenario that You may need to lay down or just have extra warm space to get you and a companion possibly too. I really don't notice the extra pound and there is little bulk. Like I said above I also carry a small pad for daily/rapid use. Great advice from you on this life saving tip!

I've got a few of those fat round seats but never end up bringing them because of their bulk. I think I'll make one like is in this video. It's obviously way more practical and would be nice to have along especially when it's wet. Good tip!😊

I have a Nitehawk swivel seat/bucket in the bottom of my Bergen, It gives the pack a base and shape, keeps my hammock pod dry, and I have many other uses for it besides. If I stop I can just sit straight on the pack whilst I smoke/change socks or brew up.

I missed the first 10 minutes so I went back and re watched your vid Doug, actually several times. I've seen so many old pads at yard sales for couple dollars, I never thought of cutting them up to use this way. That's Excellent advice to us all, TY Doug !! Your vids are so informative. I also love your friend in back ground. Wow he's loud today. I thought they only hoot at nite, apparently not. Lol. He's really voicetrous today .. echos through the woods. Though I've been to a place in NH that I've been hooted at, and immediately I could tell it wasn't a real owl. I knew what it most likely was . Old SABAE, ( Sasquatch). They are known for that.. Stay Positive Stay Safe and Healthy my friend. Amen Big Jim New Hampshire USA aka BOSTON STRONG

I was talking so it was hard to tell what was going on. I think it might have been a yelling match between two owls. Maybe it was a territory thing, but I'm not sure. I thought it was funny though.

Hi Doug ☺ this is a great idea, I like the combination of seat pad and poncho, weighs lttle and keeps you dry and comfortable. You can always put those pads inside your clothes to keep heat in and stop wind chill, one at the font and back. Good to see you again, hope your doing ok, stay safe my friend, and may your God go whith you, Stuart UK.

This is a great idea. Especially cutting them so they fit in your pack as padding. I’m surprised some company hasn’t designed a pack with a removable back pad to use as a woods seat and make machine washing the pack easier too.
@DougShoeBushcraft Жыл бұрын
Yes. My thoughts exactly. Many backpacks these days have a padded back, but I can't remember any where the padding is removable. Some day packs have a compartment in the back. I think it's intended for a binder or 8 1/2 x 11 notebook, etc. But the cut-to-size pad fits well in that back pocket. It's not made for it though.
@RichardCooper-p7b11 ай бұрын
Many military packs do have a removable back pad you can remove to sit on.

Good video. Glad you gave a link for the poncho because I going to comment at the end of your video where did you get. It looks like a well made one. I've learned that if a person is unprepared or don't have certain items things that any kind of evergreen boughs and leaves a good way to get yourself off the ground to save heat. You at least want minimum about 3 inches of compressed natural materials under you for best insulation from the ground.

thank you. I've had good luck with the Arcturus ponchos. They are visible in a lot of my videos. My first one was a camo patern similar to USGI woodland

Hey Doug sorry I missed it .been sick lymes ripping me up .but anyway take you woobie cut a head hole and use it under your poncho like a match coat WARM .use potato chips bags on you feet or hands keeps them warm and they will sweat .use bread bags to keep your feet dry and warm use spray adhesive and a Walmart yoga mat cut to butt and knee size glue to pants

I agree. I demonstrated a poncho liner with a head hole in a video a couple years ago. I recently discovered Honcho makes a woobie with a hood. One is on the way. I plan to test it out and feature it on the channel.
