sodium carbonate is also available as arm&hammer "washing soda" in the laundry section of many stores near the borax and blueing, alternately it can be formed by heating sodium hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate) to over about 90c dry or wet. (actually decomposes at room temp but very slow(months-years) only seconds in boiling water, the resulting carbonate is heat stable to several hundred degrees.)
@michael32637 жыл бұрын
wolfedog99 I use the arm and hammer washing soda as a source of sodium carbonate as well. It works great for everything I've used it for thus far. And it is so easy to turn it into virtually pure NaOH. Every home chem lab should have some. 😀

This is just a suggestion from someone who doesn't know much chemistry, but I find that I have an increasing lexicon of chemicals that I know how to synthesize but not necessarily what I can do with them. If it isnt too difficult, maybe just telling us a few examples of what the particular thing you've synthesized can be used for would be helpful. Its kind of like programming, the more elements of an API you understand, what you can get done with it increases exponentially.

@johnlinley43757 жыл бұрын
It is, perhaps a silly question, but it has been more than thirty years, and you remind me of why I miss it so. Why is it para? Is it that the meta comes at a higher temperature, or some resonance effect, or are you getting a mixture, and just didn’t mention it?
@DougsLab7 жыл бұрын
Not a silly question at all! Para is favored in this case because of the ring activation effect of the methyl group, which is an electron donor and contributes electrons to the resonance via conjugation. This contorts the electron density of the ring to favor ortho- and para- species. Since there are two ortho- sites and one para- site one would expect more ortho- than para-. However, the steric bulk of the methyl group means that for sulfonation in particular, the para isomer is favored over all other outcomes by a huge margin. It is less stable next to the methyl group and will readily rearrange to the para- position at high temperatures. Had I used SO3 in H2SO4 and kept it cold, I could very well have had a significant percentage of the ortho- product.

@DougsLab7 жыл бұрын
At 3:38 I had already poured some but stuttered or messed up my narration so I had to start again! Good eye. At 9:45, since the toluene was wet it was better to add the acid to it rather than the other way around for the same reason you shouldn't add water to acid. It could have resulted in a lot of toluene vapor escaping the flask.

I've been wondering how to run a proper sulfonation fro a while now. Do you think this would work with naphthalene to yield naphthalene sulfonic acid?
@DougsLab7 жыл бұрын
Not really. If you're looking for 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, it's pretty simple. The high BP of naphthalene allows you to simply mix naphthalene with sulfuric acid and hold that at a little over 100C to continuously remove water. You literally just heat the two together for like 24h and allow steam to escape, then do an acid/base workup.

And what with this ~40ml of trapped Toluene in Dean-Stark apparatus? It just didn't react with H2SO4? Did you count it as a loss?
@DougsLab7 жыл бұрын
A large excess of toluene is always needed to drive the water removal mechanism. In this case, sulfuric acid was the limiting reagent by a large margin. However, the toluene in the dean-stark trap is clean and can be dried and reused for other experiments.

Used for thinning and cleaning certain industrial epoxies and paints as well as an octane rating booster in gasoline blends. chemically similar solvent to xylene but it evaporates faster. Also mix 1:1 with methyl ethyl ketone (acetone seems less effective) for one of the strongest solvents I have found for gunk and gum in the nooks of mechanical bits. (dried up bearing grease, gasket and sealant residue, stagnant fuel gums, sticker residue) Soaking parts in a metal or glass container with some agitation is fine but work fast with gloved hands, it has a fairly short breakthrough time on most glove materials including nitrile, which is not the case with either solvent neat. Also this only seems to work undiluted, adding any significant gasoline to stretch the volume (for soaking large parts) seems to destroy the effect and has only the solvency of basic gasoline.
@snowdaysrule7 жыл бұрын
wolfedog99 Will keep the 1:1 toluene/mek combo in mind when cleaning up the metal parts in small engine carburetors thanks!
@DougsLab7 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your purchase! Toluene has a lot of uses in the laboratory, and I think a gallon might not even be enough! It can be oxidized by permanganate to benzoic acid, or nitrated and diazotized to make lots of azo dye precursors. Nitrotoluenes can also be reduced easily to various toluidines, and a sandmeyer reaction can give halogenated toluene derivatives. It makes a great benzene substitute in a lot of old procedures which call for benzene, a great nonpolar blending solvent for TLC, the prime mover in a Dean-Stark setup, and all of this is barely scratching the surface. I'm excited for you. :D

Since you're using a Dean-Stark apparatus to drive the reaction, is it critical to use highly concentrated sulphuric acid or could it work with less concentrated sulphuric acid?
@DavidRobertsonUK6 жыл бұрын
Re the thiophene removal step: I found that just stirring magnetically with the sulphuric acid didn't efficiently sulphonate all of the thiophenes. After adding to a separatory funnel and shaking vigorously, the acid layer became very dark, and actually turned blue (?!). I had to discard the acid and repeat the acid washes 5 times until the acid layer was only a pale yellow colour.

@TheDuckofDoom.7 жыл бұрын
Fresh bamboo shoots have a fair amount of a compound that forms hydrogen cyanide in contact with stomach acid, mg per Kg of course but enough to be potential health concern under certain conditions. The compound decomposes at cooking temperatures.(near boiling for a couple minutes, not just warmed) Peach kernels(bitter almonds) are also known for cyanide.
@drinventions97427 жыл бұрын
Well the real question is,, can you separate the cyanide from mother solution of juice extracted from seeds or seed parts an other yielding plants to successfully dissolve Gold or would you even need to extract the cyanide out to do it.. I just think it would make very interesting video,,
@DougsLab7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could technically accomplish this. However, the yield would be too low to make it worth the effort. There are other, much easier ways to get cyanides from hardware store chemicals rather than hundreds of pounds of apple seeds and cherry pits.
