@Digital1115 жыл бұрын
@@karldelavigne8134 No they didn't there's plenty of journals and other documents showing 16 hours of work a day and all the grueling tasks. IT all comes down to supply and demand of jobs and workers. Back in the downton time, there was an oversupply of workers and not enough jobs so their employers could treat them like scum and the servants would have to suck it up. It's the same thing in our time as well, the more demand for workers there is in a town the higher the wages and the more appreciated the employees are. When there's too many people and not enough jobs companies treat the employees like crap and pay them pennies. On the show Downton you see eventually other jobs become available and the servants like their house becuase the long shifts and the pay were crap at Downton. One unnamed servant on the show leaves cause she gets the nights off at a shop while at Downton they were working till bedtime.
@karldelavigne81345 жыл бұрын
@@Digital111 Working long hours was the norm on farms, in factories, mines, etc. and you should not apply a modern perspective on this. Domestic servants had a far better lot than most of the working class: they were fed, clothed, accommodated in a salubrious environment, often got to travel, and were frequently looked after in illness. The evidence for this is more than just anecdotal and as I am personally familiar with many estates and know what happened in my father's generation, I know that the estates were essentially the forerunners of the welfare state.

Lisa Ellis, Can we PLEASE NOT trot out Diana as the example of perfection here? You know NOTHING! Diana was nothing like Cora. Diana, as a child was distressed about the breakup of her parents' marriage. BUT she was so jealous of her parents' love that she was furious and treated her mother badly because of her re-marriage. Diana was determined to stop her Father from marrying, so she systematically behaved so badly for her Nannies that they kept leaving their job. Keep that in mind- they were young women who left the Earl's employment WITHOUT REFERENCES and therefore little hope of another good job. The Earl wasn't about to write "This young woman was an excellent nanny but i leaving because my wo younger children have treated her so despicably. How do we Diana did this? She left a recording telling what she had dodne. Diana caused Charles' staff absolute misery. She continually took a dislike to any person who was close to her husband, or faithful to him, and had them dismissed. It caused real grief, and the disruption of family life for his staff. She also had his favourite dog put down. When Charles employed man who was HIV positive, as a valet, Diana freaked out and made Charles dismiss him. Yes, yes...... I know that you are going to say that she held the hand of an man with Aids. Yes, she did. It was all pre-planned, and organised by a group of Doctors who were looking for a way to break down the stigma of HIV. And the story that Charles never loved her and cheated her all along is a lie.

What Cora did to the Drews was absolutely inhumane. That's not how to deal with it. The show itself is full of contractions and nonsense. It seems odd that the dowagers deals with most of the problems involved with Mary and Edith. Cora doesn't seem to be motherly and why is it the dowager who talks Mary out of her grief and encourages her to reconcile with Edith? Cora who couldn't manage her daughters, didn't even have guts to tell the dowager when she stepped in the dowager's shoes as president.

This series is utopian. Men hardly ever mixed with women in these grand, aristocratic houses. Everyone had a way that was assigned to them around a house as grand as Highclere Castle, with rooms forbidden to be entered by certain members of a family, rooms solely designated for the men who decided what's what back in the day, men who inspired fear in the hearts of women, men whom women revered back then for fear of domestic violence, considering the fact that mental health services weren't very developed back then. The best treatment for depression in the 1920s that most adults gravitated towards was a bottle of brandy. Of course there was St Johns Wort, cocaine, morphine etc etc. The question at hand remains...what didn't they gravitate to? Prozac, because it wasn't invented, and flights to Bora Bora.
