For anyone who can relate to Edith, look how incredible her life eventually became. She became the owner of a highly respected news office and she eventually got her man. I know its only a fictional show, but its not so fictional to the point where these characters are not relatable in some way. This is one of the many reasons why I love Downton so much ❤️❤️❤️
@the8thchurch461
@the8thchurch461 2 жыл бұрын
Fictional doesn't even come into it. People actually draw inspiration from these type of dramas because the writers I believe, draw from real life people. That is how the shows become consumable. They wouldn't sell if they were pure fiction without any reality to them. This is why they sometimes get sued. Some say Downtown Abbey was based on Winston Churchill's mother. An American who came from a new money family and wasn't accepted by American high society. She infact came from the then excessively rich (but no longer) Vanderbilt family, rather like Julian Fellowess' new offering the Gilded age. I suspect the girl from the rich but new money Russell family will end marrying into the British aristocracy, just like lady Churchill.

There are at least two scenes that should be in this -- in S5E6, when Edith is about to receive the news of Michael Gregson's death, the family gives her virtually ZERO support, instead planning a picnic to watch a horse race. And, in S5E9, when Robert tells Edith that he's guessed the truth about Marigold; when Edith asks for Robert's forgiveness, he says "I need your forgiveness as much as you need mine." Also, there are numerous little moments in Season 1 where her elder relations, especially Cora, overlook or dismiss Edith.

I was just looking at the Series 1 script book, and Fellowes’s notes from that say that Robert and Cora did indeed expect Edith to never get married, all because they don’t consider her as pretty as Mary and Sybil. He then goes on to say how draining it is to live in a household where everyone thinks you’re a non-achiever. After reading that, my sympathy for Edith and my wanting to see her succeed beyond her wildest dreams went up tenfold. I also have to say that I have seen Edith’s haters call her all sorts of bad names: selfish, jealous, desperate. When I see them say those things, I really want to ask, “Are you honestly saying that if you lived in a household where nobody, including your parents, believed in you, the sibling they favored bullied you and never tried to understand you, and you were taught all your life that the only way to escape all of that is to get married, that you would not be envious, desperate, and more likely to be primarily concerned with watching your own back?” I think not. Side note: I actually have seen supplementary material that seems to indicate that Mary might have some envy towards Edith thanks to Edith not having as much pressure placed on her. I have to say I probably would be more sympathetic toward Mary if the show itself showed that she too had some envy toward Edith. Edith really strikes me as a character who the audience would have been more sympathetic toward if the show had taken more time to show how her being considered an under-achiever in her own family has shaped her as a person.

I have recently been rewatching the show and regarding her relationship with Mary in first season I would say that Mary mostly created her messes herself and receiving all the help she could ( the Pamuk thing of course and that time she decided to play with sir Anthony in front of Matthew for example) while spiting Edith just because she felt like it. While I do think that Edith was very wrong when she sent the letter to the ambassador I would say if she was treated that way all her life (like when she said to Cora when they returned after presenting Sybil in London that she never tells her she did well and receiving "you were very helpful" in return) it is not surprising. Wrong definitely but not surprising. Also, Cora saying that reminded me of my grandfather's joke "one of my daughters is beautiful, one - smart and the other hardworking". Though in his case it was only a joke and treated as a joke. I would say Edith matured the most over the series while Mary not so much. I mean even when Violet told Mary to make peace with her, Edith came herself. Great show. Love all the relationships shown. Sorry about language. I am not used to typing in English.
@the8thchurch461
@the8thchurch461 2 жыл бұрын
I love Edith of course and for a long time I didn't know what to think of Mary but I started to sympathize with her as well. The Pamuk thing actually when looked at closely, and all the other situations that Mary "created" for herself, were not really her creation at all! Mary was also a victim of circumstances. Think about it, her father literally created all the pains Mary had in her life by FORCING her to marry whomever became the heir! Her position as the oldest was her misfortune. The pressure to marry Matthew I believe, pushed her towards Mr. Pamuk. It was as though she wanted to show Matthew the type of man she prefers. To show him what the son of a god, Persus, looked like. Remember the story at the dining table where she implied that her father was sacrificing her by forcing her to marry the sea monster, Matthew? I felt for her from then on. This is what actually happens in super rich families. Its what happened to prince Charles as well as prince Andrew. Some might beg to differ. But when it comes to serving DYNASTIES, its akin to religion. The god of the dynasty has to be served at all cost. Imagine if prince Charles didn't have the pressure to marry a suitable woman for the position of the future queen. He would have married maybe Camilla or anyone of his fancy and poor Diana would have never come on the scene as the sacrificial lamb. People might feel like vomiting at the thought of feeling sorry for prince Andrew but had he married his real sweetheart, the American actress Koo Stark and not the "suitable" Duchess of York, the marriage would have lasted and Andrew would never have fallen prey to all that befell him. I believe rich dynasties are a tough act to follow and eat up their offspring without even caring about their welfare.

These clips do remind me on how much Edith was kind of set aside by her family. I mean, Edith is allegedly the 'plainest' of the 3 sisters, and she's the middle child too, completely 'forgotten' because she rarely gave trouble unless when she and Mary are at it. Sybil, while the sweetest, did stir up a bunch of drama by running off with Tom beside being active in politics giving her conservative parents some headache. While with Mary, it's all about getting her married off since she's the oldest. So Edith was easily 'forgotten' in the family. I'm glad that she finally meets her compatible partner and ends up at the 'higher' class compared to her family LOL.

I do believe parents love all their children equaly, they just dont like them all equaly. There are always people you get along better with, connect easier with, like more. The same is true for children. They are after all human beings, and not all human beings connect the same way. That being said I do speak about ''normal'' families. Not about abusive households or extreme situations. You can grow to hate your child or parents or loved ones if only terrible enough things happen. terrible enough betrayels and the like. But if nothing extreem happens like that, yes, parents love all their children equaly, but that doesnt mean they always get along with them equaly.

She was monstrous towards the drews so terribly selfish what she did was awful just breaking their hearts that way and shuffling Marigold around from here to there, also causing Mrs Drew a breakdown. Unforgivable behavior.

Nonsense. It was Mr. Drew’s mistake not to tell his wife. Everything else derived from that.

Wanting her child close and then stepping up to take her in despite the threat of a huge scandal that would have ruined her reputation and any chance to happiness shows a lot of character actually.

Edith legit ruined a lot of people’s lives. Mary was selfish but she didn’t ruin lives, well not as much as Edith lol

We’re you watching the same programme? Mary was a nasty bully! Outed Edith’s secret, that she was Marigolds mum before she had the chance to tell. She was always the least favourite from her family and had to accept and put up with Mary’s nasty comments ALL THE TIME. She did one bad thing - telling someone about the Pamouk guy, but other than that she was a Victim

@@amyminto3181 these are fictional characters. Anyways Edith ruined many the lives of the Swiss family, Edith ruined the lives of the drewe family and made them move off the estate, Edith ruined Mary’s life first by telling the scandal, edith asked if it was okay for a black man to be at downton.

@@KO-vv1ozEdith "ruined" lives for the sake of her child (except for the Pamuk thing, which she did as retaliation to her bully sister). Mary ruined lives whenever hers sucks at the moment. And when someone tries to ruin Mary's life (the hotel chambermaid, Edith, Vera Bates), the entire Crawley clan and her downstairs cheerleaders always have her back. Edith has no one.

Edith is the most self centered and selfish character in the series. 1. Writing to the ambassador could have implicated her own mother, sister, and staff member in an INTERNATIONAL scandal. 2. She had an affair with a TWO married men (I hope in the next movie Lizzy becomes lucid again. Wont that make a great story). 3. The Drew family. I could go on for a week in reguards to how MONSTROUS her actions were to the kids and Mrs. Drew. 4. Bertie. I believe she would have kept Marigold a secret until after the marriage when divorce would have been out of the question. 5. "My editor walked out" = "I fired him" in Edith-speak. 6. And of course who can forget: "what about my dress." This is silly but atleast I left you with a smile. Peace \o/

I 100% agree with you. The ambassador writing is without a doubt the most self centered thing she ever did. And the consequences of it followed Mary throughout the series. And I’m sorry the whole thing with the Drewes there were better ways she could have handled the entire situation. I don’t care how she felt about Mary, you don’t implicate her in a scandal like that. She should have worked something out with both of them. Also, she should have been honest with Bertie. No Mary should not have outed Her, but Edith should not have lied. Also, when Carson past out in Season 2 she was the only one concerned about her dress than the past out butler.
