This video was so helpful and educational! I recently rescued a 3.5 y/o Doberman who had all of the classic signs of hypothyroidism. She has been breed sadly and in her medical records had skin issues and began to gain weight over a year ago before she was in my care. She had been taken to several vets who were incredulous that such a young dog could have hypothyroidism, yet her skin issues persisted her appetite never improved and though she was put on a strict raw diet did not lose any weight! I found your video and found a fantastic vet willing to listen and she is improving! I love that you discuss which tests for proper diagnosis. Thank you 🙏

Thank you for this wonderful information. This lead me to order Dr Dodd's book to reference for testing.

This is so well said. My dog has been raw fed only with no synthetics since a puppy, no vaccines ever since he was a puppy, is never on any medications. But now that he is three I am doing a complete tests for him. I did cbc, chem, b12 cobalamin & folate, magnesium and vit D. Today we just sent off his serum to do a complete thyroid panel. Funny enough my vet actually recommended me to do the in-house one and I’m like no I want it sent out and get every single baseline I can possible get. Fingers crossed as everything previously came back WNL expect vitamin D which was slightly elevated at 444nmol/L with a range of 109-423 so I’m not too worried as vitD reference lvls are always disputed and with holistic vets they do think the base reference range is lower than wanted.

Thanks for the information - we have a 17 month old Welsh Terrier who bit our youngest child recently, requiring a hospital visit and stitches. I would say it was provoked (meaning he put his face near her face during meal time) We have the dog in the care of a behavior therapist/trainer to work on potential food aggression. Today I met them at our veterinarian's office for her vaccinations. She seemed nervous, growled at the vet tech and was absolutely crazy with aggression towards a puppy in the lobby. She has never behaved that way. never. ever. She loves dogs - all dogs. The trainer noticed a bald patch on her shoulder, which I'd never noticed before. The vet assumed it was a vaccine reaction - however it's been nearly a year since any vaccinations were given and I've never noticed that patch before. In my research I've found that the vaccine alopecia usually shows up 2-5 months after the dose, not 12 months. When working with the trainer today she growled and snapped - it just did not seem like my dog at all. I do not know if she's stressed being away from home and in a training program or if this could be a thyroid or other health issue. I was going ask for a blood workup to be done, using the tests you discussed in this video - but you mentioned not doing it until 6 weeks or so after a rabies vaccination, which she received today (the booster). When should we begin the test with her? Thank you very much.
