Where Gil stands out from the rest is his background: MD and PhD. I know qualifications aren't everything, but to do (and complete) an MD means you have some knowledge of medicine and to complete a PhD at a top medical school means you have advanced knowledge of a specific area or areas of medicine. It also, however, teaches you about academic research. Everything Berg and Gil knows comes from peer-reviewed publications and to get papers into top journals, as Gil has done, requires an understanding of all of the possible flaws - methodological, conceptual - that can corrupt a hypothesis. Berg, Saladino, Eckberg and others simply don't have the training or the expertise to deal with this level of science. They think scanning papers for outcome data makes them an expert. It doesn't: it makes them a reader. And the fact that Berg has just posted a 'reaction' video to Gil that contains even more errors says it all.

This is the one channel where I feel 100% certain there is no bias. I always have full respect for Gil’s conclusions and openness, even when it might conflict with my own gut feelings and ideology. People like Berg, Berry, Ekberg, Baker, Saladino et al are just all about the clicks and the money, so some of their advice will be ok short term and might bring them hundreds of anecdotal testimonials, but really they are just dressing up what people want to hear. Grifting basically! Keep on bringing it Gil, I’m sure one or two Berg worshippers will eventually have the spell broken!

Did you see Berry's silly video of himself ordering Quarter Pounders without buns at a McDonald's drive thru? At least he made the correct call in avoiding white bread. You will find little healthy food at any fast food restaurant. I think doctors pushing carnivore diets for anybody but the most severe IBS patients should be found guilty of malpractice. I don't even think it's good for short term weight loss as if people are going from eating junk food to eating lean red meat; it's really a low calorie diet in disguise. I read about a stubborn diabetic case where the woman had cut her carbs down to almost nothing, and there was no drop in her blood sugar, because the saturated fat she had replaced it with, had made her insulin resistance worse. Glucose and insulin, don't just go up when we eat a lot of carbs.

Dr.Berg started me on the low-carb way and it's worked very well for me and close people around me. That being said, you must NEVER take any youtuber/influencer claims at face value. Keep researching, keep studying, reading and THINK for yourself. That's why I enjoy this channel a lot too. For example, the "designing low-carb for heart health" video was very helpful and informative for me. I keep trying to tweak my personal keto/low-carb diet to align more and more with the evidence for good health. I find it interesting that the Mediterranean diet has a ton of similarity with a healthy keto one and eventually I will blend the two for the long term. Dr. Berg's diet also dismisses a lot of the foods that are associated with dirty and unhealthy keto. Would have been interesting to see Dr. Gil's take on that, although it's somewhat covered in the other videos covering the diets. Let's stop the tribalism and focus on critical thinking and communication! Anyway, thank you Dr. Gil for your and your team's work on this channel!

I don't think Dr. Berg means to deceive anyone. True, he does not have an MD in neuroscience and a PhD in biology, therefore he is far from being as educated as Dr. Carvalho. Dr Gill bases his output on the best scientific evidence on a particular subject. Unlike people like Mr Berg who has other priorities. He has a sales team. He needs to keep his followers tuning in to keep up the hit rate. His appeal is based on creating a story, ideally which includes controversy or disagreement with the generally accepted view. Nothing wrong with that if it is based on genuine contradictory evidence. A great deal wrong with that if it is based on disinformation and self promotion.

We need to discard some of the "messengers" and their "messages" by ruling them out based on their character. It's a shortcut. Should I really dig into the claims of someone who confuses serum cholesterol with dietary cholesterol, who presents autopsy data as applying to healthy humans? Best to just ignore the guy.

It is unfortunate that youtubers/influencers like Dr. Berg are much more popular than Dr. Carvalho. People tend to prefer the people that confirm their biases rather than those that challenge them. This phenomena is even more obvious in political/geopolitical influencers. Those who stick to facts and objectivity are boring and frequently ignored in favor of those who blatantly make up narratives that confirm their target audience's biases. Some channels even start out objective and factual and gradually move to sensationalism and "alternate facts" We need to support those who stick to their principles of honesty and not to those who sell out. I make a conscious decision to not click on videos of these youtubers regardless of their click bait titles and certainly would not subscribe to them.

Saturated fat is the root cause of insulin resistant cells in the first place, fatty acids that build up in the liver, the keto diet makes insulin sensitivity much worse. Berg is a Scientologist chiropractor, his claims on the keto diet were debunked by Australian academic researchers recently at RIMT university in Melbourne Australia, in fact the father of the original ketogenic diet Dr Robert Atkins blocked his own arteries by more than 70% his own friend performed the autopsy on him. The guy responds to a 2 year old video, then has his sales rep handle any fallout. Most of us don't get our nutrition advice from Chiropractors like Berg. He is no more qualified to review scientific studies than any one of us. Calling yourself "Dr" far outside of one's expertise is disingenuous. When someone asks "Is there a doctor here?" They aren't hoping for a Chiropractor.

Good vid doc. While TC is a rough estimate of CVD risk, it's very unlikely one has a high TC and low Apo-B levels. However, one can have "good" TC and less then optimal Apo-B levels, which is one reason TC is a rough correlate to CVD at best. LDL-c is better correlate, still not as good as Apo-B, and yet most med pros still focused on LDL-c unfortunately.
@garyduetix11 ай бұрын

@lennasser219810 ай бұрын
There is an important thing to keep in mind regarding LDL. Dr. Gill is right that the number of particles is what’s important, not the size of those particles. However, the same number of particles of large LDL will give you a higher LDL score than the same numbers of smaller LDL, sine the LDL score is based on total volume. Therefore, when people look at their blood test results, the LDL doesn’t tell the whole story. They have to know the number of particles, and as Dr. Gil says, the best marker would be ApoB, not simply LDL.

One thing Eric Berg said in another video that has made me concerned about reheating food in the microwave. He claims food loses nutrition when reheated in the microwave than if you reheat on a stove/in an oven. (Going by memory here so could be wrong). I use a microwave at work since there is no other choice. Dunno if there are studies comparing microwaves with stoves/ovens for reheating leftover food or frozen food.

It's been a long time since I've looked it up, but I could swear the FDA has tables online that list foods' nutrients by cooking method. ETA: it was the USDA and the example did I looked up didn't have a separate microwave listing. Pubmed does have some studies listed. The first one that came up in my search didn't find significant differences, according to the abstract.
