Mike O'Hearn and Dr. Gabrielle Lyon believe red meat is important for long term health - and worry about the current generation being raised on less protein.
Compared to previous decades, non-meat diet culture is more popular than ever before. Whether it is due to moral, climate, or simply health reasons - many people are abandoning red meat from their diet (and even other meat-based proteins). Mike O'Hearn believes this is the wrong direction and has always considered red meat a super food. O'Hearn is obsessed with longevity in health in fitness - so his support of red meat is shocking in modern contexts considering that even Arnold Schwarzenegger has left red meat behind.
That's why this week O'Hearn brought in an expert to help back up his support of a red meat diet. In Generation Iron and Barbend's latest episode of The Mike O'Hearn Show, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon discusses the studies behind red meat and why it's important for long term health - not a detriment.
Bodybuilding, fitness, weight training - all on the Generation Iron Fitness Network!

Its not about trying to look young, fit, strong and muscular. Bodybuilding is a young man's sport. Its about maintaining a functional body that is full of energy that last well and truly into your 70s, 80s and 90s. Lifting weights, especially very heavy weights, I will quote John Grimek, his biggest regret was training too heavy for too long and he suffered badly with arthritis in his 70s and 80s, he did not make 90. The body was not designed to lift heavy weight for 40 or 50 years.

I don't know about you all, but I weigh 184 lbs and find it very challenging to eat 184 grams of protein per day. Knowing 4 oz of chicken is roughly 20 grams of protein, red meat and salmon is a bit more like 60 grams. I find I have to add protein shakes to get close to 184 grams but I find it very difficult. How do you do it?

1g of protein per lb is ideal but not needed. If you were getting around 150g or so you’d be getting in plenty granted your eating enough carbs and fats. Aka your total daily calories are fitting your needs

I agree with the above comment you can probably even go as low as 125 grams of protein i used to do 1 gram per pound and was constantly gassy and using the bathroom way too much I am 245 lbs at around 12 percent bodyfat and usually get 180 to 200 grams per day through meats, eggs, and two protein shakes, my fats come from my olive oil i cook my chicken breasts in, my lean ground beef, eggs, and occasional peanut butter my carbs are usually anywhere from 150 grams a day to 200 whem years ago i was doing as much as 500 to 600 grams of carbs per day just tweek little things here and there and check your body every month as far as weight but more importantly through how you look I dont rely on the scale as much as usual, but I look at how I look and how I feel am i sore all the time ??? If so I check my protein intake maybe i will up it 20 to 50 more grams a day I know this is alot of info but I hope it helps its been trial and error for me I have trained for 16 years

She says @ 23:00 Fats being a superfood her response was " I don't necessarily believe that to be true, um Protein is the ultimate paramount to survival. Essential fatty acids you don't need that many uh in terms of it being a superfood I would very hesitant be hesitant to say that is true, I personally don't have any input on that because I don't necessarily believe it"... She answer the question even though she admits she has no input on it.

No your instincts were and are right and I'm glad you listened. Red meat heals and makes us stronger. They encourage veganism to make us sick, sick so we go to the average doctor. Doctors are just pill pushers paid by Big Pharma and they are taught almost zero nutrition in med school. Eating a Carnivore diet is how humans evolved for the past 4 and a half MILLION years. Continue eating meat. I do it and it the word needs to spread. You are living proof it works. 💪🏽

I don't know why people don't think diet is not versatile, just like a natropath well prescribed different herbs and a docter well peacribe different medicine the diet depends on what you need (genetics) what your doing (exercise) and your environment. Ranging from heavier dense foods such as meats organs bones for sick the muscular etc and to a lighter diet ranging to chicken then to fish and then to liquids such as blood and juices for people who are light energetic may be extremely health, may be doing yoga and meditation etc

Somebody intelligent in the left hemisphere of the brain only, may understand health but may not be able to execute a fit and healthy lifestyle or at least to the degree as somebody who is advanced in the right hemisphere of the brain. As the right hemisphere of the brain includes different forms of intelligence relating to sensitivities such as creativity, emotion, phycologically and intuition

I feel bad for this chick because you can tell she’s been basically a 10 her whole adult life but now the age is fighting back and winning, women try so hard to fight it and it works for a bit but then the age really starts to show in their neck and once that happens it’s all down hill, this is why it’s extremely important not to worship your appearance because it will come back and rip you to shreds mentally if you allow it to, hopefully she can accept her old age and learn to be happy as an average looking women
