Stan Efferding & Mike O'Hearn want you to stop making cardio a religion.
Cardio sucks. Everyone knows it - and it's particularly a thorn in the side of strength athletes and bodybuilders. However, the benefits of cardio for heart health and endurance are well known. As the fitness industry continues to grow in the mainstream - cardio has become a must-do activity for athletes and the regular person. In fact, it's not uncommon to be guilted for not including cardio into your lifestyle - at risk of your life longevity. While cardio certainly has wonderful benefits, Mike O'Hearn believes many athletes are actually hurting their fitness goals with too much cardio. Pro bodybuilder and powerlifting legend Stan Efferding agrees. In Generation Iron and Barbend's latest episode of the Mike O'Hearn Show, Stan Efferding explains how most fit individuals are doing way too much cardio.
Bodybuilding, fitness, weight training - all on the Generation Iron Fitness Network!

As a semi pro bike racer, I do 2-5 hours of cardio per day depending on the time of year. I also do 1 hour of weight training 4 days a week. I'm also 47 years old. Averaging 15-20 hours a week of exercise. I do it because I like to. Being in shape and looking like you're in shape are 2 different things.

this. Whatever industry preaches , comes out as fake in the end. As my age goes up , cardio becomes so good, so pleasant , sleep is so much better, no muscle aches from broken muscle fiber.. whatever it might be - swimming , running , biking , literally anything i can do for 1 hour , it feels great. I will never go below 30 pushups , 50 bodysquats and 15 pullups. This is my strength check.

Indeed. I weigh almost 240lbs at 6ft2, but I can run 2 miles easily and I take the stairs at my job all day. If you have a bodybuilder's physique and you can't perform basic cardiovascular exercises like 20 burpees or run a mile, you are not fit.

Doing performance based cardio like sprinting actually helps make you a stronger lifter. Builds fast twitch, explosive power, and work capacity. Aside from sprints 2-3x per week just doing regular walking daily is great for you. It doesn't trigger a catabolic response in the body, lowers cortisol, and helps speed up recovery.

Easy to say when you have the genetics to be lean. I get fat just breathing air. My diet is spot on, but my body wants to store fat regardless. My two hours of cardio per day on top of training is what keeps me in shape. I've been training for 22 years and learned the hard way that the only way for me to stay in shape is with all this cardio. Everyone's body is different and some have to work harder than others. That's life.
@davepazz580
@davepazz580 Жыл бұрын
I used to be the same during my bodybuilding years... I could put on muscle and body fat fairly easily and if I stopped doing any cardio work for any reason (or if I stopped working out altogether), my weight would creep up pretty quickly. And if I wanted to get really lean for summer? That meant a fairly strict diet plus 5 days of cardio a week (anything less and I wouldn't be able to make it)... Then some years later, I just stopped lifting weights entirely (got burned out by bodybuilding after so many years) and started doing calisthenics only a few times a week as my only form of exercise (I decided to stop doing any cardio whatsoever)... After a few months of this, I noticed to my big surprise that I actually became the *leanest* I'd ever been in my life, and all this without any real effort on my part (as opposed to how I had to go about it before)... all I was doing was trying to constantly improve my pull-ups, push-ups, dips and bodyweight squats and it felt as if my body no longer "welcomed" body fat accumulation as it used to. As much as people emphasize how vital cardio work is for getting lean, it wasn't until a stepped away from the typical weights + cardio paradigm that I realized it is actually possible to become lean (and do so more efficiently) than just the accepted "traditional" spending 40-60 min. on some cardio machine a few times a week.

In HS I wrestled on a team with a few genetic outliers. I was blessed with great strength. I did 28 pull ups and set the record without much effort. Another teammate had insane cardio without training. He smoked a pack of cigarettes daily, skipped runs after practice, and still ran a 5:30 mile. He never gassed out. I could run a 6 minute mile but had to work hard to get there, no smoking, ran 5 days per week and still didn't have the cardio of my smoker friend. People underestimate genetics.

I agree 100% ! Cardio is only as essential as to how much you eat or how much you lift depending on your goals. I have had high blood pressure, It is hereditary, bloodwork tested perfect and doctor was scratching his head. Cardio just isnt always the answer. I believe Moderate cardio may be helpful if you dont lift other wise. High intensity weight training and calories in and calories out are more important than slapping un-nesessary cardio,I just fade away, arms and legs get skinny and heart beats too fast... Less muscle burns less calories. Calories are for longevity. Blood pressure can just have a mind of its own if it is hereditary. I just lift intensely eat right and that works best for me as a natty .I also found that if I mix in multiple reps of 20 helps with endurance and that really works for me ;) Un-nesessary outside stress is what can really negatively go against your health and you need to get proper sleep or else our body can go against you. John Cena doesn't do cardio either and he was said to be one of the fittest athletes on the planet.

I've always sworn some heavy deadlifts or squats will give you more intense cardio than running a mile! I'm sure there's some differences in training the endurance of the muscles when running that you won't get from squats potentially BUT, and it's a big but, if you squat 4 sets of 10 somewhere around 75-80% of your 1 rep max your heart is going to be pumping HARD! And you'll be super out of breath 🫁 especially if you push your rest time down to 1.5 minutes or so. Most people including myself just don't have the will power or want to run hard enough and long enough to get that same heart rate and breathing elevation. Running feels like you're breaking the body down rather than building it up to me. A really good cardio device is the rowing machine, if you want some good resistance/cardio a rowing machine is maybe the best. The resistance is directly dependant on how hard you pull with your arms and push with your legs. You can literally get a bicep and back pump alongside a leg pump all while getting your heart rate super high and breathing heavily and it happens pretty quickly. A 2000 meter row as hard as you can will kick most people's asses.

MY CARDIO IS 20 MINS OF BIKE ON TUESDAY..WHEN I WEIGHT TRAIN THATS MY CARDIO TOO..I ONLY REST 30 SECONDS TO A MINUTE BETWEEN SETS..SAUNA 30 MINS A DAY FOR 5 DAYS IS MY OTHER CARDIO..ANYTHING THAT RAISES YOUR HEART RATE IS CARDIO

The thing I never got is isn't doing a high intensity lifting session is basically a form of cardio? The heart rate is up throughout the entire session so wouldn't you get the same cardiovascular benefits or is the continuous motion of the running, swimming, biking, etc make the difference in the conventional thoughts on this.

It has a lot to do with the individuals DNA. This is why it’s important to understand one’s individual genetics to reach one’s best health, fitness and athletic performance. It’s always going to be a debate because things like cardio all work differently for everyone. However, when you understand yourDNA - you will have a much better understanding as to what is best

When I was in I would tell my guys they should train like a triathlete. Must be able to lift a lot, run a lot, and walk long distances with a heavy load. Just lifting won’t get you all that. Best way to look at it is by seeing all these bodybuilders dropping dead. When do you see triathletes, cross fitters, or anyone else that does high amounts of cardio just drop dead

They are not to depend,but use me as a tool until they do not need! Does no good to waste money unless they are mega millionaire and dont care,but if that's the case regardless they will improve and sustain with massage!

Diet is the cardio ! I only run few times a week to keep my legs pumped in between the days I train them . I power wash houses decks and commercial properties every day . That's my cardio and sweat lol I am 6 3 slim build . My upper body grows over night , can only train one part a week . My legs I have do 3 times a week . If I miss a week they lose over night . Just genetics. The great Dallas macarver once said , stop using genetics as a crutch , how do you know your true genetic potential if you haven't even put in the work .❤️

Guys its nuanced: Its the f.i.t.(frequency, intensity and time) that will create a sufficient stimulus if energy is available for recovery all depending of your short, medium and long term objective (general health vs difference types of performance). Ok second thing...Ken doll guy is a bit clueless about scientific research...he's the guy that looks great (tippy top genes for esthetics/ power...maybe supplements) and feels that makes him a physiology expert... Cardio is a very large type of activities.... But ty Ken for the podcast...great info

Most people believe in cardio because of propaganda. It came from a doctor back in the 1960's named Ken Cooper who wrote a book about aerobics. His team figured out that if you exercised between 65-80 percent of your maximum heart rate, you would burn the maximum amount of fat calories per minute of exercise. His ideas started the jogging craze of the 1970's, and fitness centers with their treadmills, lifecycles, and stairmasters soon followed based on his research. The problem with Dr Cooper's idea was it was based on how much fat calories you burn while exercising. This is not what really matters. What really matters is exercising in a fashion that causes your body to get fitter. Aerobic, or cardiovascular exercise, although certainly not bad most of the time is not intense enough to improve your fitness very quickly. The whole point of exercise is to force your body to get fit quicker, because we evolved to improve our fitness rapidly if we exercise intensely. We actually accomplish getting fitter when we rest and sleep, not during the exercise. Sure, cardio will get you fit a little bit, and burn some fat, but doing it endlessly just puts pressure on your body you don't need. Cardio is just fine, but if you want to get fit quick, you need to sprint and lift weights intensely, and not too much. Evolution proves this.

Lately Hathor Bjorensen has benefitted greatly from cardio intensive workouts, and it has probably saved his life. Anyone using PED's has to factor in their sport, age, intensity, diet and health; at some point you can't deadlift 1k pounds anymore and you have to adapt to your body breaking down. If you're consuming more than 6k calories a day to be strong in your 50's for over 30 years you might be killing yourself slowly. Most runners consume less calories and can balance themselves throughout multiple athletic endeavors, where lifting heavy and looking like a Mr. Olympian demands too much on the body over time. Cardio is the answer to problems associated with lifting heavy for long periods.

Some jobs force you to do cardio, like a mail man that walks. Does the study take that into account when it suggest you don't need cardio. Officially they didn't do cardio but they really do.
