Doctor Hazel Claire Weekes MBE was an Australian general practitioner and health writer; she also had an early career as a research scientist working in the field of comparative reproduction. Doctor Weekes is considered by many as the pioneer of modern anxiety treatment and has written several books on dealing with anxiety disorders. Many of today's self-help books on anxiety continue to cite her work.
👉Born
Hazel Claire Weekes
11 April 1903
Died
June 2, 1990 (aged 87)
Education
University of Sydney
Occupation
General practitioner and health writer
Known for
Hope and Help for Your Nerves
👉Weekes found that many of her patients suffered from various anxiety disorders, such as agoraphobia, panic attacks, phobias, generalised anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In her books, she chose to avoid the term "nervous breakdown", as much as possible, as she considered the term vague, unscientific and unnecessarily alarming. Weekes also avoided the term "Anxiety State" as she felt it was too "medical", so she replaced both terms with "Nervous Illness" instead.
Weekes was concerned with the severe long-term effects anxiety and panic disorders had on the lives of her patients as well as the high failure of typical psychiatric treatments, especially psychoanalysis, which many sufferers had tried. Instead, Weekes developed her own unique treatment program. She noted that patients did not suffer from anxiety problems because they had flawed personalities or traumatic childhoods; rather, the problems were caused by the patient having a habit of fear-avoidance, made worse, or caused, by a very responsive "sensitized" nervous system. She was critical both of Freudian approaches and of attempts by behaviorists to "desensitize" their patients using relaxation and breathing techniques
Weekes described in her books the three main pitfalls that lead to Nervous Illness. They are sensitization, bewilderment and fear. She explained that so much nervous illness is no more than severe sensitization kept alive by bewilderment and fear.[5] Dr. Weekes analyzed fear as two separate fears; the first fear and the second fear. She explained that first fear is the fear that comes reflexively, almost automatically. The patient usually immediately recoils from it, and as he/she does, he/she adds a second fear to the first. Second fear is the fear the patient adds to the first fear. Examples of second fear are "Oh, my goodness! Here it is again! I can't stand it!". It is the second fear that is keeping the first fear alive, keeping the sufferer sensitized and keeping them nervously ill.
Weekes initially used the program on her own patients and then, as word spread of its success, it was issued on records and cassette tapes. Eventually, she developed a self-help pack consisting of a book and tape, with Weekes guiding patients through the program. She has summarized this program as follows; facing the feared situation, accepting the feeling of panic, floating through it, and letting time pass.
👉In 1983, Dr. Weekes was interviewed in a series of six talks, called Peace From Nervous Suffering, TV program Pebble Mill at One, in which she explained her techniques. A transcription of these talks along with two BBC radio interviews and two interviews at White Plains Hospital in New York, were published in her final book The Latest Help for Your Nerves.
In all five of her books Her work was marked by the personal nature of her approach. Early in her career she had earned both a Doctorate of Science as well as an M.D.
Weekes described her own battle with nervous illness in her final book in which she explained how she began suffering from anxiety. At the age of 26, she was misdiagnosed with Tuberculosis which caused her to become anxious and introverted. Weekes' anxiety lasted for two years and gave her valuable insight into nervous illness.[8] Dr. Robert L. Dupont describes in his book The Anxiety Cure (1998) that in 1983, he asked Weekes if she had ever had panic disorder. She replied "Yes, I have had what you call panic attacks. In fact, I still have them. Sometimes they wake me at night." Dr. DuPont responded by saying he was sorry to hear that. He described Claire Weekes as looking at him in shock, and she responded "Save your sympathy for someone else. I don't need it or want it. What you call a panic attack is merely a few normal chemicals that are temporarily out of place in my brain. It is of no significance whatsoever to me!"
Today, many doctors may be unaware of her books, but they are still in print and her work is promoted by an organization in Australia set up by her heirs. Over six decades, Dr. Weekes' first three books have brought life-changing relief to hundreds of thousands of people suffering from anxiety and panic disorders around the world. Although Doctor Weekes has been deceased since 1990, at least half of Amazon.com's customer reviews state that one of her books "saved my life"

Practicing this right now with anxiety at 100 on a scale of 1-10. Feel like I could jump out of my skin, fear losing it or going crazy the adrenaline is pumping so much. Loosening and accepting even though I’m shaking and wanting to cry. I’m a fifty year old man feeling like a three year old in terror. Jesus have mercy on me and all going through this.

My Queen! Had her first book in the 80's. I carried it everywhere I went. Kept it in my purse. It was my bible. I would pull it out and read what I needed over and over again in waiting rooms, car and home. So many underlined sentences and dog eared corners. I used it so much the front and back covers fell off. Over 30 years later, she is still my hero ~

Hello there, i feel so blessed to have read your post just now! Please get in touch with me if you could, your post is exactly described my symptoms! Up to the one thing you talk about feeling minutes of feeling normal and then go back to feeling terrible! I really thought I was possessed by evil. I am also phobic about food, I lost a lot of weight at the beginning but I started forcing myself to eat and little by little I have gain most of weight back. I am 70 years old and this is my second bout with this terrible anxiety. I went through it when I was 30 years old back in the 80’s but was able to recover fully and completely! But 23 years Sh’s I was in a bad car accident and my anxiety started creeping back into my life in small twitches. But I didn’t pay much attention because it had not sensitized me in my head. And I forgot the tools I had learned back then. Last year 2023 I went through a lot of personal grief and loss. And the anxiety came back with the vengeance. I wasn’t able to cook either because the small of food made me nauseous. Please write to me at evatempleton1913@gmail.com and if you would like my phone number so we can chat I give it you. We can help each other to recovery. God bless you.

I had almost 36 hours panic free but not slept well. Second morning my panic was back by lunchtime. What a blow! Yep you just have to pick yourself up and know you will get there again. I can't cook when I'm like this. The smell of the food makes me retch. Food has became a phobia with me. Another thing I have noticed is how you can switch on and off in seconds. It's odd but this is how I am. Anyone else feel that? When you glimpse at normal again for just a few seconds you wonder what the hell's going on with you?!!!! It's like a possesion. Obviously I must be patient on a setback but it knocks your confidence so much. 😢 I feel for each and every one of your with this condition. I think the sigma surrounding it doesn't help as you feel guilty as others are going through real trauma and this is more an imaginary disorder.

I can totally identify with your experience of the anxiety switching on and off. There are times, albeit not often at this stage in my recovery when I can totally get it. The acceptance, the understanding my anxiety is simply thoughts and feelings, the calm body and mind. I think....yes, at last, maybe I'm over this. Then, later its back. Nothing has changed yo bringbit back, but it's back. 36 hours free of panic must've been a good feeling. I remind myself that within me there must be the capacity to turn the anxiety of because I can have moments when I do. I do hope your periods of calm get longer and longer

yes, it is very difficult to bear, but, persevere with this woman's teachings, just keep going over and over again and again, and eventually it eases, it is possible to feel and think better, but it does take lots of practice, I remember being almost in despair reading her book when she said that in time I would welcome the challenge to actually have a panicky episode, however, I did get to that stage with practice where it was was so rewarding to welcome it and overcome it, and the best thing is that you can use these methods whenever you need to, as you gain more understanding of what she is actually saying, my heart goes out to anyone suffering from this condition,

@@meganfox9744 Try this: use emotion, get angry at your anxiety, tell your anxiety that you want more and more anxiety, feel the anger in your body. Stop the "oh my God I'm dying" thoughts, replace it with "I want more and more anxiety NOW!" Keep repeating yourself that you want more and more anxiety, Using anger is a way of replacing anxiety since humans can't actually feel two feelings at the same time, and it's also a way of getting courage. That'd be an extreme form of acceptance. Being OPEN and WILLING to feel the fear. Try it sometime, just as an experiment and see how it goes.

Been battling with anxiety and major depression since last June, 2022... Found this method through DARE. It has helped me through the worst of anxiety but I constantly find myself in setbacks and in return the depression flares up again. I am so so tired and it feels like it's never gonna end.

Maybe you should consider taking an antidepressant, just the smallest dose to lift your mood and practice acceptance for your anxiety. I have read "self help for your nerves" which she wrote in the 60's and I remember that she did not advise against taking an antidepressant. Wish you the best.

I get chest, back and arm pains and have had them for years and always believed it was some form of musculoskeletal issue. After a bunch of tests my doctor put it down to anxiety / tension. I didn’t believe him at first but then when I did a lot of work on my anxiety (including Claire weekes) I found that the pain subsided as my anxiety got better. So now I’m convinced it was pain caused by muscle tension caused by anxiety. Incredibly the amount of havoc anxiety can wreak on your body.

What is second fear
@JhayMonteroVideos
@JhayMonteroVideos 3 ай бұрын
Resistance you made..
@lars5288
@lars5288 3 ай бұрын
The first "fear" is feeling a body sensation (like feeling dizzy, feeling your heart race or such things) and/or a full grown physical panic attack that appear suddenly without cause. When experiencing this one should do nothing about it and just continue what you were doing or do nothing at all if possible. The second "fear" is anything you "think" when you experience the above. Like when your heart races you could think "there's something wrong, i might get a heart attack, i will die etc.". Second fear in general is every fearful thought or assumption you think without the body sensations mentioned above, like when you don't go outside because it could happen again to have panic. The principle is simple and effective, when you feel anxious or a real physical panic attack, then don't add thoughts to it. Like when you feel panic or fear, just let it happen. See, the body sensations are more or less the same when riding in a real roller coaster. People feel racing heart, nausea, fear, dizziness, sweating, breathing differently, and so on. They enjoy the ride because they have no second fear/thoughts. They are confident this is a fun and they will go through it safely. The same you can do when feeling fear, anxious or panic. It will not make the physical body reaction disappear, but it will make them shorter. Just ride/float with the panic. It will go away, like any roller coaster ride will end. Only if you don't leave the coaster/make additional fearful thoughts on top again and again, the body sensations of panic will last longer. Be courageous, when you are in a fearful moment or stressed, remember the body sensations are just normal and you don't need to add thoughts on top of these or analyze the body feeling. Just let it happen. The stress comes from thinking and analyzing, that is the root of panic disorder. No thinking about it is the key. Like people in a coaster don't analyze their body, they know it's part of the ride and inevitable. So are the feelings during a panic attack. What makes these feelings hard to deal with is the second fear, that what you think about feeling it, even though you know it's a normal body reaction to fear, anxiety or stress.

It's not outdated. Like she said it, it is only at the beginning of therapy and just if your psychologist or psychiatrist supports it. She didn't say it is needed. More important is to have a little snack with you, because panic attacks or fear take a lot of energy, so it can help you to have something with sugar during panic moments. And if you look at modern therapy, they either work with diazepam's (but only very short) or placebo like antidepressants, but only in the beginning, not for long term use.
