16:10 McCarraher's "misenchantment" thesis is is similar (with some differences) to Jacob Josephson-Storm's thesis (as seen in his book, the Myth of Disenchantment)

William Cavanaugh's theology reminds me of a story my dad told me when I was a kid... he was an elder at a Presbyterian church. When someone suggested putting a Canadian flag in the sanctuary, he objected ferociously and refused to allow it in there. At that time, the Canadian flag was even more relatively benign and non-jingoistic than it is now: this being decades before Canada's reputation as a place of secular smugness on the one hand, or the convoy protest on the other. (The convoy protest was itself riddled with flags). Nonetheless, it would have been a statement of sacralizing the nation-state and indeed the placement of a graven image in the holy place. Looking back, I can now see how prophetic his action was.

One of your guests seemed to imply that the church recognized Christ as God because otherwise the emperor would claim superiority over the church as "a son of God."
