A cut with an extremely sharp knife really doesn't hurt much. Many people get cut with really sharp things and don't even feel it (happened to me in a hardware store. Should've gotten several stitches). There's much less resistance. Skinning your knee would hurt way more than his home surgery.

You're pain tolerance must be low? I've been through loads of situations where I've been wounded (not by my own hands) that left me nearly dead. Anyone who's stubborn enough like this guy can do stupid things to themselves with the wrong encouragement. Though I agree with many people who commented that insurance is insane in the US. It still is not at all safe to do this, even if your tolerance is high, like mine or someone else. Dr. Lee was extremely worried for his safety and for good reason, if done once he may do it again and the next time he might not be so lucky.

The dent isn't unusual, even for hospital surgeries, but sutures that went deeper could, possibly, have lessened that, but may have caused discoloration instead. His wound care must have been very good as well, because that shape is clean and the color is healthy and even.

I can empathise, as I’m forced to remove my own (reoccurring) ingrown toenails; because I’m immune to local anaesthetic & many other things, even epidural. My mum tried to ask if they’d consider general anaesthetic for the ingrown surgery, but they refused. They expected me to just lie there & let them stick me with needles full of stuff that doesn’t work & then yank out the whole nail without ANY kind of working numbing/pain relief. I more or less said “F*ck that” & I started learning how to do it myself, in a way that caused little pain & no crazy amounts of blood. I’ve had some shocked nurses tell me “Why don’t you give the local anaesthetic another chance? Maybe it’ll be different now.”, but they have no idea. They could give me a heavy dose of IV morphine & the difference would only be barely noticeable. Heck, even all my dental work had to be done under general anaesthetic! So, yeah. Always consider before judging someone’s actions to self-operate. Some people just don’t have any other choice. 🥺🤷‍♀️

Everyone needs to remember that anesthesia has only really existed for the last 160 years or so. Before then, you had to either get drunk/high or bite down on something if you needed a procedure done. Surgery was also often done by the local barber. So him cutting that out himself shouldn't be considered that strange when compared to history.

Cancer treatment and in office lypoma removal have an ocean of space between them and are incomparable. Cancer treatment is many visits, many professionals, many facilities, ongoing care. People go into debt for all sorts of things...the latest iPhone, massive weddings, vacations beyond their means, non necessary expensive clothing and accessories, spring break trips, Bachelorette trips, etc. If "healthcare" is as important as ppl say it is, it's logical that you put that above all non necessary items. These in office procedures are not very expensive.

You have to pay for services. All services. These in office procedures are not very expensive ... and worth it. Ppl pay more for their not necessary toys in life than these procedures. @@susansmith493 It is true that these procedures are worth it, and maybe even not very expensive. But the unfortunate reality is that many people in this country simply cannot afford this care. I'd rather go to a doctor or a clinic if I suspect something is wrong. I refuse to perform surgery on myself because that crap hurts and I don't want to hit an artery or a vein, bleed out, develop a serious infection or worse, die. My boyfriend constantly says stuff like if he had something similar to these patients, he'd cut it off himself but luckily, his sister in law intervened and said that if he did such a thing, he could develop infections and end up having to pay way more just to get treatment for infections. Infections aren't a joke and they could lead to sepsis, which is fatal. My aunt died from sepsis due to medical malpractice from her doctor not changing her dressing for a treatable cellulitis and my boyfriend's godmother died from sepsis back in 1989.

Just like this gentleman, I too removed a sebaceous cyst from my head. I’m bald and so it stood out and it really played with my self esteem. Long story short, I got a mirror above my head, put some ice on top of the cyst, some alcohol, and I cut it out with a single blade barber knife. My aunt, whom I lived with at the time and was a nurse, lost it on me! Just like Dr. Lee said, my aunt feared I could’ve cut open a bigger blood vessel and bled out. Needless to say, I’ve never done this again. The reasons behind me doing it were ignorance and cost of the surgical removal, I was young. While I wouldn’t advocate for a DIY, I would understand why some individuals would take this matter into their own hands.

In high school I had a zit grow under the skin on my forehead. It got so bad my friends were calling me Cyclops. One night I woke up with a splitting headache from the zit so I got a needle and went in front of a mirror and put the needle straight in as far as I could get it. When I pulled it out I just touched the skin around it and puss and blood went flying all over the mirror. The relief I experienced can't be put into words. I immediately went back to sleep and awoke feeling great. Sometimes you just have to do it yourself. Of course this was 1969 and our family didn't have much money yet. I told her I had highly considered taking it out myself and she said she didn’t blame me. I too bled nonstop. The longest was 7-8 weeks I believe. I thought I was having a mental breakdown.
