This idea that everything in the universe is formed by vibrations ties in with the fact that God created the heavens and the earth by speaking - maybe these vibrations are the effects of his voice or are his voice. As John says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:1-3 NIV

Somebody please explain this to me: what do scientists mean when they say our universe is like insects on a growing soap bubble? My simpleton response to that is “doesn’t that mean the universe is 2d?” But there’s obviously something I’m missing.

A very poetic speech from Dr. Kaku, but there are some things he is saying from his own experience where cannot really comment on, because I am not him, some parts where he is disseminating facts (information that we can reliably remeasure and thus prove to be true) and theories (explanations of how things work that describe reality pretty good and have not been disproven yet and most likely will only be refined as we find more facts and data) that we know quite certain, some hypotheses (explanations for the world, like string theory, that cannot be really proven or disproven right now or may never be) that he tells like they are accepted and not disproven theories and some metaphysical musings that he presents as being not yet disproven theories and the audience just laps it up as being true. As someone who has a doctorate title in physics and has seen a lot of famous physicists speak I am disappointed that he does not seem to trust the public to understand the differences between the different terms and while very poetic, I think a lot of the public will be disappointed to find out that string theory, while still a hot contending hypothesis that to some extent will play an important role in finding the Hypothesis/Theory of Everything, may not be necessarily true. The eternal inflation multiverse hypothesis that he mentions might also play a role as well, but as we cannot yet gather data to test these hypotheses and turn them into valid theories, and may never be able to, and thus I do think it is his duty to tell as such. He is a brilliant physicist, but unlike a lot of other brilliant physicists, like Leonard Susskind, the late Carl Sagan, the late Richard Feynman, he is less able to eloquently educate those who have problems understanding what science and in particular high energy particle physics and cosmological physics is all about. I do recommend a channel like PBS Space-Time for more in depth understanding, because the more people understand the purpose of what scientists and in this case physicists are trying to understand, the better they will understand the amazingly weird properties of the small, the big and existence under extreme circumstances.

I am very glad that you wrote this comment. There is a great amount of uncertainty involved in the String Theory as it's relatively new, and him speaking as if all of it is true, with his lack of modal language like 'maybe' and 'perhaps', is definitely something every person who has earned the title physicist should avoid when presenting such a big theory to the public. He narrated his story in a very beautiful way, and after hearing that the universe is like a giant musical composition, I feel very inspired. However, science is science and one should not say misleading things as people would take them the wrong way. Disclaimer: I am just a student, so I have a lot more to learn about physics, but even if I am just a young man with little to no experience in regards to theoretical physics, I think that Michio Kaku does not mention the flaws of The Theory of Everything except that it is incomplete and instead starts to talk about how certain he is that String Theory is the answer to all our questions.

MICHIO, AN ANCIENT THEORY EXPLAINS THAT A PERFECT FACTOR TURNS INTO AN INFINITY OF IMPERFECT FACTORS IN ORDER TO HAVE A CAUSE-EFFECT SHOW GAME WHERE ALL THOSE FACTORS ARE ACTORS AND SPECTATORS IN A FORUM CALLED UNIVERSE, OF WHICH ALL THOSE FACTORS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR, AS WELL AS OF THEIR OWN PARTICULAR CONDITION, ROLE AND BALCON FROM WHICH THEY ALL ENTERTAIN ARE BEING ENTERTAINED IIN RETURN. IN OTHER WORDS, BEING PERFECT DOESN'T PAY, IT'S TOTAL BORDOM. THUS, IT'S BETTER TO PLAY AN IMPERFECT ETERNAL GAME OF SURPRISES AND LIES, OF PAIN AND PLEASURE, OF ADMIRATION AND DECEPTION, OF WINNERS AND LOSERS THAN NO GAME AT ALL!! THIS COULD VERYCWELL BE THE REAL 'THEORY OF EVERYTHING'. ADJUDICATING RESPONSIBILITY TO "LUCK", "RANDOMNESS" OR TO "NOTHINGNESS"" AS THE CAUSING REASON BEHIND THE UNIVERSE IS A VERY, VERY IRRESPONSIBLE WAY TO EXPLAIN ANYTHING!
