As a teacher of almost 30 years, one thing that used to concern me greatly was authorities placing children with grandparents who had failed their own children. They were the reason the parents had become unfit parents in the first place. The cycle just repeats in most cases. So sad to see. 😢

No, that’s completely wrong. You can’t always blame the parent and that’s something I am getting so sick and tired of people blaming grandparents or parents for the way the kid acts. I grew up with multiple kids that came from very good strict homes, healthy strict homes. But they decided on their own they wanted to do bad things and I would even tell them if you get caught you’ll get in trouble. They said to me well I’ve done it before and I haven’t been caught yet. and the other thing is what was wrong with my mom had nothing to do with her parents, but they raised me and I’m glad they did. I was better off with my grandparents than some foster family. Because the school that I went to we ended up having a lot of kids that was in foster care and they would come to school with bruises and broken bones. there was a few cases where the kids was taken out of school for good and moved because some of these homes the father had impregnated the foster daughters and raped their foster son. This one household that everybody thought was such a loving foster family the father had gotten three of the kids pregnant. They definitely would’ve been better off their grandparents.

I went through multiple forms of abuse myself and any time I pointed it out, it's "you're not remembering everything," or "you're not remembering that correctly." They use this sentence as a way to invalidate and minimize the damage they've done. It also makes the victim question their own memory and sanity.

It has nothing to do with the generation, it is a family cultural problem that propagates down from parent to child. Control, narcissism, alcoholism are behaviors that stay in families and they are not going to change unless you are aware of them and you make a conscious choice. I catch myself with behaviors that my parents had with me, I work on curbing the bad ones and fostering the good ones. It works most of the time, the generations after mine are doing the same and becoming better people than I am. Do not expect perfection, work on the good enough.

He’s wrong about being trustworthy and that means you can get trust and freedom. My parents gave me zero freedom growing up and i never gave them one reason not to trust me. My mother hated me for being born and she poisoned my father who was rarely home due to work and so i was treated horribly while my brother was treated like a Prince bcuz she loved him. My brother ran away, didn’t follow rules, drank and did drugs but was treated much better always - even now as adults. You can’t make someone - an adult treat you like you deserve by being good and trustworthy. Doesn’t always work. If there is an adult with hate in thier Heart for a kid/teen then nothing they do will ever change that.

I'm so sorry you went thru that. It was a very similar situation in my home. I was the only girl with four brothers. My mother is a narcissist and it's well documented that narcissist mothers, hate their daughters. Mine was always competing with me and saying how much better than me she was. She would criticize and point out any faults, whether they were real or not. She took credit for any accomplishments I had. My father was obsessed with my mother and followed her lead, even though, she treated him just as badly. I never fit in with my own family. The damage that does to you is devastating and affects many of the decisions you make in life. I'm only now, in my older age, figuring out why I am the way I am and trying to heal. It's a sad, sobering reality.

I sincerely hope these girls have at least one person in their lives that will give them sound advice without crippling their self worth. My Grandma was my lifeline and the reason I survived my childhood. I’m a grandma now and required my kiddos to abide by my rules when in my care. Not once did I criticize them for making a mistake or accidentally breaking something. I would never ever say anything when I was mad, other than go to the bedroom until we both calm down. If they were ever upset about something and would do the screaming crying I would console if possible (the parents going through divorce) The frustration they were feeling wasn’t getting out at home, it wasn’t allowed. I would take them to the bedroom and tell the to scream into the pillow all they wanted to. They were even told they could hit the bed/mattress if they needed. Usually in under 10 minutes they would come out exhausted and want to cuddle. I just figured it was better to release the pent up frustration, anger, and helplessness on our bed than their siblings. Each child is different though, the one above is almost 20 and a scholarship for college. Seems just yesterday that I was changing his diaper.

I feel very sorry for Emilie. To have two militants yelling at you 24/7 and telling you that what you're doing is always wrong, I would rebel, too. I think both grandmothers are scared to death because Emilie's mom is incarcerated. Emilie is NOT her mother. The grandmas do want to be "right fighters" as Dr. Phil says... but I agree that Emilie will gain more of the privileges she craves is she controls her own behavior. Be trustworthy and you'll be trusted, right?

The fact that she was comfortable gaslighting publicly says a lot about how much worse it probably is behind doors. People tend to at least try to behave better in extremely public settings especially when it's going to be recorded and broadcasted. If they're like this with so many witnesses, I don't think Dr Phil's advice will work. Behaving better isn't going to be a good enough bargaining chip with people who have abusive tendencies. They only care about being right and asserting their power. The more those girls try to conform, the more those women will demand and try to control. It's as good as telling someone being abused to simply do what their abuser asks and then they won't get hurt as often. It puts the responsibility on the victim and ignores the true issue.

I'm just now seeing this 5/2024. I just wanted dr. Phil to ask this girl if she wanted a hug and if she did please dr. Phil give a great big bear hug. Those two grandmas were just condemning her, shame on them.

BS. My grandparents weren't know it alls. They were nice people. Let me tell you something, if someone manages to live to 65 or 75 they do know more than a 14 or even 21 year old that hasn't lived that long. Doesn't mean their take on things is always right but by virtue of living that long they do know more.

Well, you would have to look at the entire episode. The issue isn't that the grandparents took her phone away. The issue is that the grandparents were constantly punishing her even though she didn't do anything wrong. Essentially, they were being over restrictive to the point that the girls didn't even know how to act anymore because they were being punished for every little thing even though there was no actual wrongdoing even when the girls tried to follow the rules, the grandparents would move the goalposts. So, there was no rewards, there was always criticism and disappointment and punishments. The cell phone thing is just the one that was easiest to track and talk about

My grandmother was the best best best and I loved her so much. She was a horrible mother and not great person when she was younger or when she drank, but, she never let it out on my sister and I. She couldn't love or treat my mom right but she tried her best to make it up to my sister and I. I can't imagine if she was as foul to us as she was to our mom
