I was there that day with Dr. Atkins as I worked for his magazine at the time. The moderator was incredibly rude to him backstage as she went up to each of the panelists to shake their hands, but she completely ignored Dr. Atkins. He just smiled, threw up his hands, and was like "Ya, I'm not here to make friends." He went out there on that stage swinging and did a killer job explaining his program. RIP Dr. Atkins!

Since I started this diet I no longer have a need to nap during the day, and I feel more positive and balanced. It is a remarkable change, this shows the advantage of this diet.

So she has some liver problems, and her fingernails and mouth are the colour of mustard. Minor problem. Has major problems with depression and angry outbursts. It happens. Has turned green and fainted at work several times, and they had to call an ambulance. Could happen to anyone. Fragile bones. It happens. Uterus turned white from lack of estrogen. The fact that carbs are used for energy before fat is often cited by vegetarian and low-fat cultists as proof that high-carb, low-fat diets are better, but the truth is that the body burns carbs first to prevent blood sugar from getting too high. When you eat high-carb, your body has to release insulin to bring your blood sugar back into a healthy range, and one of insulin's major roles is prompting the body to store fat. Because the body has an unlimited ability to store fat versus carbs, it converts the excess carbs into fat, causing weight gain.
@hotwax93768 жыл бұрын
***** Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that McDougall's diet also restricts sugar, refined grains, and processed vegetable oils not just animal products.
@hotwax93768 жыл бұрын
***** I hear you; sometimes I just want to give up, too. What I understand is that although complex carbs break down more slowly than simple carbs, they both raise blood sugar and cause insulin spikes. One of insulin's main functions is the storage of body fat--in order to bring blood sugar down, the body converts the excess sugar to fat and then stores it. High blood sugar also damages arteries by causing inflammation, and chronic inflammation in arteries is the main cause of plaque buildups.

I became insulin resistant and obese while I was a vegetarian as a teenager, I didn't know better. You can do low carb and be a vegetarian, they don't necessarily have to be opposite ends of the diet spectrum. Low carb helped me lose 120 pounds and though I'm still pre-diabetic, maybe it won't turn into type 2 diabetes now.

For people shitting on this diet. Try it first. Also understand that this diet has been used by millions. You need to see reviews that are in the long term. And ask those people if possible what they experienced. You might see people say this works and that doesn't. But It comes down to the fact that is it worth the risk? And if so, give it a try. I've had friends who have been on this diet. They had very good reviews of it. But the biggest thing that all these popular diets have us the exclusion of white sugar and processed foods that cause health problems. Man has messed with nature, using science made in a lab. But not in the real world. Atkins did both I believe. That's my point of view.

Mari Laucher His heart condition was not diet related. It was due to a virus. Yes, this can happen. My dad had aortic valve stenosis, which ultimately caused his death by heart attack, and it was condition he had since he was a child and diet had nothing to do with it. Doctors also confirmed to us that diet played zero role in his death.
@marilaucher99896 жыл бұрын
People will find any excuse to promote a paradigm that supports their research. Infectionscan cause heart failure of course and I am quite sure that arteries covered in plaque and daily consumption of high amounts of saturated fat had no connection whatsoever.
@justylex6 жыл бұрын
Mari Laucher infections can cause abnormalities and weaknesses. And not everyone who has a heart attack even has heart disease. My dad did not have heart disease, but rather a faulty mechanical valve that had been put in to replace a faulty aortic valve that had been faulty since childhood. Not everything can be blamed on diet.

The great part of this clip is that we can see that Atkins was -put politely- not particularly skinny or healthy. Some of the presenters in this debate look healthier, and are significantly skinnier. Caveat emptor.
@kathy6017 Жыл бұрын
How do you know he wasn’t healthy? What were the ages of the others? Please provide facts.
@BartBVanBockstaele Жыл бұрын
@@kathy6017 Those are reasonabe questions. Atkins was about 70 years old at the time. He died three years later. Circumstances of his death are somewhat controversial. The statements by people from his company are generally considered "highly unlikely to be true", for example, the claim that he merely appeared obese because he gained so much fluid (60 pounds or so) during his last days, something any physician knows is impossible. Other parts are less certain, such as doubts surrounding the fall that seems to have killed him. But what I am referring to here, is much simpler: in this video, he was not only not skinny but clearly overweight and likely obese, which is something any doctor will tell you when he/she sees it. In this video clip it may not be completely clear what the others are like, but here is a link to the complete set of presentations, allowing you to judge for yourself: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHuQY4BmZ7SBa6c I view this debate as an extremely important one. I learned about the Atkins diet when the first version came out in 1972, and later on during my classes of organic chemistry in med school when it was named together with the older Stillman diet. Atkins' diet appeared to be extremely successful for a while. Then it petered out, until he produced a new version in 1992 when it arguably became even more successful. Unfortunately, it was all largely a mirage, and few people were able to maintain it. There are good medical reasons for that. We know that better now, than at the time, even if most of the important stuff was already known at that time (and long before that). The currently popular keto-diet is just another iteration of the Atkins diet. I would love to say that losing weight is easy, but it is not. There are no easy solutions. Only hard ones and harder ones. Willpower is and will likely remain for as long as we will be alive, the main ingredient of a successful diet. It is popular to claim otherwise, but taking a good look at the statistics will teach you quickly that most current approaches are not great either, willpower remains ingredient number 1.
