Jonah, I'm 62 and I had a total hip replacement on March 29th. I was walking just like you for almost a year until I booked the surgery. Other than the incision pain, the hip pain was gone. I stopped taking prescription pain meds after 3 days and only took tylenol while icing for any discomfort. It's now going on 11 weeks and I'm 95% walking normal and with no cane. The biggest hurdle I had was getting the thigh and glute muscles back to full strength since they atrophied and were very weak. I've been seeing a physical therapist regularly (once a week and doing home exercises) since a week after the surgery. While it was a little slow, the muscles have progressively improved, some weeks more than others. You're still young and strong, and will heal even quicker than I have. You'll be up and back to normal by 3 months of your surgery. My advice is to do everything your doctor and physical therapist asks, and be patient with the results, as the recovery/strengthening does take weeks. Do your simple surgery exercises to prevent blood clots and take your antibiotic to stave off infection. I had no problems with either. I'll be praying for your speedy recovery. Keep the faith as you will be better and back to being a normal teenager, soon.

Glad you had such a fabulous experience with recovery. Noticed you didn’t mention 3 prior surgeries and doing farm work in between them. Oh, and did you have loss of the ball with bone on bone being the result of that loss? Was your leg 3 inches shorter prior to 4th surgery? Just curious. And did you have parents urging you to go ahead and put your foot down on the crutches since Jonah was doing so well with toe touching?? The doctor said NO WEIGHT BEARING for FOUR WEEKS, just toe touching. The Doctor orders always seem to be overturned by the parents. Glad you recovered. I only want the same for Jonah. Jonah puts on a brave face for his parents. He does want his life back. But his parents put great expectations on him under the guise of encouragement and it has proven disastrous every time. Toe touch only. The doctor knows what is best. You don’t want to have to go to a rehab hospital for a month because you did what your parents expected. I’ve been there and it is so hard to get through. And makes home therapy take longer. I’m 1 year 6 months post surgery and still on a cane. Why? I tried to please family. Not my doctor. Be well Jonah. You have your whole life to live. Praying for you to do what’s right for you. Happy for lefty’s good result. Hope I can toss the cane one day, too.

Would you happen to know anything about heavy duty plastic hip instead of metal one? I had a young friend who was in a bad accident in his later 20's and ended up having 3 hip replacements because of infection. His final and Top surgeon said that he probably caught the infection before he even left the hospital the 1st surgery. And he said that infections like to get on metal are hard to get rid of. So his 3rd replacement was a plastic hip. But before he could have the 3rd surgery, he needed to get his 2nd metal hip removed and get IV antibiotics for quite some time to get out of his body plus had to wait 6 months before having the last, 3rd hip replacement put in and was plastic. My friend is much better and now has been active a few years now. I really hope the Rhodes asked lots of questions and asked about heavy duty plastic hip just in case. Poor Jonah has been through already in his young life. I'm praying for him 🙏.

She lost an appointment to the Naval Academy and West Point because of her issue. She is an amazing women who has overcome this and many other obstacles. She was not able to get a hip replacement until several years ago as the insurance companies and no doctors would take on the liability. The issue could have been fixed when she was young. Following her surgery she is a totally different person exuding vitality, active lifestyle and free of pain. We were crying as we watched his initial injury. Our prayer has been that someone would be able to help return him to a pain free and active life. As we were watching, we began to cry tears of happiness as he will be without pain and be able to have a life full of adve tires and fun.

Thank goodness Jonah is getting the help he needs, it has been so hard watching your amazing young man go from the most independent hard working youngsters on you tube to someone who is crippled with pain and become reliant upon a crutch and to hear him say he can't do something or he is in pain has been so hard to watch. Any operation is scary especially for a youngster but after the initial pain of surgery subsides Jonah will be so happy that he has had the hip replaced. It may take a couple of months for him to build himself back to where he likes to be and the hardest part will be holding him back from doing too much too soon but it will be so lovely seeing him back on the farm doing what he loves again. Jonah truly is an amazing young man and a remarkable role model, not only for his siblings but for everyone who knows him or watches your videos - I think little Henry is going to grow up very much like Jonah. 🇦🇺Please make sure Jonah gets counselling. As someone that had many surgeries in my teens, I was more susceptible to depression and anxiety. I never went to a councillor and ended up suicidal. I had two facial surgeries, got bashed (age 13) had emergency surgery as I was unconscious, went to court, knee surgery that didn’t work, skin cancer (I died twice on the operating table), then knee surgery again. All in the space of 11 months. My parents thought I was fine as I acted fine but my self talk wasn’t good. Better safe than sorry. I cried out to God asking why? I needed answers. Or I would end my life and God showed up.

It is crucial for him to be able to exercise his hip without putting stress on his hip muscles. I'm so thankful Jonah has a date for hip surgery. Woo Hoo. Time to get on with life as a 15-year-old boy. Justin, stop and reflect what you say in front of Jonah. "He can't do chores". "Out summer is threatened again, because Jonah". "We have camping". As for infection, Jonah can tell you if he gets cut/hurt, it's up to you all to see that he is checked against infection. Make sure Jonah doesn't feel the responsibility of things changing or not "normal". It's life and you roll with the punches, not complain about the bumps in the road that are so minor in comparison to the overall picture of Jonah's health.

My heart broke to hear Justin say Jonah was needed to do his chores before playing, walking and just being able to recuperate. And to say it in front of Jonah?. This isn’t the first time Justin has said this type of statement. It’s disgusting and totally insensitive. Before the accident, I have no doubt Jonah could run the farm with his siblings far better than his father. Jonah, I am praying for your complete recovery on your time table, not the chore schedule.
@spongebobsqueeze Жыл бұрын
I think the reason Justin makes an issue out of Jonah being unable to do chores is because that is what is most important to Jonah not to him. Justin can certainly afford to hire help. That farm is just as important to Jonah as it is to Justin.Its a huge part of his life and his identity. Its his farm too. Jonah is not a child, he is a young man. He has been raised to be self sufficient and to contribute to his family. His work on that farm is just as important to him as Justins is. Jonah feels that when he is left out of the farm, he is left out of his life. Everything Jonah and Justin do on that farm is a chore. I don’t think you can identify how important a farm is for a farmer unless you are one and at this point in his life Jonah is a farmer. 17:37

It’s such a shock that you need to be somewhere where they can reassure you that what is happening is normal. I know he wants to be home, but please take the time. Also, I am afraid that your summer plans of hiking and what not with him are not going to come to pass. There is a good long recovery time after this surgery. It takes time for bones to knit together with the prosthesis. God bless you and strengthen you for what is ahead.

I am sorry to see the significant impact the accident has had on Jonah’s body. After my accident, I had six operations on my shoulder over 12 months. The last one was a reverse shoulder replacement. The discussion on infections is so true. My specialist/surgeon told me the same, and I had to watch for any scratches and operations for two years after the reverse shoulder replacement. I had a supply of antibiotics to take if I had any cuts, etc. Whenever I went to the dentist, I had to take antibiotics a couple of hours beforehand. I waited 2.5 years for my subsequent surgery, which was on my vocal cords.

@Justin Rhodes I'm by NO MEANS an expert where health issues are concerned. However, I have had 13 back surgeries. So I consider myself a bit more knowledgeable then the average person when it comes to back procedures. (Which are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than hip for sure!) But I did want to pop in and say that I'm really happy that y'all seem to be deciding against any fusions. The reason being is that I've had quite a few fusions over the years. The one thing that NO PHYSICIAN EVER WARNED ME ABOUT is the damage that fusions CAN DO to other parts of your body. Due to the lack of movement in a specific area, it can cause a ton more wear and tear and damage to other areas of your body having to work more or on overtime. Sometimes causing those body parts to have lots of pain, and to give way MUCH SOONER than usual. It's a catch 22 all the way around. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't! Extremely tough decisions. ESPECIALLY when making such a permanent decision for your child as we ALWAYS want to do what's best for them! And in my opinion, you guys are! Myself, I don't feel like any of my physicians were honest with me about the ramifications of fusion. I'm so glad and happy for Jonah's future that you've decided against this option!! Great big hugs and loves to yall!!! PS. Just something to think about. Day Surgery Vs. Overnight Hospitalization. Day surgery is really great and all. HOWEVER with a major surgery like a THR, it's good to really think about the possible level of pain Jonah could possibly be in after surgery. And the distance you guys are from the hospital. In such case, I would be a really strong advocate for at minimum one overnight stay. If not, possibly getting a hotel room close to the hospital for that first night just to see how he does. IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER that most often, the reason people seem to do well after day surgery and while they're still in recovery or the facility or hospital IS BECAUSE they're on very strong I.V. Pain medication. And those DON'T GO HOME WITH YOU! LOL!! They give you FAR LESS strength pain meds to go home on. And when those string IV Pain meds wear off in a couple hours after discharge..... I'm sad to say that IT'S AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY! Also....If possible, try to get his prescription for his take home pain meds filled PRIOR to discharge. That way you don't have to stop off on the way home. Or have to wait too long to get his next dose in him causing him to get off his schedule. Stopping on the way home tends to have the ability to really mess things up at times!! Thoughts and prayers will be with y'all! ESPECIALLY July 7th!! #UGOTTHISJONAH

In recovery and rehab, please, please, please follow the doctor and physical therapist instruction to a "t". Do not push him to go beyond what those professionals have instructed. Do not think that home cures and pushing him to meet your needs and goals of getting him active are going to hurry up the process. If you don't follow a rehab outline, you may end up with less than desirable results. Don't push physical activities that may not be appropriate nor make him feel he has to meet your activity expectations. And, for heaven sake, do not let him swim in the pond. That is probably an infection waiting to happen. It is a process and you may have to put your hopes and plans on hold to make his recovery as good as possible. Joy Giles

Hip replacement surgery does not always go smoothly. My sister had metal poisoning when her hip replacement began deteriorating. It was recalled by the manufacturer; however, she had to deal with a revision/replacement surgery. During the second surgery, the orthopedic surgeon BROKE her femur!! She had months of pain with pins and wire holding the bone together as it healed. Although the revision consisted of a ceramic-coated implant, the surgeon intentionally implanted a shorter one to allow more bone healing time. COVID hit, so she was stuck with surgical delays because her insurance company deemed it ‘non-emergency’ surgery. Then, her orthopedic surgeon moved to another city. She is now scheduled to see an orthopedic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for a revision of the revision of the revision of the original surgery. He’s confident that the ‘final’ surgery will be a success.

If Jonah need any dental work or a routine cleaning, schedule it now. Any disturbance of the bacteria around the gums can get into his bloodstream and cause an infection just about anywhere in the body. It'll be a minimum of 6 months after surgery when he can visit a dentist for any procedures. And, he will need a course of antibiotics prior to the visit. This has been explained to me 3 times in the past two years. Once before each of my total knee replacements and again before my reverse total shoulder replacement. I am 69 years old. Infection is minimal don’t fear the surgery, Jonah is young he will recover well, but because of his age he may need another replacement because he’s an active young man as he should be. I’ll keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers 😊

Is this result of a botched ER surgery?

Bless his heart. Jonah, stay strong bud. I know it can get disheartening to continue having surgery, been there before but with my insides, not my hip. You're in my continued prayers. Lilly is going to seriously grow into such an amazing little woman. She really amazes me at her talents. You both have done amazing jobs with your children. Us country girls do grow up into awesome cooks and people.

Wish you the best Jonah for your up coming surgery. I will be watching and waiting for videos. I am going to be your cheerleader. I just had two knee replacements this year. You got this buddy.

As a person that's worked in customer service for nearly 20 years. As much as the customer would like to always be right, they're not. Being a customer doesn't give you, the customer the right to treat an associate like crap, or be disrespectful when things don't go as you may like.

If I was stressed, I think I'd go nuts if I had a chatty dad with a camera constantly in his hand. The family has a lot going on now, hoping for the best for everybody!

Justin makes Jonah depressed in certain things he says about his injury. Sometimes when a boy is nervous the less said the better.
@grannydumpling5218 Жыл бұрын
And I thought I was the only one that sees this. Justin has been so insensitive to Jonah blaming him for not being well enough to do chores. Jonah is a kid. And Jonah has been doing adult farm work. Justin needs to quit reminding Jonah of messing up missing their summer plans. I’m disgusted with the adult farmer who owns the land and is responsible for the work, not his kid. Praying for you Jonah to get through everything.

Jonah, I'm a retired OR nurse and total hip surgeries are some of the most routine procedures. Your surgical team is going to take good care of you the entire time and you'll be walking again. You got this!!

Sending lots of prayers and encouragement your way Jonah! Thank you for sharing your journey. You will be an encouragement to kids as well as adults going through hard things. You have been an overcomer every step of the way. I'm so glad you got a date for your surgery that is sooner rather than later. Great job mom and dad for going the extra mile to help him through this with finding the right care and solution. Great job for Josiah, Lilly and Gideon for stepping up and helping extra around the farm. Team Rhodes all the way. Y'all got this!!

Jonah is so grown up! I’m so glad that you found a solution for him. The look on his face after the appointment was absolutely beautiful. Rebekah, I am so with you about customer service. I do it for a living, so I know how hard it can be, but the customer is always right …even when they’re dead wrong. 😂

Jonah, i wanna give you a word of encouragement. If you have faith in your surgeon, you will do fine. Its been 4yrs since I had my hip replacement and it was the best thing ever. I only spent 2 days in the hospital for therapy. You got this and the most important thing is that you will have your life back. I wish you the best and God Bless you 🙏 ❤

I wish for you a successful surgery with no complications. A speedy and total recovery. A friend of mine who is much older than you was back to work and working in her garden dancing and without pain in just a couple of weeks after surgery. You will have to work on getting the strength back in you leg so that part may take a little longer. I’m so excited for you. The nervousness you feel is totally normal. You are strong and healthy. Can’t wait until you surgery is done. 🙏🤗

I have been near very unpleasant people proclaiming "The customer is always right". Seeing the wait staff in tears; I told them there is a second maximum ... "we only serve pleasant people" so in all, you must be pleasant, it is not just "ME"
