I just want to say that I'm a great admirer of Shashi Tharoor as I accept that just a few decades ago all religions were more progressive on average and he seems to be the one politician in the world calling for what used to be called modernization in religion, something that was neither excessive on the liberal or conservative side. I also want to say that he has some very interesting takes on religion. I have my own, basically I can almost prove that there is an at least neutral afterlife and one if not many Gods. The system of Karma in the Dharmic religions fits this perfectly. I see that he even knows something about religion in general that I never did, that God cannot be absent from anything (i.e. Hell) if He's omnipresent. I am by no means all-knowing and in fact I'd say most believers of most religions are more knowledgeable about their faiths than I am, but I was under the duress of an existential crisis which lead me to articulate what everyone's intuition already knows. Hindutva is a problem just like the Politicized Sharia of the Salafis (believers that emulate the prophet through the examples of the first three generations of Muslims) in Islam. The problem is that such people always have more kids than the secular as the secular educate their women vastly more. If secularism in the American, German and Indian sense, that is: religious neutrality, not constraint, is to survive it must be circumscribed by some kind of mandatory population growth and parenthood by the educated and secular minded. And yes, I very much admire Hinduism's love for diversity, and as an eclectic polytheist I may not be official but I probably count as some kind of syncretist with your religion as I like to worship al Gods that would not be offended by worship of others. May the light of Surya shine in India for another 2 billion years.

@@jaynag1The problem with that reasoning is that anyone can claim anything, claiming revelation, with no evidence whatsoever. And, then that joker will say, prove it, or we will have to agree that there is a possibility how so ever minuscule it may be. Morality can be deduced a priori and does not require religion. Then what value is left of religion or god? In my opinion a destructive, divisive, negative value which in a way should be a rational reason to say it cannot be, thus there cannot be a god. Very well explained sir! but I would like to correct you about the belief that "Hindus worship 33 Crore Devtas". It’s not true, in Sanskrit the word Koti refers to both ‘crore’ as well as ‘type’ and the use of the first meaning has led to the spread of this false belief. The oldest Hindu texts enumerate 33 principle Devas who were the guardians of Nature and Cosmic Creation. these 33 devas are 12 Adityas (Solar gods including Indra, Surya, Mitra, and Varun), 11Rudras (Manifestations of Lord Shiva), 8 Vasus (Elemental gods such as Vayu, Agni, Antariksh and Dyaus, the Sky God) and 2 Ashvins in the Brahmanas. At last, “religion is meant to free you (from pain and grief). not to persecute.”

I believe in the initial concept, it might as well have been just 33, but in the context post Vedic and modern Hinduism, I would say the crores interpretation applies. Because in the philosophy of the religion, each individual has the freedom to envision the Brahman/Shakthi/Paramatman in any form they feel most comfortable with, that manifestation can take literally any form, and yet be that single unity. Besides, Hinduism being a belief system constituting many different sub systems that were slowly absorbed into the larger faith, each individual representation thus becomes part of the whole and yet retains its uniqueness and individuality.

Hinduism is an Atheism and a theism How? "Long story short " Universe (Brahmand) consists of 4 things 1. Param atma (Energy) 2. Param tatva (Matter) 3. Maha kal (Time ) 4. Kal (Black space) (Today modern Science says Space and Time are not different they are different attribute of 1 thing and Hindus use 1 word "Kal") 1. Param Atma 2. Param tatva Both are Param (Supreme) Hence equal Atma = Tatva Energy = Matter E = M Both can not be created nor destroyed only translated ( or incarnated) into another form (or body ) Both are Trinity *Energy* has trinity aspect 1. Creation +ve 2. Preservaton = 3. Destruction -ve *Matter* has trinity aspect 1. Proton +ve 2. Neutron = 3. Electron -ve Hindus personified it as Brahma +ve Vishnu = Shiva -ve Since Energy and matter are two 2 types of worship 1. Meditation (Yog-atma se param atma) 2. Idol worshipping Why idol worshipping? Hindus do the same rituals on the purchase of car bike house TV AC etc which we do before idols Bcoz A car can be moulded into an Idol of Natraja But no change in the composition of the proton neutron electron Proton and neutron are always connected form Nucleous Brahma and Vishnu are also always connected through navel cord (Nabhi) Nucleous Hindi name is also "Nabhi" Vishnu the personification of preservative aspect of the Universe energy Or Simply Vishnu the preserver 1st avatar of Vishnu was Fish 🐠 2nd Avatar of Vishnu was Turtle 🐢 Now in last 150 years Science says the same how life evolved and preservered on Earth So Param atma + Param tatva + Maha kal + Kal = Universe (Brahm or Brahmand) The highest manifestion of Brahm is *Para Brahm* Multi Universe

With all due respect and admiration to Mr. Tharoor......I feel he fails to understand in a true sense that Hindus are not secular because India is secular..... but India is secular because the Hindus are inherently secular.... and he also fails to understand the fact that increasingly hard line Hindu stance in India is a defensive reaction on part of the Hindus to preserve their culture and way of life...... in India the Hindus have been tolerant, patient and have tried to accommodate the Abrahamic faiths for almost 1000 years.... I fail to understand "why only Hindus are expected to be secular and tolerant" and nobody expects this from Muslims ...... the Hindus are getting feed-up with this unjust biased so they are reacting and realizing that there is a time for peace and there is time to fight for your rights.....

Brilliant explanation of Hinduism. As a Christian it helped me a lot to get clarity on a lot of things and I can really embrace the idea of "acceptance" over "tolerance". One point on which I would like to correct Mr. Tharoor is where he said with regards to reincarnation that in Hinduism God is present even in the suffering and in the negative. The same is true in Christianity. The basis of Christ's suffering and death was to show that God was now participating in human suffering through the suffering of his son because Christ was the embodiment of every kind of negativity that humans face such as poverty, discrimination, injustice, and undeserved suffering. The only place where God is not present is in hell, which by the way is only a natural product of God's justice. If imperfect human beings can create jails and electric chairs to mete out justice in the world, how much more would an all holy God need to create a place where those who deliberately, with full knowledge choose to shun God's love and mercy and commit grave moral sins would need to go. Hell is not God's choice. It is the choice of those who choose to go there. It is God's will that everyone should be redeemed and saved and get to heaven (Christian version of Moksha) but in his love, he gives men total and unhindered freedom to choose evil over good. And if evil went unpunished, that would no longer be justice and we believe in a God that is all merciful (hence his offer of salvation through to all sinners through belief in the atoning sacrifice of Christ and forgiveness of sins as many times as you are willing to repent and confess) and at the same time a God who is all just. His justice requires judgment after our death but his love pours out infinite mercy till the moment of our death. The choice is ours. But God is present all the time, in heaven, on earth, and within us. That's what Christianity teaches. He is not just in a distant heaven. Just needed to clarify. So in that sense we have that common belief in Hindusiam and Christianity, that God lives with us, but we cannot be equal to God. I thank Shashi for sharing these insights into Hinduism which I of course respect because I believe before religion comes humanity. We are first human beings and the we are hindus or christian or Muslims. If we could each accept our common humanity so many of the conflicts in the world could be resolved with little effort. To use what divides us rather than what unites us can only be the work of the ungodly. Every human being deserves respect in the path of truth journey that they choose. I believe that the days of shoving one truth down the throat of people against their will are long gone. Besides, I don't think God (regardless of religion) is so insecure that he needs us to persuade or manipulate or coerse each other into believing in a particular version of him. I guess I would be labeled a liberal by other Christians for saying that, but if that is what it is, so be it.

Mr. Tharoor, what a wonder that you have wonderfully weaved core of religion with core of secularism.in such a wonderful articulation in your book 'I am a hindu' In such a dispassionate and intellectually sound manner you articulated the fact that grip of any given religion/culture narrow down the route to grasp reason in its true essence. I could make out what a boldness you command and what profound commitment you have to the social good that you compelled yourself to write a book of the kind you have written. There is much of compelling diplomacy though in doing this you could clear out how much you are a lover of man and secularism you cherish in the heart of your heart. The most unfortunate is that in the globe even today there is politics in spite of palpability of the possibilities of automation where human divide(political divide I mean) is as farcical as absurd. Due to our cultural lag of all mankind politics still prevails. And the great sould like you have to be so carefull in enlightening men to understand what is what of reality in the windy atmosphere of misconceptions and emotional support for those.

In Mathematics and Physics there is something called representation theory. For a given operator (some jargon in Mathematics) there can be many representations. So, same operator looks very different in different dimensions. Similarly , God in Hinduism may be one but His representations (or manifestations) can be many and distinct in different situations.

Shashi has covered a lot of ground but one item that is significant that he missed: - Hinduism says here are a set of practices that are available based on your nature and pre-disposition, but a Hindu follows these practices and his goal is to attain a mystical experience. After the mystical experience, you do not believe but you KNOW! So you would hear yogi's say after you hear the sound of OM coming back from the universe you know. So for a person dedicated to Bhakti, it could be an experience of the form that he envisions. So it is not saying do whatever you want, it says here is what has worked in the past without being too prescriptive. It provides numerous maps to navigate pick one Bhakti, Karma, Raja yoga, and work at it.
