Hearing Dr. Tharoor is always a treat. He is one of the few rare Indian politicos one is actually proud of on an International stage. Just to bring one very valid point to notice here.....One of the prime reasons that PIOs are sent to India as Embassy heads/staff or as heads of companies is that one has to be Born & Bred Indian to understand the Crooked & Corrupt way India functions.......Even a foreigner who has lived a majority of their life in India can never understand this aspect. That is the real reason, unflattering though it is & not a Cultural affinity to the country. The figures of assaults on women in India may be 1/5 of those in Germany but these ladies in Germany receive Justice, while the 1/5 in India NEVER see the daylight of Justice & may actually end up losing their lives too if they try to pursue Justice like the Unnao Rape case victim to mention just one amongst thousands so that is a misnomer. As for electronic voting for NRIs through secure encryption..... well one can't see how 'secure' that would be given the EVM fiasco & the need to return to ballot paper in India itself. Having been an NRI myself one has to admit that more often than not one is not Proud of India on foreign shores, largely due to how India functions on home turf.

The Ganga action plan was, launched by Shri Rajeev Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India on 14 Jan. 1986 (www.mppcb.nic.in/gap.htm). Having excessive knowledge about language makes him amazing orator . But in terms of benefits, it would allow people who chose to leave the country due to economic prospects to retain ties with the country, and it would allow them to come back and contribute to Indian society again in terms of political, economic, and social expertise, among others. Right now, people who have to make the choice almost inevitably yet hesitantly choose the foreign country because it's presumably superior in terms of quality of life, economic and social freedoms, travel opportunities, etc. This only exacerbates the brain drain and makes the country come off as a closed and unwelcoming one. It's also kinda shameless for Indian media to parade around individuals like Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, Ajay Banga, and the like as Indian success stories when they've been stripped of their Indian citizenship; they're not Indian! Similarly with the Indian government shamelessly soliciting remittance and other funds from the Diaspora to help with the balance of payments situation every time the economy is in the doldrums.The pros far outweigh the cons (if there are any). And no, the OCI is not enough; it's merely a half-measure.
