I never really noticed the nationalistic undertone of Dr. Stone, but now that I think about it, it actually kinda fits the narrative of the show. Tsukasa wants to start a new civilization that rejects Japanese society as it was before, while Senku is sets out to bring back the world as it was before. I've only watched the first season though and it was a while ago so I might be misremembering their dynamic.

It's something which is subtle, but as I pointed out, it's very common in media in general. "America saves the world" type narratives are the norm in Western media after all, but because of the ubiquity, it's just background. Where Dr.Stone is interesting is that by centering Japan and promoting a techo-utopian ideology, it does end up tacitly providing some justifications for imperialism/colonialism which have been used historically. Without spoiling future events, this remains a relevant perspective to keep in mind as the narrative progresses.

This video is when Marxist analysis and study of swords come together! Truly insightful. I've always thought that Dr. Stone has a lot to say. As always, your video had me glued to the screen the whole time. Alas, very few people make Marxist analysis' of anime and manga. 18:54 - Well, you know, it's pronounced "Goontou". A nitpick, but still.

@@StudyofSwords By the way, regarding other Marxist analyses of anime, recently I've discovered a really good video essay called "The House Always Wins: An Examination of Capitalism In Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor". Check it out if you have time.

Thanks! Glad you liked it. Yeah I'll be honest I don't even remember where it was I came across the manga images, but I had zero interest in Dr.Stone until I saw the image where they have nihonto and knew there was something worth contributing, so I shottgunned the first season and the manga. It's got some very unique characteristics to say the least.

@@StudyofSwords I haven't even seen the show or read the manga, I'm just sort of vaguely aware of it, but it's still cool to learn all the other stuff you put into the vid. And it feels more approachable to me than the FF tactics stuff for whatever reason.

@@PIRATEOTR Excellent. I think the Tactics material was easier to grasp if you've played the games, for sure. Glad to know depsite the specificity, this video is still accessible.

I don't mind the weeb pivot, as long as it doesn't lose Mr. Marx. I know that Biden's victory in the US makes Americans less inclined to consume political theory because they aren't looking at blatant fascism, but I think this channel can maintain a distinct flavour as long as it is somewhat preserved.

For a little background info. My primary creative outlet prior to starting this channel was paneling at Anime conventions, and the channel came about because the pandemic happened. So what the channel originally represented was an opportunity to talk about some ideas I had which wouldn't have fit particularly well into the Convention format - hence why the two big projects thus far have been the FFVII and FFT videos. With that said, historical materialism is an incredibly effective perspective to have and so even though some future content my not be as overtly "political" as previous entries, it's still going to inform the discussion. Like this video and the techno-utopian impulses it projects. Plus, I have been very forthright in how much "swords" are going to be centered in the channel (it's in the name after all ;) The ethos has always been "Swords and Socialism", and that isn't going to change. Cheers! Edit to add: Oh, sort of burried the lead here - the "weeb pivot" was in reference to moving away from video games and focusing more on anime.

No, I'm afraid you didn't understand the thesis of the video. Dr. Stone isn't the source of what is (pejoratively) called "nihontō worship", it was simply an expression of that sentiment, in a relatively popular manga and then anime. The video itself broadens out from this specific example to interrogate the "technologically determined model of history" which undergirds the ideology of a work like Dr. Stone. I didn't think I was especially subtle about it? Thanks for watching the video though! Despite its crude editing (this was before I switched to Premiere), I nevertheless did put a lot of effort into it, so any views are always appreciated
