Dr. Sunil Gupta (MD, FRCP(Glasgow), FRCP(Edinburgh), FACP(USA), FICP, FIAMS, FIACM) is the Managing Director and Consultant Diabetologist at Sunil's Diabetes Care n' Research Centre, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that causes high blood sugar.
In a healthy person, the blood sugar before a meal should be more than 100 mg/dl & less than 140 mg/dl after the email (2 hours).
However, in diabetes, before meal blood sugar goes over 126 mg/dl and similarly after meal blood sugar may go more than 200 mg/dl.
Pre-diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level before a meal ranges between 100 t0 126 mg/dl and the after meal blood sugar varies between 140 to 199 mg/dl.
As per the data, every 10th or 11th Indian is a diabetic. The urban population has shown the most prevalence upto 12 to 14 % compared to 6 to 8 % from rural areas.
About 50% of people still don’t know about their diabetes. That too, only 50% of them don’t take medication as directed by their physician. In addition, merely 10 to 20% of people manage diabetes properly.
