In addition to being a pitching sensei, Tom House caught Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th HR ball while standing in the left-field bullpen in Atlanta.

Good interview. My boys play little league, and one of the problems with organized youth baseball is that the travel ball kids with their $400 bats and private coaches look down on the kids with the $40 bats and no private coach. Whatever happened to teaching these kids to be leaders and to help out the kids who need it? A lot of times, these kids get left by the wayside while the coaches cater to the "Stars" on the team. And a lot of these kids don't have fun playing baseball because of the stupid high expectations placed on them by coaches and the other kids..

Yup... travel ball is expensive. I got to play 2 years then my folks fell on hard times and my baseball was the first thing to go. I did get really really into skateboarding after that though so i can't really complain. I only found my love of baseball again about 2 years ago...i can still throw a pretty nasty curve. Lol.

Probably the best and most interesting interview I have listened to in a long time. The data and the ideas are invaluable as a coach whether it be new or validating. Thank you.

That book Tom mentions at 8:40, Range, by David Epstein, is really great. Highly recommended.

I give lessons and the one thing i try to beat into my kids head is to have fun. Costner gives a great line in Bull Durham that I love saying to my boys. I am very serious about helping teach proper movement and mechanics but I am as serious about the fun aspect as well. It is crazy to see parents so insane about performance at such a young age. I could go on for days. This is a great video by two wonderful ambassadors!!

I had a coach that hit off Nolan Ryan at the end of his career in spring training. He said the radar gun had him at about 95, but he said it seemed like 103 and that it was like it accelerated half way to the plate

You can say all you want about not treating sports like a job, but there are almost no ways for someone to make a great living without going to law, medicine, or computers, and many times the kids who excel at sports are usually not great at school or computers, so if they dont excel at sports they are looking at a very hard life. I had to fight to play sports because my mother hated organized sports and no dad. I couldnt even play till 14 with zero instruction, and I almost played D1 baseball. If I had some help I wonder what could have been. In stead I got Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Its nearly impossible for me to read a book more than 50 pages, I wanted to run out of school every day I was there. There are no good labor jobs

why is there so much politics in school sports, or the rich parents dominate. / most coaches are control freak dictators, with favorites & double standards.
