My journey has led me to believe that to have expectations of any sort is not helpful - having expectations is just directing the ego somewhere else rather than letting it go altogether. I left it behind and this reality threw me back into it, buried me in it, and dug another right beside me for my friends and family. However once you change your prospective / perception of things you will learn., therefore not falling into the hole again. Flip the negative in your life into a positive. I just start saying thank you for food, that I can breath keep going on with little or big things, have a house, wake up happy in the morning, my love ones are with me or closer to my soul and... so on.
