FYI - for those that overthink things like I do: 6 cups of flour, 1 cup glue, approx 6 5-6 cups water DOES equal six cups of paper mache paste (thick). Also it's worth getting a five gallon bucket to mix the paste with the drywall joint compound & cellulose.

I've got in mixed dry powder dry wall joint, not the ready mixed, do you think that will matter? I'm thinking using the thinner paper mache paste instead of the thick. Or taking it back before I open it and get the ready mixed 😂

besides the coconut/watermelon sound test is there any other 'better' way do check and see how many layer you have
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Either alternate materials between paper towel and newspaper or alter your strip layering direction. Both ways will give you a clear indication of which sections are from a previous layer vs the new layer and it's easy to count.

Can I pull this off using a big inflatable ballon instead of a beach ball?
@Drachenfang

Absolutely. Just watch out for shrinking due to air loss over time

Couple questions before I get in too deep: 1) Do I really need a mixer or is it more of a 'makes it easier' kind of thing. I don't think my friends would appreciate me using the stand mixer they got me for paper clay lol. 2) Approximately how heavy would you say these things get? Because I'm planning on making these to wear as for pumpkin head costumes, but I don't want to hurt my partner's shoulders if they're gonna be like 10 pounds, then I can at least buy some padding to keep it off his shoulders while I'm out buying all the other stuff! ^_^
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang 2 жыл бұрын
A mixer is wholeheartedly optional. I find mine makes things easier for me. When I started I used a dollar store paint mixer on a drill and that worked fine. Doing it by hand is an absolute pain in the tuckus though. Weight depends on size and thickness. If you plan on making one that is a mask I absolutely would pad the snot out of it or plan on putting a modified hardhat inside. Without those it will wobble all around someone's head and be insanely uncomfortable. 10 lbs sounds like a good guess for head weight.

I see you let yours dry after 3 layers overnight. Is overniggt necessary. Im in 90 degree days over here and wonder if a couple hours will do. Also will the flour mixture hold up overnight of i let it dry that long
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang Жыл бұрын
Overnight is just a solid suggestion. If you have things dry in a few hours then by all means go ahead to the next phase. Do you mean leaving a bowl of the flour mix out overnight? If so then it's fine. Just cover your bowl of mache paste and after one evening it should be fine. If you are at all worried about it then you can also use a mix of 60% white/wood glue and 40% water.

do you think that this would be a structurally strong enough to create a pumpkin head Halloween mask? If so, Is it necessary to fill in the entire bottom with paper mache and then cut away a place to put your head in, or would it be easier to just not fill in that bottom portion?
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang 2 жыл бұрын
I believe it is easily strong enough. Perhaps it may be a bit too strong and the weight on the head may be rather uncomfortable. The major problem you will deal with in the pumpkin mask is in keeping the head in a comfortable position so you are not banging against the sides and are still able to hear and have tolerable perception of the outside world. I plan on a tutorial on this eventually. For the time being you're probably fine just measuring the space you need to put a head in and not putting clay on that section.

@christopherpundsack2277 2 жыл бұрын
@@Drachenfang that's perfect, thank you. I will probably hot glue some light foam for padding too and keep the sides a little thinner. I'm just worried about buckling.
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang 2 жыл бұрын
@@christopherpundsack2277 It won't buckle. Paper clay dries hard as a rock. It'll crack before it bends

The drywall jointing compound - is it the powder stuff or the ready-made-up paste please? I am in the UK and appear to have both as options when I search for jointing compound, don't want to get it wrong. Thanks!
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang Жыл бұрын
Truth be told one is just the hydrated version of the other. I would go with the ready made up paste for ease of use. :)

How long does it take for the layers to dry before your start with the bottom layer.
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang Жыл бұрын
If you get a fan on all of the surfaces, have it in a warm area, and depending on the ambient humidity it can be dry in as little as 2 hours. Layer drying goes pretty quick. You just have to be careful about trying to warm it up to dry it faster as the ball will swell.

Question can packing paper be used ? I can get more of that for my money than newspapers.
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Just about any flavor of paper can be used so long as it can soak up mache fluid and has some flex to it. Use what's cheap or more ideally, free. I use newspaper because there is a free periodical near me that has issues left over when the new editions come out. You can sometimes get newspaper for free from recycling centers.

Have you ever tried using construction paper in the layers? I use them when I make tombstones, just wondering if there are issues making the sphere?

@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang 2 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest I have never had the cajones to put them out in the wind and weather for the length of October. Some folks that I am aware of do that with no ill effects so long as the project is properly sealed. The channels Stolloween and Oak Lane Cemetery keep their mache decorations out in the wind and rain. If you head over to the channel Ultimate Paper Mache there is an amazing crafter named Joni who is experimenting with some cool weatherproof clay made with portland cement added to the mix. I plan to try that myself but have not yet gotten around to it. So I'd love to say 'YES' but the answer is a resounding... 'pretty much... if you're careful... mostly.'

Is there anything you could use in place of the insulation?
@Drachenfang
@Drachenfang 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, toilet paper makes excellent clay and if you really need to you can soak newspaper in a blender and then blend it. The blender method is bad but once you strain out that blended paper you get a usable paper pulp material
