I use wallpaper paste as a paper mache glue, has anti mould stuff in it
@BrambleReid Жыл бұрын
I like the wood glue for masks also, it keeps the shape, and it also doesn't shrink nearly as much as the flour paste. I like the cooked paste because it is accessible and cheaper. Thank you.
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
You're right - I should have mentioned the shrinking issue. It does make a difference if the mask is made with a tight fit. Thanks for reminding me. 😊

Hai Joni, a tip from me, Peter. You could spray it on pieces of paper in advance with some plain (hand warm or cold) water from a spray flask. Spray 10-20 pieces of paper on a diner plate and let it take the water in. Not too moist, of course, just a lightly shot. It is pure to soak those vibers. Then you can shape it much better.
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea! Have you tried that?

Not with newspaper paper. The stuffing paper from Amazon is a little thicker.

I just use wallpaper paste for mine. Works great. Cheap. Mixes 1 part to 10 parts water. No cooking. I keep it covered at room temp and haven’t had it go “bad” yet. I don’t find flour to be that cheap anymore, and prefer to make bread with it 😅

I like titebond 3 because it says it's waterproof 🤷 . I like 6 layers, I'm planning on doing some gourd type purple martin houses with that stuff to see if it lasts outside 🤔. Maybe put 3 coats of exterior latex paint too .

Great video. Let me ask you. I watched your method of putting the paper strips on the cup/mold. Have you ever tried to tear up the paper really small as a batch, then mix it completely with the flour paste to form “clay”, whereby you then shape the clay into three dimensional objects rather than use molds? I tried this method with my last diorama scene and wondered if you ever did this before.
@UltimatePaperMacheАй бұрын
I haven't tried that particular method for making paper mache, although I do use my paper mache clay recipe often. I always use it in a fairly thin layer over an armature, though. If you mix your paper with glue and then use it as a solid mass, instead of putting it over something like a cup or armature, I'm not sure if it would ever dry completely on the inside. You might want to try it, though, to see if it works.

I've been mixing some titebond in with my old school cooked flour water paste. I'm hoping it ends with a best of both worlds and not in disaster and regrets. 🤞

Instead of flour I have used Tapioca starch. 1:12 starch to water and cooked in a double boiler like you do melting chocolate. The Tapioca starch seems to have longer stringed molecules and becomes more mucus like then if you used corn starch or potato starch. To reduce the chance of mould put in a drop of clove oil (also great fro tooth ache). As for how long paper mache lasts. Yes a LONG time. It has been used for furniture so that shows how strong it can be too.
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Petrik! I'll try to find some tapioca starch next time I go to the store. It sounds like it would be a great option for people with gluten allergies.

I was recommended using peppermint oil in the flour paste if there is a chance rodents could get into storage
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
Interesting - I didn't know that rodents don't like peppermint. It might be worth a try, but I'd experiment with something small first, just in case it didn't work.
@samuelbroad11 Жыл бұрын
From an old book of mine clove, peppermint and tea tree oils all help with resisting mould mainly; and quite possibly deter insects and rodents. But I've heard of rats eating MDF wood panels, PVC plumbing pipes and actual concrete...love those little troopers, gotta be one of my favourite mammals!

By the way, is it difficult to get wallpaper paste in the US? In Germany wallpaper on the wall is standard in (as good as) every household. So if you go for a paper maché project you always use/buy wallpaper paste. They sell it in every hardware store; in general it is powder you mix up with water & a package lasts forever... When I want to have a more solid result with only few layers of paper, I'm adding some wood glue. 🌻 Love & cheerings for all Jonni projects 🤗
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
I'm sure the wallpaper paste is available here - not in my tiny town, but I'm sure you can get it in any big city hardware store. I've just never used it myself. 😊

Hello, thanks a lot for all knowledge you transfer in your videos. I would like to use cardboards to make de paper clay and make objects in series. Could I have your opinion about it and could you give me any tips on the recipe ( additional adjuvants as clay or minerals, etc)? Thank you
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
I have never used cardboard for the paper mache clay recipe. If you can get the cardboard to fall apart, it should work, though. You might need to use very hot water, and soak it for a long time. The cardboard has glue in it to hold everything together, so I don't know if that would affect the mixture or not.

Would you say there is a meaningful difference between white glue and wood glue? In terms of cost, strength, accessibility?
@UltimatePaperMache2 ай бұрын
I never use white glue in place of paper mache paste, but mostly because I don't like the way it makes the paper slide around while the glue is still wet. I think the cooked flour and water paste is a good substitute for white glue, and is plenty strong enough for most projects. Wood glue is more expensive, but it's quite a lot stronger, and it's water resistant. If a mask is used in a theater production where it will be worn often, and might be tossed around between shows, I think the wood glue is a good idea, although it will cost a bit more.
@thoracis2 ай бұрын
@@UltimatePaperMache That makes sense. Thank you for the reply and explanation! ❤️

I’m having a hard time finding newspaper? Is there something I can buy?
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
Gosh - the local stores within 40 miles of me send me advertising flyers every week, whether I want them or not, so I haven't had to worry about it recently. And I currently use the brown paper that comes inside amazon.com boxes, which is about the same weight as newspaper. But years ago, when I lived in Oregon, I could get the roll ends from our local newspaper. Their printer had to stop when it it got close to the end of the roll, and they were happy to get rid of the paper they couldn't use. (And I got the cardboard rolls, too, which were fun to play with.) I just found some nwspaper for sale on amazon.com, but there's so much in the package that it would keep you busy for years. It might be a place to start, though, if you can't find any locally. The listing I found is here: amzn.to/46dlIGu

I need help! HELP😮 I bought Elmer’s glue especially for the recipe not knowing I could have used wood glue. I used the grams recipe for the papermache clay and it turned out wet and sticky. Is there something I can do to save it? I’ve already added extra flour.
@UltimatePaperMache7 ай бұрын
It sounds like you didn't squeeze out enough of the water, but if you're using the gram recipe, that shouldn't happen. We only use the wood glue for paper mache clay with DAP or Wurth joint compound. It won't work for any other brand of joint compound. What brand of joint compound are you using? If it's not DAP or Wurth, try adding some corn starch to stiffen up your mix. It will always be sticky - it's supposed to be sticky so it will stick to the armature.

What’s the paper you get from Amazon
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
It's the paper that is used to fill up the extra space in their boxes so items don't roll around during shipping. It's very close in weight to newspaper, so if you don't have any of the brown paper, just use newspaper instead.
