Drag Race! Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 vs. BMW M4 Competition | 0-60, Performance & More

When we last saw our Ford Shelby GT500 in a drag race, it got left in the dust behind our Tesla Model Y Performance. Given the Tesla's all-wheel-drive traction and immediate power delivery, that may have been an unfair pairing. This time we've attempted to even out the playing field by bringing a 2021 BMW M4 Competition. In this video, Carlos Lago and Kurt Niebuhr from Edmunds jump into these high-performance vehicles to see which one has the quickest acceleration and 0-60 time. This is a drag race of the Ford Shelby GT500 vs BMW M4 Competition.
The 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 is a muscle car through and through. A supercharged V8 engine routes a whopping 760 horsepower through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the two rear wheels. The Shelby's massive tires, massive brakes and special aerodynamic body pieces all work in harmony to allow for optimal performance on the racetrack.
The redesigned 2021 BMW M4 Competition is a fast and powerful luxury sport coupe. Under the hood, the M4 packs some serious punch. The 2021 M4 Competition produces 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. At our test track, it covered the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 122.7 mph. Noise and vibration are kept to a minimum, even for a performance car. The M4 is quick and nimble on the track, and it'll give any competitor a run for its money.

Yeah for guys that do this professionally they got it all wrong. I actually own a gt500 and the launch control is pretty good even on a none prep surface very little spin in first and no spin in second with your foot to the floor and yeah that’s why it has a drag mode

your absolutely right! i also own a gt500 and im not being bias because of that on the other hand i feel like the gt500 driver was. just the way he was so negative from the start and talking down about the gt500s launch control??? the guy literally said "im going to launch this without launch control"????? like are you serious? i would take any m4 of the rip. first time i see one of these editors being so bias instead of letting the car do what it does best, ford engineers programed this state of the art computer to launch the car faster and better than any human its the reason why they also only made a dct available. they wanted to insure no human error like this BOZO just proved!!!!

Guys that own these and have been to Ford Performance Racing School; we learn how to launch. One of the tricks is to keep your steering wheel top dead center with no left/right input. That lowers the output if you move the wheel, even a little bit. There are other things too with launch control. But, no doubt the BMW is fast. I didn't buy the GT500 to be the fastest car in the universe. For me, it is the whole experience. And man does it handle amazing. Even on 4S tires in heavy rain.

The guy driving the mustang needs to use launch control to build boost it is a supercharged car but it only has too produce half the boost as a turbo charged car to leave correctly the guy in the BMW is using launch control and is leaving on the start at maximum boost and is leaving faster than the mustang.

I find it kind of funny that manual transmissions are considered sporty in the USA. I'm German and manual transmissions are super normal in europe. 70% of all cars are manuals vs. 7% in the US. From a certain power on let's say 300bhp a manual is so much slower in acceleration compared to a modern dsg, dct or even zf hp8. I like driving shift, it's kind of fun, but if you want the best performance frkm your car, automatic nowadays is better. I'm anyway wondering why people abroad with all the strict speedlimits love to buy those germans cars. I guess most of the people do not regualary go on track events...

I have been following road tests since the test of the 1967 Chevelle SS. Motor Trend and Road and Track magazines have been giving unbiased results since the late 50s. They got completely different results than these clowns did with these two cars. I'm gonna put my money on the professionals rather than a couple of hipsters on KZbin. If I were to stack the deck just right, I could give you a test showing the Avanti in a more favorable light than the M4. The BMW is a nice car but that Shelby would eat it for breakfast on the street; especially on the interstate.

I think you may want to rewatch that video. The M8 absolutely freight trains the GT500 from a dig. I love American muscle, but I just wish they'd offer AWD in their high performance cars. Then again, people who decry an AWD Mustang. But the CT5V Blackwing would be insane with AWD. Once you get to the power levels that some of these cars have, RWD is almost useless on the street. I had a 2005 GTO that made 600rwHP and it was a blast, but it was futile trying to get it to hook below third gear on the street. Even on DR's, 1st was pointless.

@@CU08 My AWD 2022 M240i is routinely poo-poo'd by the BMW purists for being AWD. Despite that, it'll still hang the tail out with the best of them if you want, thanks to some fantastic engineering on the power balance. The launch on this little thing is just brutal, though, and is 2/3 of the reason it can beat a lot of way more powerful cars from a stop. I compare it to my 600-ish HP '85 Silverado, where the rear tires just laugh at you when you mash the gas. The big block sounds awesome, but the little turbo BMW does all things fast so much better (and safer) - while also pulling down 35MPG on the interstate. Can't pull a trailer or haul home a new fridge, though, so the truck stays. :D

You gave us a reason why you didn't use launch control on the GT500. That doesn't add up. Your launch was terrible. He had a 2 car lead before you left. By the way. Doing a burnout on street tires doesn't help. Did you guys time your runs? At my local track. I see GT500s using slicks launching hard running low 10s. Just curious what times the GT500 ran. It amazing with out a dig (Roll race). The GT500's power is evident. Thanks.

Look at the E30 to E36 then E46 to E90 those were all massive changes each generation but they didn’t screw them up, some people didn’t prefer the design of those older BMWs but for the most part people at least liked them and never hated on generally. E60 for example was a huge change and was ugly for some, but it still had that BMW DNA and look how it aged. This new M3/4 are designed for marketing and to pull the Chinese Market.

In a drag race, the downforce from the rear wing even on the lowest setting causes more drag than the non carbon fiber track package. It would perform a little better on a road course. I have a 21 gt500 with the CFTP and I could not justify spending 124k for that car! Great question BTW

@@loitersquadX In this case it would be true. Shelby keeps pulling real hard after 100mph. It can put over 4 seconds ftom 0-150mph on a Camaro 1LE with Extreme Track Package.

At a prepped track. Huge diff, they are showing real world street. Hellcats and gt500s high 11s at best on street. Even new c8 vette runs 1100 on street and track with 495 hp. It's all getting power down. Thts why suns are so quick. Awd.

@@aidenp5768 M8 and M5 will win on the streets anyday, German engineering is the best, those cars can put all their power down on streets. But on the drag strip the GT500 made the M8 competition coupe look like a joke. The M8 is AWD it launches faster but the GT500 just pulls back easily, it even did 10.5s.

I just got the plaid tesla, never thought I would, but 920s are 920s.. car mks me laugh out loud. Weird how the GT500 almost seems to mute itself when they leave the line. You can see how for the first few inches it's dead heat then the M4 comes up on power and pulls away while the GT500's power only starts coming in midway almost a though the system cuts power to protect itself or stop it spinning but it over compensates

It’s all about balance and as many videos as I’ve seen it’s obvious that this M cars have great balance. The only way they lose is when the rules start changing - “rolling starts, rear wheel only, no launch control, etc”. Amazing to see someone in a 760 HP celebrating after changing the rules. A 1/4 mile race is always from a stand still and bringing your best configuration. It’s like a kid that keeps changing and next thing you know it’s best out of 19. 🤣😂🤣
