Drag Race: Volkswagen Virtus vs Volkswagen Taigun - Sedan takes on SUV twin | Autocar India

A VW will surely win this race but which one will it be? The Virtus GT with its traditional sedan body style or the Taigun GT with its SUV styling? Both get the same 1.5 TSI engine with 150hp mated to a DSG transmission. Seems like this one will go down to the wire.

Both r made on the same platform only which means both will have same wheelbase and overall same space in the back rows and as Virtus is a sedan it'll possibly have a bigger boot

First of all, Taigun is not a SUV, it's a compact crossover, the definition of an SUV means a car having 4X4/ having good ground clearance/big size. Taigun is a FWD car which is based on the Virtus, no doubt why they weigh almost the same. And Virtus I didn't say is bigger, it's rather longer and both will have same leg room as both got same wheelbase as Virtus is longer it'll have a better boot and the Taigun is a crossover so it will have a slight better head room. That's it.

Effect of aero will be more pronounced in corners so rather than comparing on straight line, it should be compared based on circuit lap times for proper assessment.

Always wanted to find out the difference that makes sedan more aerodynamic. But this race proves that it is only just that much advantage. Any one who prefers a smaller dimension coupled with many other advantages of a CSUV should pick the Taigun. Thank you Autocar for this wonderful drag.

Ahh.. you got it wrong my friend.. More drag means more resistance.. which translates to more fuel consumed... And no SUV can match high speed stability of a sedan in same class.. Sedan are great at cornering and SUVs will have more body role compared to sedan in high speeds.. So conclusion is.. If you drive mostly on highways and good city roads you should close your eyes and buy a sedan.. If you are driving on bad roads and hills most of the time or of you have senior citizens who commute regularly in car then buy a SUV.. If you buy a Fortuner and drive in highways all the time it's like feeding a Tiger with curd rice daily..

Your point is valid in respect of say a Creta and Verna but with respect to the Taigun, which has proved to be dynamically well sorted otherwise that has exhibited surprisingly better handling characteristics than the Virtus (you may refer to the lap time of Virtus and Taigun by autox) a small drag disadvantage may not prove to be deal breaker in highways. The Virtus again is also a compromised sedan as it still is well raised and not a low slung sedan. I am not saying that Virtus is bad but my conclusion is that with specific comparison between Virtus and Taigun, both are dynamically well sorted and eventually the choice will depend upon the dimension and looks rather than ride and handling.

Driver talent's impact is almost negligible, since they are both automatics and all the driver does is apply full throttle. If it was a manual, then it would have played a significant part.

Probably not.. XUV 700 is not a rear wheel drive. So probably Virtus GT will win. XUV petrol stands no chance against Sedans with 4 cylinders. Cruze , Older Verna 1.6, Jetta diesels will smoke most of the SUVs including fortuner. X3, Q4 might win against them.
