Dragon Age Inquisition - Class Build - Two-Hand Templar Warrior Guide!

The Templar in Dragon Age Inquisition make great support warriors that can buff their party and put terror in the hearts of demons. With this build, I've further enhanced their buffing capabilities and added a few control techniques that can make any encounter, a lot more manageable because of the Templar's presence.
This guide focuses on how to build your class using a combination of standard skills from the Two-Hand, and Battlemaster skill trees, and new active and passives from the Templar specialization tree for Warrior. These builds can be used of course for your main character, but have also been designed to be just as viable for use with your AI teammates.
This build has been put together from a fresh respec. With about 15-20 points to place, you can put together a very powerful Templar that has everything it needs to dominate on the battlefield.

From here, focus on unlocking more useful passives like Guard-smasher or more active skills like Spell Purge. Keep in mind you can only have 8 skills equipped at a time.
When playing a two-hand Templar, I found it's best in tougher fights to let you tank go first and pull aggro. Then move in while the enemy is distracted to perform buffing skills like Blessed Blades and control skills like Mighty Blow from behind.
The most amazing thing about Templars are bringing them to go Rift hunting! One cast of Wrath of Heaven, and the battle is nearly over already. Even on Nightmare difficulty, this skills deals tons of damage and stuns demons so long, they barely have a chance to fight, if at all. ;)

You're kind of missing the point about Templar. The strongest ability combo the spec has involves using Wrath of Heaven while surrounded followed by Spell Purge to trigger a spell combo that does massive spirit damage to all the stunned mobs. Also grab Bull Rush with the upgrade to make Wrath of Heaven free (instead of 65 stamina). 2-handed Templar is great.

It's overkill in my experience. I play on Hard-Nightmare and Wrath of Heaven alone destroys demons nearly in one shot. What you're saying is true certainly, but unnecessary in my opinion. Also, Spell Purge is not the only ability that benefits from incapacitated foes. A lot of combos are possible with Wrath of Heaven. Thanks for the feedback.

It's definitely overkill when facing demons, but the beauty of the Wrath of Heaven -> Spell Purge combo is that it works wonders against any type of enemy. Of course, it's all up to opinion and preference, I like there are a lot of viable options for every class! Thanks for the guide, I've used a few of them to great effect and I'll give this one a try (though I'll have to squeeze in spell purge).

KineticGTR If you're talking about combos with other classes, you're right. But as far as combos the warrior can pull of themselves, Spell Purge is the only Eldritch combo available to the class, and deals FAR more damage than detonating stunned mobs with an Impact combo (Mighty Blow, Whirlwind, Lunge and Slash etc.) Yes, Wrath of Heaven deals amazing damage vs. Demons by itself, but using the combo I mentioned can deal insane damage against anything that's not immune to being stunned. I'm currently on my 2nd Nightmare-only playthrough btw. Anyways, you're doing a great job on the production side with the videos, you certainly can't cover every possible way to play a class/build, but I felt like this particular combo was too valuable and reliable to ignore when talking about 2-handed Templars. Thank you for the effort you put into making these videos.

+KineticGTR i don't find this totally overkill unless you got a rift mage in the party cause in many cases the enemies are not all in your range of attack. It's nice to quickly clean the battlefield and make everyone's life easier in your party :D

I quite liked my Two Hander Templar, mainly BECAUSE of its focus on other trees. let me have the fun of Templaring, but allowed me go play around with some heavy investment in other trees, which my Reaver sadly lacked.

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but Templar has an incredible combo it can do by itself. If you run into a pack of guys (any type of guys, not just demons), use Wrath of Heaven to stun them, then IMMEDIATELY use Spell Purge, you self combo with an Eldritch Detonation. Mine does 3~4k damage on average @ lvl20.This alone is why Templar is my favorite warrior subclass. Also, it can tank OR dps pretty effectively.

Kinetic - First off, I want to say thank you so much for these videos. I think i've gone through just about all of them. I've been level 10 on my second playthrough (i restarted to go to nightmare mode) for a couple of days now while i think out my specializations. .I've played as a 2 hander my entire time through this second playthrough. I just wanted to share some insight with you from my gameplay/readings. As a 2 hander, i've found my DPS to be pretty legit and i have some tankability, but at the end of the day I feel the 2 handed class, on nightmare, is more about the CC abilities and support. I think it's time to admit that we were built for that support-type of role. This is why i'm going to choose templar. Having the longest stun in the game, combined with a detonation effect of spell purge...plus combined with the fact you do 30% more damage against downed and incapacitated foes. Even without the damage from WoH it just makes it all too much to pass up. It's incredibly strong at the specialization-selecting levels because it allows you to keep your 2 handed abilities, and essentially add a dispel and stun. Late game, you turn into a buffer for your party with blessed blades and Horn, but 50% + 15% (non demon) damage, and keeping varric around for his + damage as well In addition the passves and upgrades allow you to keep those hard hitting stuns to low CD's. To me, that makes up for any DPS passives that the reaver tree gives you. That being said (This is what i'd like to throw your way Kinetic), from what i've seen late game the 2 handed vs 1 handed sword dps is almost null. 1 handed combined with the end game shield actually out dps's a 2 handed plus is the difference of ~40 armor and having a solid guard generator/block ability in shield wall...for those pesky 2 handed guys, of which there seem to be a million. It seems to be a matter of preference, i will tell you for this reason, when i come back through to play reaver i might just go one handed. On nightmare, it's a chore to manage your health...more so because of those damned ranged mobs that always seem to latch on to me. TL;DR Version for those of you in my position trying to decide 1 handed => 2 handed Templar = Buffer/Support/CC/Survivability +++Party DPS Reaver - Huge single target DPS/Low survivability (on nightmare)/consider SnS I wrote all that to beg you for this... Is there a chance you would mind doing a SnS DPS Templar and Reaver build. Turns out there is really neither on youtube. Happy new year dude, welcome back from the holidays!

But Spell Purge adds to the Templar gameplay style. That Wrath of Heavens and Spell Purge combo doe. Honestly I know you think you may not need it but it has a lot of purpose; Dispel is still cooling down, oh I have Spell Purge. Even if there are other incapacitated combos, still fits the Templar experience. Two Templars(Cass, PC) in my party equals epic combos non stop.

Going fire and necro together with a mage is great. Throw some damage over time effects on your targets, (Like immolate + walking bomb) and staff 'em down for dependable DPS. :D Also great for animal hunting. Walking bomb and forget it. They won't survive long enough to run. My main character is a female mage with this setup.

This has probably been said before, but you can combine the wrath of heaven and spell purge abilities to do a massive damage burst, well into the 2000 range with a one handed weapon, and that works against all enemies

Not having spell purge with this build makes no sense. Pillar of Light + Spell Purge is the reason why make a Templar. Spike with Cassandra for large dmg.

The only time i deviated from your awesome build guides. Totally left out the battlemaster skills, just took the passives right and left (deep reserves in priority -i don't even use grappling chain) Only took mighty blow and block and slash in the 2 hand weapon tree plus a couple of passives. Took everything from the templar tree (wrath of heaven+spell purge=armaggeddon) then charging bull and unbowed who really help standing in the harder fights the DLC brought up. Yes it's absolutely OP vs rift demons (like, 39000 damage once) but other types of enemies still holds it in these DLC and having guard is a life saver. Since i don't like the 2hand tree that much this is the funniest offensive warrior i could have in that game ^^

You get 600% damage with the Spell Purge upgrade, essentially you can proc and combo off of your own skills by popping Wrath of Heaven first as a set up. You already took the upgrade on WoH, that gives you 6 seconds of full stun...why would you even bother with Pommelstrike? So many wasted and redundant skills on this build.

One possible improvement upon the build: Take Spell Purge. It is an eldrich (mage) combo detonator, and wrath of heaven gives you AoE stun (warrior combo setup move) which gives you a powerful cross class combo with only one character. I don't know the exact math, but I think using 2 handed weapon gives you more damage per hit than 1 handed, so your combo become even stronger with 2 handers.

It seems like every character specialization makes them fit a certain role (obviously), but my problem is that there doesn't seem to be any room for my character. I really love all of the characters and switch them out frequently. My issue is that if I pick a specialization, wouldn't I be making one of my characters useless? I don't want to unbalance my party or anything by having two tanks, or two support/dps.

The two handed Templar is how I started, but then switched to sword and shield just because you have more special skills and abilities than you have with two handed. Both really cool, but I personally prefer sword and shield now.

I'm surprised you didn't take spell purge but dispel is overall better so that makes since. The emphasis that you put on stuns is really nice. You should totally do Champion after assassin. Champion is awesome. It's good to be Champion.

The templar is great but it only is at its best against one group of enemies. Granted there are more than enough demons to execute but it seems to just be a waste of points when fighting beasts and non-demons. I'm not criticizing this build by any means, but the templar itself is too lacking to make any better of it. Still, great video as always and look forward to the next

Awesome idea!!! I don't like the way rogues play on this game and so I'm preferring survivability over dps. I love the idea of Cassandra as two handed instead of Iron Bull. I like Iron Bull but I don't like the Reaver speciality and think the Templar has more benefits to the overall team. Gonna play Blackwall (tank), Cassandra (tanky dps), Solas (support mage), Inquisitor (knight enchanter). Most of the specialisations seem to suck, imo

It's still a good idea to have a rogue with you to pick lock doors, which usually contain very good stuff.

CrsEagleEye Yeah, I just generally come back to the locked doors with a rogue in my party. Just see them as a little superfluous as their role is just to cause damage, which any class will do but just takes a little longer without rogues in the team. I find survivability more important and warriors and mages just offer a lot more, imo

Hi, a question. I heard that dispell works on the enemies spawning out of fade rifts (when they are those sort of green blobs) resulting in the enemy not spawning at all in that wave. Would that mean that the AOE from 'Spell Purge' could remove more than one enemy from the fight?

I have a stupid question to ask. How do I use Block and Slash effectively? The problem I find is that my tank constantly takes ALL the aggro so I never have an enemy attacking me to use this ability (If only that happened when I'm a healer in MMOs).

B+S is only usable when being attacked and helps to off-tank during group fights. It can still be used in other situations like when a dragon tries to kick or swipe you during the fight. Using it effectively is just a matter of timing. When you see an attack coming, hit the B+S just before the enemy's attack makes contact with you. If you did it right, you'll Block and Slash ;)

It's overkill in my opinion. You're better off having something something else that will bring harder damage from melee or range.

Permastun. Double spell purge + mage dispel on demon rifts. It's actually not a bad combination for the open world. The single target damage is probably a bit low for bosses, though.

Nope.Only your critical hits :) There is a passive in the Artificer,a Rogue Specialization,that reduces all your cooldowns by half a second if anyone in your party lands a Crit,including you. :D

You can obliterate them before they even spawn with spell purge, it's amazing. Sometimes you'll get lucky and take out the big demons before they even get a chance to snarl at you.

Greatswords/axes have a more rounded damage path (Front/Side), when the maul have direct damage path (Front)

But is S&S/tank viable as a templar? (Noob here), I'm only playing normal difficulty, and went with S&S tank wanting a templar as my main. My team so far is Bull, Sera and Vivienne, which works out fine so far. Should I go for champion if I want a S&S tank though?

Is it viable? Absolutely! A lot of the power that tanks have, even the Mighty Champion spec, comes from the other trees. Admittedly, on nightmare difficulty, a single Templar trying to tank is going to have a hard time I think in a lot of fights. Aside from that, Templars make perfectly fine with sword and shield tanking.

KineticGTR In case you didn't know. As a sword/shield templar, you can still control aggro and dps tremendously well. You just need to remember your team combos. Templar can pull off a solo self "team combo" by using wrath of heaven (for the stun), then following up with spell purge (eldritch detonator) for a tremendous amount of AoE damage.

Sean Sapp I'm aware of all that. What I'm talking about is taking the sheer punishment dished out by enemies that are immune to things like stuns, and they hit like a truck on nightmare. Champions can handle that much better than Templars thanks to Unyeilding, Walking Fortress and Counterstrike.

You can try out both. For 350-ish gold you can buy a respec token from the merchant near the blacksmith in your home base. See which you like better.
