To answer your question, Akira Toriyama (the creator) actually didn't plan out a lot of Dragon Ball Z, while writing the manga he was known for making up a lot of the plot as he went. Even Goku being a Saiyan wasn't originally planned out. Also Dragon Ball Z is actually a rebranded name that was given for the second half of the anime adaptation, in the manga the entire series is just called Dragon Ball.

Also in the Japanese version at the end of episode 150 (Which you left out) The Turtle Hermit says he wrote that stuff while he was drunk. I think everyone, and i mean everyone needs to watch Og dragon ball. This details is something people never mentions about the show, such as goku fighting illusions in this ep. And i love how the show of db already had dbz as a new opening since the manga of dbz was already going. In overall db was amazing, 9/10 show. Good story, characters, antagonists, fights, themes, etc

this episode is loosly based on the Journey to the West story, when Sun Wukong used a magical fan to stop a volcano in the Flaming Mountains. in dragon ball the fan is called the Bansho fan. in the story its called "Banana Leaf" fan because its made of banana leaves.' there are more similarities in this episode. the first season of dragon ball is loosely based on that story.

I remember the first time I watched this series all the way through, I went straight back to rewatch Z, and I kinda recommend you do the same, even if it's on your own time. At least the beginning of it. It's very interesting going back to the beginning of Z coming right off the end of the original. You have such a deeper understanding of things, and Piccolo teaming up with Goku for Raditz is WAY more significant.

The manga came way before the anime, and after the end of Dragon Ball, it simply continued straight into "Dragon Ball Z" although Z is still just "Dragon Ball" in the manga. It's all one continuity. It's only the anime that separated them into 2 different series.

I feel that Toei wasted a huge opportunity with these last few episodes. They could have made a filler episode with only two parts of Goku and Chi Chi's wedding. Something happens to prevent the event, nothing that takes too long to resolve and then it would end with the wedding ceremony. Something beautiful, emotional and memorable, with the presence of all of Goku's friends (Krillin and Bulma could be the groomsmen at the wedding). OG Dragon Ball would end perfectly with 150 episodes.

The last episodes after the tournament are basically filler. And one thing you have to consider is that the manga doesnt know a difference between dragonball and dragonball Z. The manga is just called dragonball and it basically jumped directly to Raditz after this but this doesnt mean Toriyama thought about any of the stuff happening in Z at that point. Toriyama most of the time only thinks a few chapters ahead and writes the story on the go

Well Toriyama wasn't ever "planning Z". Z isn't a thing in the original comic. What you call the start of Z (the Saiyan Saga) is just the 7th saga of Dragon Ball in the original comic. It's just called Dragon Ball all the way up to Buu. The animated team is what renamed it to Z when they got to the 7th saga in the anime version. Toriyama didn't even know what part of the story Z started at when asked in an interview at one point. In terms of "planning", the Saiyan Saga was just developed like he developed any other saga: off the top of his head as he was (probably) getting to the end of the previous saga. Now that you're finished with the series though, and I don't expect you to do this, there is a review of the series I did over on my channel if you wanna see my thoughts on the franchise (though if you watch it be warned, it's got opinions in it that I'm sure various fans would not agree with ^_^; ).

In the manga, there was no DBZ, everything was under 1 single manga from kid Goku meeting bulma to goku’s fight with oob. It’s exactly like Naruto, there is no Naruto shippuden in the manga, everything was under 1 manga called “Naruto”. So DBZ and Naruto shippuden are anime only names to split in half the Dragon ball manga and the Naruto manga. In the manga, after defeating piccolo jr, goku declines Kami’s offer of being the new god of earth and takes chichi and leave and the chapter ends, the next chapter is literally raditz showing up on earth. Pretty much this episode of Goku meeting his grandpa a 2nd time and goku’s weeding did not happen in the manga which is what some DB fans would call “non-canon” So yes, toriyama wasn’t planning to end Dragon ball anytime soon when piccolo jr was defeated due to raditz showing in the manga 1 week later. From interviews, toriyama states that he had 0 intentions of ever continuing dragon ball after the end of the buu saga. At the end of the day, GT and DBS were not toriyama’s ideas since he said he never wanted to continue drawing dragon ball again which explains why the DBS anime was ahead of the DBS manga since toriyama had minimal involvement with the DBS anime and also had minimal involvement with GT as well and he no longer draws the DBS manga either.
