The original concept for dragon ball had no action fighting however toriyama just happened to have a natural talent for drawing cool fight scenes. This lead to his editors pushing the series more towards fighting. You can see the shift clearly in the first budokai arc. Toriyama really is a genius for how to pose and angle fights pretty much the anime just reuses old toriyama poses redrawn with different characters all the time because their artists just are not talented enough to draw this stuff from scratch.

Volkain10 That’s false. Do your research next time. Toriyama created Dragon Ball because of his love for Jackie Chan movies. He had just recently ended Dr. Slump at the time. When coming up with ideas for his next story, his original concept was in fact a fighting actiony manga.

The Saiyan Saga is one of the greatest things Dragon Ball has ever offered the world. I mean, Goku flat out has to sacrifice himself in the first fight. He stomps Nappa, but against Vegeta he is downed before the fight ends. He doesn't get back up and finish the fight, he is broken. He gives Krillin the spirit bomb because he physically couldn't do anything else. The fact that the fights required teamwork and strategy made it a glorious arc. It kept the hero within range of the rest of the cast in terms of capacity. If they had kept this closeness of strength in the Namek Saga, I think it would have been more interesting.
@matiidesign5 жыл бұрын
Usernameping what the tournament of power forgot, I wish goku only went Ui once, and damaged jiren to the point where the rest could keep up, him repeteadly getting up made the whole arc feel fake, I don’t know how to explain it.
@nnightkingj5 жыл бұрын
Soko him going UI once and damaging Jiren would have made it a bigger ass pull than people already think it is it makes more sense for him to get it multiple times to better understand how to use it and they did do that at the end 3 of them it wouldn't make sense for the entirety of universe 7 to make it to the end
@tron96835 жыл бұрын
@@nnightkingj Goku gaining UI no more than twice would've been better, in my opinion. Toei using it more than that almost caused the same problem with SSB, where too much use of it takes away what makes it special. Toyotaro had the right idea by limiting the use of it.
@nnightkingj5 жыл бұрын
Tron96 it makes more sense for him to use it more than once to gain better control and actually learn how to control/master it I disagree since blue is used literally every fight since it's introduction even Krillin UI was only used in dire situations against extremely powerful enemies and in the end he can't tap into it at will at this point

One small thing I would love to contribute to this masterpiece of analysis and explanation is that the fact that we know and see the burden the hero is going through makes the fight much more personal to us. We know that King Kai warned about Goku not passing the double Kaioken but he still goes for the Triple. Not only that, but he goes even further. He KNOWS he may die due to his body not being able to withstand the energy of such powerful move but he also knows as well that if he doesn't succeed, he will die anyway. So, between a "may die" and "will die" he takes his chances, making us more engaged into the story.

Hey, thank you. The funny thing is I knew this without even knowing I knew. I wrote and drew a fight scene with at least a few of these elements if not all. I at least was aware that there is character development involved. I even did it when I used to play with action figures as a kid and my brother would just have two characters/toys encounter one another, one would say "what are you doing here"? Then (punch) the fight starts. It used to upset me when we played together. There was no motivation. As example, I've seen it in one of my all time favorite movie fight scenes, the subway fight at the end of the first Matrix movie. The build up to that fight as well. One last I'll mention is that awesome last fight to Enter the Dragon where Lee and Roper were going up against all of the bad guy's henchmen. Thanks for sharing. This is excellent research for me. I might still be a little confused with the Double Down part. Will do some more study about fight scenes.

2:22 This is completely true. Personally, I'm a huge boxing fan, so when I order a PPV fight, I watch the whole thing. Anyway the cost is so high that I might as well get more bang for my buck...Nothing is more frustrating than paying 70$ for a PPV, only to watch the main event exclusively and for the fight to end in a single round. But I understand that people might not want to slog through 7 fights before the main event if they only want to order a boxing match for a guy's night or something. But yeah, given that I'm a fan, I have context. I may not know all the fighters, but I'll usually know at least a half dozen, if only passingly because I saw them fight once before. 8:30 If I maintain a comparison with boxing, things are quite similar. A championship bout is essentially 26 separate stories, if the fight reaches the 12th round. The fight begins with the fighters being introduced and the announcer doing his best to sell what's to come. You have each individual round, broken up in 3-minute chunks with the entire fight being a story arc. Each round tells its own story, has its own drama. Between each round you have a quick one minute resting period where each fighter's team offers support, both medical and tactical. And finally we have the end, where the announcer returns and declares the winner.

This actually helped me out a lot cause I'm working on a Story where Vegeta found out Beerus ordered the destruction of Planet Vegeta and I didn't know how I wanted the fight to go down cause I'm on the part where Goku tries to step in because Vegeta is getting beat by Beerus but Vegeta wants to win without Goku's help

@@AkraU13 Just some stupid troll. You're doing something with your time that is useful, creative and something that he would never be able to. He's mad, because you're being productive by putting your brain to use unlike himself who does nothing for 12 hours straight. Fuck that guy.

Ok, it seems interesting, but here's the thing... Beerus never ordered Frieza to destroy Vegeta. Friexa was scared of the saiyan's potential.

@@aive751 ik but I made it seem that Beerus feared the Saiyans more than Frieza did so he influenced the destruction of Planet Vegeta

@natalia eventually Vegeta was able to finally match Beerus and Beerus was ready to die at the hands of Vegeta but in a character development style Vegeta didn't kill him as an act of mercy he let him leave

I LOVE your videos like this. It's like a whole new, deeper perspective than I could have ever had as a kid (about 10 years old as well when I saw the Goku/Vegeta battle)

Funny how you can apply all those rules to fight vs Thanos in both Infinity War and Endgame. Nice video, looking forward to see those thropes in movies I'll watch in future.

Unpopular Opinion: SSJ2 Goku vs SSJ2 Majin Vegeta Fight is slightly better than the Goku vs Vegeta fight in the Saiyan Saga
@GruelingFive86 жыл бұрын
I think I really do agree with you there. I loved both but Super saiyan 2 Goku vs Majin Vegeta was better in my opinion

The ssj2 goku and majin vegeta fight was better because at that point in the series we were well acquainted with both characters and their motivation. Like deku vs bakugo 2 is better than the 1st fight. Ps I prefer ssj2 goku vs majin vegeta more too.

Fantastic video. When people ask what is my favorite arc in dbz, like most people, i say frieza saga or cell saga. But when someone asks what my favorite fight in dbz is, I always say goku vs vegeta in the saiyan saga. and thats not even including gohan and krillin entering the fight.

loved the comparison to pro wrestling. So spot-on, especially the properties of a successfully-paced story.

I wonder if Mark still has this opinion about this fight. You know, now that he has watched so many more anime like JoJo’s, One Piece and HxH. Personality I still think Goku vs Vegeta is the peak of anime fight and the base for all that come after it , but he changes opinions a lot so one must wonder
@Kami.Asura0003 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, even after hia recent HxH videos covering Yorknew he still has the same opinion of Dragon Ball

Thank you for showing how much work and thought Toriyama put into this story. Too many people see Toriyama as a lazy, half-assed storyteller.
