The changes in the translations are hit or miss for me. For instance, "I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY MY WOOOOOORRRRLLLLD," is far better than, "Stop enjoying destroying things." However, Vegeta's, "I'm not like you. I cast nothing aside!" would've been great to hear in the dub.

I don't care what anyone says, you don't get chills when Goku says "STOP ENJOYING DESTROYING THINGS" but you get chills when he says "I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY MY WORLD"

I feel like both have their strengths, but obviously Sean Schemmel and his legendary screams are gonna take the cake when it comes to Goku. Though, you have to give some massive respect to Masako Nozawa. She's at the age where others would be at deaths door, and yet she's still screaming her heart out as Son Goku. Both are superb, although the Japanese voice is definitely an acquired taste. But yeah, a rare anime where both dub and sub could be considered "correct".

The last one: Vegeta starts off INSANE, but the Japanese voice actor doesn’t do well for the closing of the speech. It’s like the intensity falls, while it picks up in the English dub.

Huh... never heard the Trunks Japanese voice actor before. Yeah, he's pretty damn good. He doesn't sound like a little girl whose voice is starting to break at all which is nice. Although he does sound older than the age Trunk's is supposed to be at this time. The voice actor in the dub for Vegeta is iconic for me. I would say his is my favorite voice with Piccolo slightly behind. I just can't be happy with any replacement for it even if the Japanese voice actor is good. It just sounds too similar to other voices in the series to my ears. While I can't think of anyone else that sounds like the Vegeta English actor voice (unless it is the same guy in a different anime series). Why do most of the Japanese screaming sound like they have phlegm rattling in the back of their throat though? It doesn't sound like it is coming from their diaphragm or that it would vibrate in their chest... is it just a "throat scream"? I don't know. "Japanese screaming" more often than not just doesn't sound right to me at all. Far too much "kid in the supermarket having a tantrum" and far too little "fully grown man with testicles that have actually dropped about to rip your head off". It's like a year old cub trying to be fierce vs a fully grown veteran of many seasons lion. They honestly just don't compare. I noticed the exact same thing in the Japanese voice work in episodes of "My Hero Academia" as well (to a lesser degree... as they scream less often in that show). It pulls me out consistently in the precise moments they are meant to be pulling you in, And in Dragon Ball Z... there is a LOT of screaming over the course of the series. So for me a lot of those moments are going be a kind of whimpy rather than the feeling of... "shit is about to get real" that I've gotten used to.

I've gotta go with the sub version as controversial as a take that may be I have 3 main reasons 1:I spent most of my childhood watching subtitled media from Japan becouse of how I got this idea into my head that dubs where bad becouse of things such as kaiju or tokasatu media (I did watch the ocean and funni dubs when they were on but I almost always chose the subs over it so I guess I have added nostalgia) 2:whilst I do like the dubs for kai and super the english dubs avalible for the original dragonball and z are not very good in my opinion,they're filled with bad acting,line delivery,out of place music,weird mistranslations and pronunciations they're just not good dubs 3:I've never liked Sean as goku don't get me wrong he's a good va but he's horribly miscast as goku and I feel like he fails to capture gokus personality + in the original funni dub his proformence is so wooden and clunky That's just my take tho obviously in not going to shit on you for disagreeing this is just my take 🙂

I can suspend my disbelief enough for Goku to not sound stereotypically masculine in the original version. it is a fantasy world with dinosaurs, aliens, spaceships, and androids. Imho, you end up sacrificing story, emotional dynamics, and aesthetic subtleties with the dub.

Idk why but I like dragon ball super subbed better then dubbed, but I like dragon ball z dubbed rather then subbed. I think for me it's the way the voice sounds in comparison to the music and everything else that goes on in that seen, in subbed it blends in better compared to dubbed (for super). But for dragon ball z I'll take dubbed any day of the week. Now the battle of God's movie and the resurrection f movie I'll take dubbed because it sounds better
