I mean, the cell saga doesn't follow this formula, and the buu saga is so convoluted that they dont follow this formula exactly (it was a bad move though, buu saga has so many twists that it gets boring after a while)

And after you've forced him to come up with four extra concepts for his villains in the previous arc. Seriously, it was just supposed to be about the first set of Androids. But then his editors made him come up with another set of Androids, then Cell, Then they made Toriyama have him transform twice. Do you see why he went off the handle a little by the time he got to the Buu saga. He just wanted to write whatever the hell he wanted to write without his editors telling him what to do.

Fariko Wishless didnt win in the cell saga and for the most part wasn’t even there, and the Buu saga is much more then your bad summary and it was a joint effort among Goku, Vegeta, and the planet of Earth. Even in the Saiyan Saga the character who gets the win is Gohan. The only person Goku beat in that saga was Nappa. Try again

Goku dies in the first fight of Z, beats up Nappa but doesn’t kill, doesn’t even win against Vegeta, only beats up Recoome and Burter on Namek until he beats Frieza (but doesn’t kill him) and the killing honor goes to Trunks. He’s barely there in the Cell saga, unable to beat Android 19 because of a disease, then him withdrawing from the fight against Cell and there is a joint effort in killing Buu. Goku finally gets the last touch in killing Buu, but that’s his only one against the major villains.

The Cell Saga doesnt follow this formula though, everyone expected it to, but it didn't, and that's why it's probably where the story should have ended. The buu saga tried to break the formula too but was waaaay too convoluted by the end of it. The only sagas that follow those formulas are the saiyan and freeza saga to be honest.

@@xcraetor9276 Dragon Ball Super was just ok. It had incredible potential in every arc. Universe 6 Saiyans, Goku Black, Tournament of Power. So much potential. But they couldn't pull it off. I honestly believe most of us fans could have quite easily done a better job at making a better story. What's even worse is, the story they made is in itself riddled with so much inconsistency and needless things. I can honestly overlook the infamous animation. Animation can be fixed later nowadays. But the story doesn't have that luxury.

I loved Goku's journey and his fights with Prince Pilaf, Tenshinhan, Jackie Chun and the RR Army. And I liked how the powerlevels were somewhat low enough that collecting the dragonballs rendered somewhat difficult. Nowadays the Z Fighters have an absolute monopoly on them without any trouble.

There is so much they could do with the DBZ universe that doesn't involve the MCs, but they don't want to take the risk. An entire game about being a Frieza Force grunt and climbing the ranks would be cool as hell. Any storyline as a Saiyan during Frieza's rule or even before that would be dope. A story where you play a Namekian, maybe one about Kami's past and how he came to be on Earth. There's also so many cool things they could do with the Kais or the afterlife world with Paikan and stuff. Other genres would be cool even if they use the same MCs. A card game like Hearthstone or something with cool animations would do pretty well, imo. The new wave of Auto-Chess games like Team Fight Tactics or Dota Underlords with DBZ characters would be pretty hype. Hell, while we are sticking to game genre fads, let's do a Battle Royale game too. Everyone plays as low rank Saiyans, Namekians etc. and you are dropped into a map where you have to survive and kill the other players. Anything but the same rehashed game over and over. Kakarot is just a single player Xenoverse that we have already had twice, which are just remade Budokai games....

@@TheFimpish Vegeta let dr. Gero activate the droids 17 and 18 cause he was feeling like a god after turning into ssuper sayan for the first time. Result: he ended up half dead. Not long after that, he got stronger, even stronger than Cell after absorbing 17 and had the briliant idea of cooperating with Cell to make him become perfect just cause he was curious to see how strong he was gonna be. Again, he got beaten to a pulp. But Vegeta doesn't learn his lesson so in the Buu arc, he doesn't want to prevent Buu to being reborn. He, once more, is inebriated with his power and is curious to see if Buu is thaaat powerful. Outcome: dead. By far, the worst enemy for Vegeta is his own ego.

There IS drama to Dragon Ball. This is a serious misconception that Dragon Ball is mindless action with a repetitive scheme: it's not. I actually defy anyone to read the manga from start to finish while predicting all along what's going to happen next chapter. In Dragon Ball there's tension, hope, despair, sacrifices, character development, turns of events... The bad pacing of the anime adaptation, its ridicule fillers and inferior staging may mislead people into thinking that Dragon Ball is a "parody of anime", but anime is actually a parody of Dragon Ball.

Seeing OG Tom from Toonami gave me flashbacks of DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, and the one I always forget the name of that was basically some dude's harem with girls from outer space that kick-started puberty for me. Oh, and REBOOT. The best CGI story about the inner-workings of the tiny green people that live inside of our PCs. (INCOMING GAME, INCOMING GAME) But yeah, the game is nostalgic but ultimately just another Bandai Namco game with more missions than usual and longer cut-scenes. The story loop is much more true for the game but in the anime even though enemies scaled with main characters but the tension was real and the story did flow. When piccolo was stronger than cell and equal to 17 it made sense. When vegeta surrendered to majin powers it made sense. When kid buu was weaker than super buu it made perfect sense. Even though no one dies the power level ping pong was amazing in DBZ. Super is mainly carried by nostalgia and vegeta being a good hypeman

3:33 - it kinda has a parody in it. I mean, look at the saiyajins - sai-ya when swapped gets yasai (vegetable in japanese) and jin stands for man. So the saiyajins (or saiyans as Americans say) are basicly vegetablemen. That's why they're also called so, Kakarot (carrot), Broly (broccoli), Vegeta (either the seasoning or some ultimate vegetable, he's a prince after all), Vegeta's children are named after underwear (trunks, bra) and other stuff like the ultimate evil guys who are also cooling machines (Freezer, Cooler). A whole lot of stuff here was made for shits and giggles, but also in a way that would still be entertaining and Toryiama pulled it off just right. Also, the real reason why saiyajins have yellow hair (it could be any bright colour actually) is because it was easier to draw in manga, you could just draw hair outlines, and you're done, and yeah, they had a loooot of hair to draw. Stuff I say here may be obvious and well-known for a lot of people, but I guess some of you don't, so I thought it's worth mentioning. What always gets me is how fiercly people argue over stuff like powerlevels, or what the character motives were. Take it with a pinch of salt guys, I bet the creators didn't even think about it in that weird, overanalyzing way :D

Maybe it's just me, but I think people don't realize that there is more to Dragon Ball and that there many differences in how the story plays out throughout each arc. Vegeta was beaten by a monkey child falling on his face, Raditz was killed by Piccolo through Goku's sacrifice, and Goku wasn't even alive to kill Cell. I'm not even trying to defend my "sacred childhood memories", just stating facts. While yes it is true that "there's always a big bad man", their circumstances, goals, motives, and personality are all (for the most part) different. There is drama to the show but the game fails to portray that drama through it's lackluster gameplay and storytelling, but I don't think that's a good reason to say Akira Toriyama and his work Dragon Ball can't do drama.

Ok, I agree with your opinion on the game itself. It's repetitive and boring. And I'm speaking as a huge fan of Dragonball. From the original Anime to Super. However, I believe you judging the series based purely on this game is just plain misguided and wrong. You can't judge a 325 chapter story, based on the compressed version in a video game. Yes, Dragonball is remembered for it's bombastic action scenes and colourful transformations. But those are not what makes the series good or great. It's the build up and story that makes these moments impactful. For this example, I'm going to use the moment your boyfriend has a great fondness for. That moment being Goku's Super Saiyan Transformation. I'm going to talk about the actual build up to his transformation to give you context, using Plague of Gripes excellent rundow of the journey Goku takes to get to that point.. "Goku at his strongest, wasn't even half as good as Freeza. The entire series until this point. Had been about Goku's free spirit and his desire to protect his friends. His journey had gone from converting his enemies, to discovering one's that were beyond redemption. Freeza embodied everything that could break Goku. His pride as a fighter, the lives of his friends and even Goku's core innocence. When Goku is exhausted, near death and starts seeing his friends cut down one at a time, after trying every solution the setting had established as a possibility. He snaps. The animes padding may have harmed this, but the moment he transformed, matched the pacing of the story." That is what made Goku's transformation impactful, not the transformation itself, But the tension and drama building up to it.

Pretty sure there are only two arcs that follow the “repetitive story” you are talking about. Raditz, androids, cell, Majin buu, and about a dozen movies do not follow the same structure. Game doesn’t look good though and I appreciate you’re being honest there because everybody else is sugarcoating it. All they have to do is put the cha la song in and nobody cares if it’s a good game. It’s a “love letter to the fans” and they are absolved of having to make something worth playing.
