Fun part is that it also gives you rules for extra player races, like goblin, orcs and ogres

I love how they write this like a real person encountering these beasts / monsters, even encounter examples. Adds so much value to the book other than just statblock. Good stuff!

If you like this style then track down a copy of "In Search of Lost Dragons". Not a Bestiary but a stunning work of art and prose.

I concur that Free League publishes top-notch stuff quality-wise. I love the art style of Dragonbane so much. Funny story, when I pre-ordered the DB Bestiary as soon as it appeared on their store website, they initially sent me the link to the Swedish version (“Monster Bokken”). They sorted it out super fast by sending me the link the English version, of course, but the original made for a very entertaining “read”. As a speaker of both English and German, I could even make out some of it. Skål!

Dragonbane was a monumental shift in my thinking about ttrpgs, something that hasn't happened since I picked up Hero System 5e back in the mid 2000's. I love RuneQuest, but its action resolution system drives me crazy. Dragonbane manages to marry RQ-style with the simplicity of the OSR... amazing

Man this bestiary looks so cool I'm tempted to buy it just as inspiration even though I don't have Dragonbane

Great review. Comprehensive without being too long. I love the art style they use and am glad to see they kept it for this newest book. Also love to hear that there are adventure hooks included. Will definitely add this to my list to pick up.

Have the Dragonbane core set - so worth it, and so gorgeous! If only I could find this and the other accessories (cardboard minis, etc) in stock rather than in delayed pre-order status from my favorite shops. Thanks for the look-through!

The world of Dragonbane is the same kind of mythological hodgepodge as D&D. It picks liberally from Tolkien and Germanic, Greek, Egyptian and Middle-Eastern mythology, but with a bigger focus on Norse mythology for obvious reasons. It rarely makes up any original creatures though. The Karkion, which first appeared in the 1985 bestiary, is one of the few exceptions. An effort was made early on to find suitable Swedish names for some of the classic fantasy races/kin. The goblin, hobgoblin and ogre are named svartalf, vätte and rese in the Swedish version, from Old Norse svartálfr, vættr and risi. Svartálfr simply means "black elf" and is thought to have referred to the same creature as dvergr "dwarf". Vættr is cognate with English "wight" and is used for all kinds of supernatural creatures. Risi is one of many names for jǫtunn, powerful beings similar to and often rivals of the Norse gods. Jǫtunn is sometimes translated as "giant". Another name is troll. Other Swedish fantasy RPGs, like Symbaroum and Forbidden Lands, take a lot of inspiration from Dragonbane and follow the same conventions.

If you ever do a Dragonbane episode again, have you thought about rolling up an adventure using the tables in the back of the rulebook? I’ve had some good solo play experiences with them. Can definitely spice them up with enemies from the Bestiary 👍🏻

Free League are currently the best RPG company by a long shot. In fact, compare them to any RPG publisher since we started playing them and they'd take some beating. Their stuff is top notch.

Looking at all the Free League stuff on my shelves, I’d have to agree. Alien, the One Ring, Twilight 2000, Dragonbane, Forbidden Lands…all excellent.

Going to be buying Dragonbane starter set with next payday. Then will get this book for sure. Will be running this solo, after I finished my Intial play of Dune solo (dune will be ongoing for awhile but playing Dragon bane along side it). Really enjoying learning new systems. Once done some play throughs of dragonbane want to do worlds without numbers, forbidden lands. So many games to play feel I have so much catching up to do lol.

I have very few physical games. Mork Borg, Pirate Borg, the ironsworn pdf printed out(if that counts) but seeing stuff like this, the detail, the massive amount of content, and the imagery, makes me really want to start a collection in the vein of the Sage's Library. Definitely getting The Broken Empires as soon as the kickstarter drops. Side note: We're you able the see any of the Eclipse?? We were completely covered in clouds on this side of town.
